General Discussion / Re: tight, locked up brakes
« on: June 04, 2017, 06:24:20 PM »
My manual is the black and white print edition published by Cyclepedia. It is titled "Grand Vista 250 and Grand Dink 250" but I suspect the Grand Vista was included because the two bikes are similar...but not exactly alike, which is why I have had problems with deciphering the diagrams: some are not of the GV in small but important details.

Wow! I just now read the preface, and I quote: "This Service Manual describes the... KYMCO Grand Dink 250." No mention of the Grand Vista anywhere in the text.  In fact, the only mention of the GV is on the cover page. I've been had!

General Discussion / tight, locked up brakes
« on: June 03, 2017, 05:39:13 PM »
I want to share my solution to my locked disc brake on my GV 250.

The little spring that pushes on the pads from above and is held in place by the plastic snap-on cover was installed by me backwards and although it seemed to be OK it would jam the pads and lock the brake. This could have been avoided if the factory service manual had an exploded diagram of the caliper and its parts. I wasted $30 on that manual, the worst I have ever seen. I could not figure out how to install the oil screen because the picture in the manual was too crappy to clearly see.

That, plus I was told by the factory rep that the 2007 GV muffler/manifold was interchangeable with my 2009 unit. The 2007 manifold was 3/4" too short, but luckily I found a muffler shop that was able to weld in a section of pipe from my old manifold. I am not favorably impressed with Kymco, compared with BMW or Japanese bikes. OK design but cheesy construction and materials.

Hey B and L!

I need a rear caliper for my 2009 GV... and possibly the rear master cylinder if the caliper doesn't solve the tight brake problem. If the price for both is reasonable I'll buy both.

Thanks for the suggestions, gentlemen. I don't have a parking brake and the fluid didn't squirt out when I opened the line, but it wouldn't hurt to rebuild or replace the master cylinder, anyway.  I don't think it's the caliper because it happened after I put the huge force on the handle, and the brake now sticks with both the old worn pads or the new thick ones. Two by four next time, duh.

I will report the solution when I find it....

Technical | How To / tight brakes

After changing the rear tire on my 2009 GV 250 I now have a very tight rear brake. I took apart the caliper, cleaned and silicone greased the pistons but it still locks up.  I'm now thinking it's the master cylinder because I put a huge amount of pressure on it when I loosened the rear axle nut. Any advice? Suggestions?

No need to apologize, Paul, and I do appreciate your intention. If the factory rep got it wrong, how can we mere mortals be expected to know better? Anyway, it worked out OK.

For Sale / Re: For Sale Kymco Grandvista 250 (All Years) exhaust

Warning: I recently bought a muffler/manifold off a 2007 GV 250 after the factory rep said it would fit my 2009 GV 250. It did fit the mounting brackets...but...the manifold was 3/4" too short. I was able to find a welder who cut a 3/4" piece out of my old manifold and welded it into the 2007 manifold.

Also, I see why Kymco eliminated the end cap on later models of the GV: it gets very hot because it is not insulated, connected metal to metal.

Grandvista 250 / parts source or good used rear caliper for GV 250

Anybody know where I can buy either a rebuild kit, or a good used rear caliper, for my 2009 GV 250?

Hiya Paul,

I bought the 2007 muffler and it had the same bracket locations...but it was 3/4" too short, wouldn't reach the mounting holes after tightening the manifold nuts.  Luckily I know of a good muffler shop where they cut the tubing and welded in 3/4" of tubing from the old muffler. Cost: $40.

The Kymco factory rep said it would fit. Ha!

I'm having problems finding parts. I need a caliper rebuild kit but I can't find a source. Suggestions?

Technical | How To / GV 250 oil screen position?
« on: May 22, 2017, 02:25:52 AM »
I forgot how the oil screen goes back in my '09 GV 250. On top of the spring? With the screen facing down or up? It seems to want to go with the screen up into the body of the engine and the gasket side down with the spring pushing it up...but I would appreciate expert advice to tell me the correct way to install it. I assume the round side of the spring faces down.

Will a 2007 GV 250 muffler fit on my 2009 GV 250? The 2007 has an endcap but not my 2009, which makes me reluctant to buy it on ebay.
