Downtown 300 / help with downtown 300 issue
« on: September 26, 2012, 12:41:14 AM »
i have a 2012 dt just over a year.....have had no major problem since i bought it...all maintenance done on schedule.....heres what is happening.....the speedometer reads like 50 when you are only doing say half of that....on idle the speedo shows about 20 mph....and correspondingly....the tach is way off as well when on start/idle it revs at 3900rpm...

if you just turn the key on (without starting) the pointer on the speedo is at 20 and the pointer on the tach is also at about 20.....so when riding the pointers are at higher levels than they should be so i am working at higher levels on speedo and tach....

believe electrical....i do charge with trickel charge as needed.....have noted the scooter will stall out at times if not warmed up....other than that power still there but not  reading the way it should......anyone have any ideas/suggestions as to what might be going on?

Downtown 300 / oil change issue
« on: July 11, 2012, 01:28:28 AM »
odo...hit 5000 so time for my  second oil change on my 2012 dt 300....heres what happened.....i changed to mobile synthetic for motorcycles/scooters.....it takes 1.5 liters for the change......roughly 50 ounces...,anyway.....rode for about 2  days  locally with no problem...plenty of pressure....but today went on a 10 mile chore.....which included some highway.....on the way home noticed a red light on the right dash indicator.....directly opposite the oil can light.....by the time i got home the red light read......"oil service".... once home .put the scooter on the center stand and checked the oil.....seemed to be ok.....checked the owners manual under oil maintenance and i believe it tells you to check the oil level without screwing the filler cap all the way in...i wound up putting another 4-5 ounces of synthetic oil in....ran it a few minutes waited a few minutes ....and checked the oil level again.....it is right up to the end of the top on the hatched portion of the  stick......

i am not loosing any oil......checked filter area as well ...as i put a new hiflo filter in.....so no oil is leaking ...pressure and power fine but the light won't go off.....as you probably know when you start the scooter the oil can light goes on for a few seconds than turns off.....this is  what its suppose to do and my scooter is doing it.....so ok there......i just can't figure out why this oil service light does not shut off.....and i am reluctant to add more oil...as i donl't want to overfill.......any suggestions on what to do about this light....

i had  absolutely no issues when i did my first break in oil change......

Downtown 300 / first issue with my downtown 300.....suggestions welcome
« on: February 07, 2012, 11:32:41 PM »
:( :(after riding this scooter now since the end of august of last year.....got my first real issue/problem......which was totally caused by me.....what did i do?.....was in a hurry to get to my truck today and hopped off the scooter without turning the key off....net result pretty much of a dead battery......cranked over a bit when i returned but not enough to get it running......

so.....had to get to the battery......which as i found out required taking the bucket and seat off.....not that difficult but like i said my fault live and learn....as i had the battery exposed (FORTUNATELY....just remove cover screws and positive/negative terminals are right there......so i took the opportunity ....to put a pair of pig tails on the p and n terminals reconnected and have it on the battery tender ...waiting for the light to turn green.....when i got to the battery it kind of confirmed what i knew....its a 10 amp.....and i think you really need a 12 amp(and one that fits the case).....nevertheless....i am hoping it will crank enough to start....if it does not my next move would be to put it on a charger...i have one that you can set to 2 amps....and just let it charge till reads full....this might do a better job at getting the battery back to a point where it will at least kick over...

one other thing.....in getting the seat out i disconnected the courtesy light...no problem with this....but i also had to disconnect a break plug...all the way back in the back..near the battery....i am going to try to start it up once charged and was wondering if this break light has to be connected for it to start.....i don't think so and don't want to put the tray back in and tighten......if it still does not start.....any other suggestions welcomed.....

Downtown 300 / second oil change
« on: January 10, 2012, 07:54:47 PM »
i am looking at the maintenance schedule....for oil change on my dt 300i.....the first one was done at 1000km.....it looks as though the next one is not due until 5000 km(or roughly 3,106 miles).....is there anything wrong with doing sooner/more frequently.....and what is the general consensus?...follow the maintenance schedule as if it were the holy grail.....or the more frequent...the better?

Downtown 300 / battery tender hook-up for dt 300
« on: January 03, 2012, 05:18:07 AM »
as the real winter seems to be knocking on the door....at least in my area.....its time to think about getting a battery tender for my dt 300...as i try to ride year round as much as possible....but within the limits of snow and ice of course.

i have a tender for my other scooter which was pretty easy to hook up as the battery is right behind and above the muffler...so once hooked up.... the pig tail .....is easy to get to for connection to the charger....

as the battery for the dt300....sits under the seat tray....it is not easy to get to......but i still like the idea of using a tender...therefore ...i would like any suggestions out there from dt owners....as to the best way to set up to expose the tender pigtail.....without having to drill a hole in the tray...or anywhere else for that matter.....has anyone done yet?....suggestions appreciated.....

