Downtown 300 / Re: What did you do to your DownTown today?
« on: January 22, 2017, 08:13:44 PM »
A big OOOPPPPS!

Backing one scooter out of the garage, tipped the Downtown into the CTX700 !    UGH,  !#!!#$,  %&(* !!  lol

Luckily, only broke the right side mirror on the Downtown.

Have to order (eBay), I have the mirrors that mount to the windshield mounts.   Msged the vendor
, waiting reply (Taiwan) to see if I can just purchase one mirror.

Downtown 300 / Re: Loss of power
« on: September 22, 2016, 01:11:31 PM »
I had a high rpm loss of power, once it seemed like a rev limiter kicked in.

It was the spark plug, anode completely worn down.

Replaced with an iridium plug.

Downtown 300 / Re: long trip and a surprise
« on: September 21, 2016, 12:40:28 PM »
Used the Downtown, bigger gas tank, seemed like 2.5 to fill up around 180 miles were the usual numbers.  I carried a spare 1 gallon can under the seat, used it once for a buddy who ran out.  His BMW was getting terrible milage.

The GT presents a real challenge for out of town usage since the gas tank is smaller and the filler is under the seat.   First you have to lift the seat which means taking my clothes duffel off, also, will have to strengthen the seat hinge area.  Ruminating about connecting   an auxiliary gas tank to the real gas tank above the seat.  The underseat storage area is small, dont know if I could fit my tools/parts there.

Downtown 300 / Strange noise, yea Halloween is near
« on: September 20, 2016, 04:11:11 PM »
After riding with the scooter parked I hear a low tone coming from under the middle of the seat pan.
It lasts for about 5 seconds and then re-occurs about 4 minutes later.
This continues for a while.

Leaning toward some sort of pressure buildup, but the sound is not near the gas cap.

Downtown 300 / long trip and a surprise
« on: September 20, 2016, 04:05:20 PM »
Just finished 2,500 miles in seven days.   No problems with the scooter.
The group I was riding with the smallest m/c was 1000cc.
The pleasant surprise, I averaged 70 MPG when driving at 70-75 MPH on the
interstates.

People GT 300i / Check Spare Fuses
« on: August 17, 2016, 01:30:06 AM »
The fuse box is located next to the battery in the floorboard.

I blew the 14amp lighting circuit, pulled the spare one and still did not work.

Checked the spare fuse (with an ohm meter) , it was bad.   All in all 3 out 4 spare
fuses were bad altho they 'looked' good.

FYI

People GT 300i / Re: PUIG TS and TG windshields
« on: August 11, 2016, 01:17:54 AM »
Just as an add-on.  The width of the TS screen is about 1" short on both sides of the black plastic trim on the handlebars.  The TG is wider and would be at or slightly beyond the same black plastic.  Note, these are tall windscreens, I did a lot of cutting (at least 4" ) in height.  I am 5'7" with a 29" inseam.  You can slide up/down the windshield on its post about 1& 1/2" safely.

Place a lock washer on both the windshield and mirror mounts.  There are four pivoting piecies/angles on this setup and you just can't tighten these well without the lock washers.  My mirrors (used the Downtown lighted ones as DRLs) have two pivot points, the windshield mount is another and the actual windshield is another.

People GT 300i / Re: Engine overheating
« on: August 09, 2016, 02:33:35 PM »
I run my Downtown fast on the Interstates and highways, usually 5+mph over the limit.  Riding in a group I push it WOT to keep up with motorcycles.  Only time the fan has come on is in city riding at 90+F after I have stopped the engine.

I have heard of amateur/pro racers using an 'ice' coolant product that does reduce overheating.

I assume the OP uses distilled water and synthetic oil.  If the 'ice' doesn't fix it, I would cut some plastic to get the hot air 'out' from under the scooter.  My old burgman 400 melted the end cap on the muffler.

Sound like 'too hot', 'too fast'

People GT 300i / PUIG TS and TG windshields

This has been EDITED and corrected.

Ordered via EBAY a TG model #5593W they shipped me a TS model #6848W.
OK, the only difference between the two is the TG is larger.
The mounting hardware is the same.

The screen and hardware appear to be of good quality.

Problem with the mounting bracket, the holes for the re-located mirror mounts are greater than 10mm unthreaded.  The GTI mirrors bolt ends are 10mm x 1.25.   They did not ship part #16 M10 x 1.25 nut.

I went to the hardware store and got 10mm x 1.25 nuts and lock washers.  I will use some plastic tubing to fill the too large mounting bracket hole.   IMO, you could probably wind dental floss around the mirror bolt end to fill and tighten the mounting.

PSI is a ratio, bigger or smaller the PSI is the same.

Have never done a Mallossi.

Have to wait for the Maxxis to wear out, the front felt squirmy on the Downtown.

The tire label and owners manual differ on air pressure, I side with the tire company.   On my motorcycles I usually go 2-3 pounds higher than recommended but on scooters I stay with the standard front tire PSI.  I keep the front at 28, subjectively it feels like it 'bites' better in twisty corners.  A rider shifts the center of mass higher and toward the rear  and adding a passenger makes the front end even lighter.

People GT 300i / Re: Larger Front Tire
« on: July 20, 2016, 01:28:51 AM »
If I did the math correctly, the bigger front tire (130 vs 110) should yield a speedometer reading of 10%+  .  Contact patch about 18% larger.

The Downtown speedometer is very accurate, how accurate is the GT  ?

EDIT   correction
Speedometer reading is +5% at 70mph actually doing 73.5mph.  Tire width about +18.6%.
Used this website  https://tiresize.com/comparison/
EDIT   addition
On contact patch, if you read it make sure its the entire article

Downtown 300 / Re: Downtown for taller riders?
« on: June 22, 2016, 11:30:51 PM »
Highways, I cruise at 70mph, strange on level ground that equals 7,000 rpm.

I am 5'7" inseam of 29", butt stops are superfluous (imo).   Felt like I am jammed forward on the bike, therefore I cut the butt stop off and leveled it out.  My usual riding position is with my heels on the bottom board and toes on the top (slanted) portion.  I alternate by placing them on top or level or on the passenger board.

Downtown 300 / Re: Brakes.
« on: June 22, 2016, 11:22:24 PM »
I am at 17K miles and the front pads are at 50% rear is 60%.   I don't drive much in stop and go.  Do you use your rear brakes as part of braking procedure ?

Downtown 300 / Re: Turn Signal MOD not working for Left mirror
« on: June 22, 2016, 11:19:55 PM »
The empty fairing sockets (elsewhere turn signals) have the wires running down to the nose of the fairing.  The power is connected but the factory cut and taped the ground wires.   IMO, if you want the mirrors as DRLs, I would have tapped the power outlet, you have to be careful routing the wires to the moving handlebars.

I changed the empty sockets to LED turn signals and left the mirror turn signal wires as they were (still work if I plug in the stock mirror/lights.
