General Discussion / Re: filtering in CA - crash

Here in CA we call it lane sharing, or white lining. It's at least 50% of why I ride on two wheels. Traffic here is baaad.

An appropriate tombstone for the biker: "I was dead right".

Welcome Alan!

I have found the several Kymcos I've owned to be well built and reliable. I use ebay, too, and have had good luck with generic parts but I had a Chinese made CVT belt fail at 1000 miles. I'm currently using a Gates belt on my Grandvista 250, so far so good. For Kymco parts I use Leeson's.

There are some very knowledgeable and helpful scooterists on this forum so don't hesitate to ask for help when you need it.

The Downtown had one switch bad when I bought it with 11,000 miles on it. The second went bad shortly afterward and of course the bike wouldn't crank. The Grandvista had 10,000 miles on it when the first switch stopped working. It's a ten minute job to replace it on the GV: one screw to remove it and two push-on connectors. I don't recall whether the Downtown had any plastic to remove to get at the switches. I gotta give credit to MJR on our forum, or Mike the Master as I call him, the brilliant mechanic who repaired the switches on the Downtown. I watched and learned how to do it watching him.

The generic starter relay on ebay  at $12 is a perfect fit and has been working perfectly. I also bought a generic starter motor for $36, just in case. Let's face it, there probably will be a day when we can't get parts from Kymco for our older bikes.

I have had both brake light switches on my Downtown300 fail and one on my Grandvista250. The contacts can be cleaned up by popping open the switch with a knife and sanding the contacts, or you can buy a pair of generic switches on ebay for $8, shipping included. Kymco gets $20 plus shipping for theirs, not to mention the long wait. I don't know if Kymco uses the same switches on all their bikes but for 8 bucks it seems like a good gamble, no?

I'd love to "bare" with you, Nireen, but it's a bit chilly here at the moment. How about a raincheck?

If it isn't too fast an idle speed (above 1700rpm), did it creep before you changed the CVT parts? If it only happened after the change I'd check to see if the belt is the correct size, the rollers are correct weight, etc. Compare the new parts with the old in other words.

Maybe the fuel pump lost its prime from running till empty. I'd test it out of the machine in a small tub of gas being careful to keep the electrical contacts and battery far from the gasoline.  Be careful when working with fuel. I doubt that the oil has anything to do with this problem.

Thanks for sharing that, Dale. I'll try it. I removed the lumbar support on both my Grandvistas so I could move my butt forward and back from time to time, which is how I handle long rides.

I had the same problem on my DT300; it had two seat locks, which is overkill, so I removed the bracket on the seat pan for the lock that didn't trigger the light switch.

Grandvista 250 / Re: 2005 GV250 want to sell
« on: November 13, 2022, 07:18:03 PM »
All the previous suggestions are on the mark. Scooter prices have recently increased dramatically so I'd price it higher then you think it's worth and see what happens, especially since you have a quality bike with low mileage in excellent condition. Don't lower your price if you don't get a lot of interest; the scooter market is relatively small, plus this is the slow season. If you lived closer I'd be interested as I'm down to two GV250's at the moment. Good luck.

I had the exact same problem with the 2011 DT300 I owned and although it seemed to solve itself i never trusted it completely so I sold it despite many months of flawless performance. Please keep us posted on your experience with this mysterious ailment/hiccup.

I would install a cheap belt, leave the CVT cover off, put it on the center stand (or rig up a center stand) and watch the action of the CVT/belt as I worked the throttle. Then I would ride it a while, stop and feel all the parts for excessive heat and wear. Also check to make sure the CVT air vent is not blocked.

I have a buddy who rides a scooter without a CVT cover! He said he avoids puddles and dirt roads and hasn't had a problem. Although I wouldn't do that it seems leaving the cover off might help you find the problem in this case.

If not the wrong width then it's the wrong (smaller) belt circumference, which would also cause the UTV to start in a higher "gear" ratio, giving the illusion of loss of power.

I doubt that 213psi is a correct compression rating. If you divide 213 by 14.7, (the normal air pressure at sea level) you get a compression ratio of 14.5 to 1, which seems too high. A ratio of 10 to 1 is considered high compression but within reason, which would give a reading of 147psi. I'd like to know the compression reading you get after the repairs.