Downtown 300 / oil change for new dt 300i
« on: September 10, 2011, 04:24:28 PM »
just want to make sure i am reading and understanding the maintenance chart (page 29-owners manual correctly).I am at about 450 km on the scooter at this point....it says to change which ever comes first (km or miles)....

for km at 1000
for mileage 1000x .6 or 600 miles if i an reading the chart correctly

I am trying to get a filter for the scooter and finding it hard ...the dealer does not even have
I have heard of merits of using synthetic oil....and wondering if there are any down sides to this

Finally,i figured on changing the plug to an iridium type plug when i change the oil and filter....anyone have a particular plug /manufacturer and number i can request that of course can be used in the 300?

appreciate your feedback...thanks robo/bob

General Discussion / what's your experience re rpm
« on: September 01, 2011, 02:12:01 AM »
i am placing this under general although i suppose i just as well could have placed under technical////but here goes

i have a kynco 300 2 weeks old......i had a problem with the seat closing but that has been resolved. I had a nail in rear tire...slow leak...identified , removed , plugged and resolved......maybe i am getting paranoid worrying to much about what else can go wrong...

the scooter has less than 200 miles on it,,,,and i am noticing that the rpms...are way out ahead of odo.mph......as i am a first time kymco scooter owner i am wondering if the speedo should be reading 20-22 mph while the rpm are showing 4000-4500 rpm.

i should  note that the idle is set a bit to high (way i got it).....will (once driven move down) to its spec at 1600 rpm ...otherwise around 18 or 1900 rpm....

most of my recent riding has been very local ...to deli or to five and dime.....the few times i jumped on a larger major road but not freeway and opened up the throttle a bit...the difference between mileage /odo and rpms does narrow....i am trying not to go over 50 as i am still in break in mode....so i am afraid to go high end on the throttle.

so what i am noticing is mostly at lower speeds and as i said roughly in 35 mph zones....so is it me or what is your experience ?.....before i contact the dealer......robo thanks

Downtown 300 / loosing air rear tire
« on: August 26, 2011, 02:14:20 AM »
my scooter is about one week old....and i am noticing i am loosing air in the rear tire the downtown calls for 32 psi...i tend to over inflate just a tad...front tire ok....put on center stand and can't find any nails or such.....put more air in tonight and waiting to see if it holds by tomorrow...

yes i know i can go back to the dealer...as brand spanking new ,,,but prefer not to ride the scooter out there its an hour or more ride.....wondering if it could be the rim...but doubt it the tire is virtually brand new.....any suggestions?

Downtown 300 / how things should work-incomplete pdi
« on: August 21, 2011, 05:00:09 AM »
i am reaching out to those of you who are owners and riders of the 300 downtown,,,,the good news is i received my dt today after picking up at dealer....the bike was suppose to be prepped but took it home and here is some of what i found:

the scooter will not start with the kick stand down....ok i get this as a safety feature  and have seen on some of my other scooters...but on those  it will start/idle but you can't" move it" unless you pull up the kick stand.........what i have here is  a scooter that won't start with the key on if the kick stand is down.....shouldn't you be able to start the scooter with you off of  it and the kick stand down?.....when i pull into the driveway and put the kick stand down all power shuts off////i thought only the kill switch does that ....need to try these procedures on the center stand as well...

i also noticed the efi related "celp indicator light"does not flash on momentarily and shut off as it should.... the battery indicator light flashes on and off as does the oil indicator light but no flashing celp indicator light....whats up with that...possibly related to starting with kick stand down?....

i also note that the scooter should idle at 1600 rpms....mine idles at 2000 rpms...a simple adjustment but not at spec

i also for the life of me can't get the seat to open no matter how many times i try with the ignition key....i follow the owners manual and pull on back of seat but it ??? won't open..i hear a click but nothing happens ..and i am not going to force it.....it must be locked though as the seat unlock indicator light" met-in"...is not lit.

so what am i missing here ..is it me?...looks like i have to get back to the dealer,,,,,

i just bought the new dt 300i////while the dealer did not try to push the after warranty protection plan on me ....i decided not to get it at this point.....as it can be bought later from kymco....if you want it.

i would be interested in the merits of getting extended coverage ....anyone out there buy it?.....did you use it?.....what did it cover?

i have been told by another kymco dealer that its not worth getting (hard to believe he would say that but he did)as it only covers for manufacturing defaults and not maintenance or part removal and replacement..... he noted that if there were something seriously wrong with the engine it would show up well within the two year warranty....

what do you think....what would you suggest......thanks again....robo
