General Discussion / Re: Spark, compression & fuel but no start
« on: July 07, 2017, 05:55:59 PM »
I once had the carb float valve get stuck open, flooding the engine, killing it. If you have compression, spark and fuel delivery it's either not enough fuel...or too much...or the previous reply: something way more serious but not very probable.

Technical | How To / Re: Hbr Freight 12volt impact QUIT

My corded Harbor Freight 1/2" impact drive  lasted 15 years before falling apart; a new one cost me $40 this week, on sale from regularly $50.

I agree with others: the 12 volt stuff just doesn't do the job. The corded one draws 7 amps, which at 120 volts is 840 watts. Your 12 volt tool battery would have to provide 70 amps to equal that power. No way, Jose, unless you hooked it to a car battery.

Depends on how cold your winters get; the colder it gets, the lower first number is what you want (5 rather then 10 or 20). Here in sunny CA I use 10W-40 or 20W-50. Read your manual, they should show a chart for various temp ranges.

Praise be to Harbor Freight! This week I bought a 1/2" drive 120volt 7amp impact wrench at HF for $40, regularly $50.  After fifteen years use the old one finally wore out and that was from HF, too. Let's hope Mr. Prez, The Donald, doesn't put huge tariffs on China's exports.

Side By Side / Re: Regular, Mid Grade, or Premium Gas?
« on: June 30, 2017, 03:13:52 AM »

"Not a waste if your mfgr recommended a higher octane fuel. My older atv's all called for premium 91 octane fuel but the 450i just says regular fuel. I have used both 87 and 89 octane in it and see no difference."

The "difference" is the money you wasted buying higher octane for no valid reason.

"...higher octane has higher shelf life...." Says who?  A higher octane rating is strictly a measure of the fuel's pre-detonation ability, which high compression engines require or they will knock and possibly self-destruct under acceleration. The fact that 91octane is called "premium" and costs more doesn't make it better, more powerful, cleaner, etc. I wonder if the higher price for 91 is nothing more then Big Oil gouging us, like they did for a while when diesel was more expensive then gasoline. I know people, even mechanics, who believe 91 is better gas then 87.   "Hell, it's got a bigger number and costs more so it must be better, right?" Duh.

Downtown 300 / Re: Cheapest Kymco Parts

I like Leeson's, they were cheaper then Kymcomonster because they didn't charge for shipping and I got great, friendly service when I called them.

Technical | How To / stripped thread repair fix
« on: June 16, 2017, 03:04:57 AM »
The rear view mirror on my GV 250 is held on with two very small diameter screws, one of which stripped the cheesy pot metal bracket attached to the body. I found on ebay a Loctite product called "stripped thread repair kit" that makes new threads by using epoxy in the female and a repellent liquid on the screw so it doesn't become glued to the female when you form new threads.

It worked, but at $22+ it had damn well better.

Yeah, Mike, I thought the problem was solved but when I put a new set of pads in the rear caliper they locked up again, so I bought a new caliper...problem solved. finally.

a tip: I found that most of the air in the line will bubble up out of the master cylinder as you work the handle, then it took only two openings of the bleeder with the handle pulled in (I used a bungie) to get the rest of the air out of the line, doing the bleeding without a helper.

General Discussion / Re: do you really check tire pressures??
« on: June 14, 2017, 04:01:14 AM »
I bought a $20 electric (12 volt) tire pump (named "Slime) at Pepboys that has a surprisingly accurate pressure gauge on it and when I clamp it on the valve stem I know the pressure then, and as I add air. I power it with my battery charger or plug it into a cig lighter (my GV 250 has a 12 volt socket for cell phone charger) and it makes tire pressure maintenance almost fun. It measures 7"by7" by 3" and weighs about two pounds. It even has a bright spot light on it. The name alone makes it a winner.

Good advice.

I ordered a new caliper from Leeson's. I initially called kymcopartsmonster but I didn't like the $24 shipping they tried to quietly add to the $96 advertised price. It cost $106 from Leeson's with free shipping.

I give up: I ordered a new caliper from Leeson's: $106, shipped to my door.

Thanks, Stig and Redk, you have me shooting my morning coffee out my nose. "Banging it with a rock" definitely is a good way to relieve the frustration I am having with this third world corntraption. The manual tells me to first remove the muffler to remove the rear caliper. Stupid me! No wonder the rear brake is giving me problems, I removed the caliper without needing to remove the muffler. Maybe this is all a conspiracy to drive us westerners insane.
