People 50 / Re: New member - 2005 Kymco People 50

P.S.

You didn't mention the mileage the bike has on it, or how long it's been sitting unused. Now that we burn unleaded gas spark plugs rarely cause problems and a can of additive in the gas tank may do the job of cleaning your carburetor. I'd first ride it a couple hundred miles and you might find it running and starting much better. I'd change the oil and inspect the air filter and CVT drive belt.  Good luck, happy riding.

"Pingy"? I'd get some fresh premium gas into the tank and hopefully get rid of the pinging.

Oops!

The South Bay Club meets in Torrance, not Lomita. Here's their website:

Welcome,

You might be interested in group rides with the South Bay Scooter Club on the first Saturday of every month or the Long Beach Scooter Club, which has several group rides every year. There is also a Los Angeles Scooter Club that is very active.

Google their websites and sign up for notification of their events. Additionally, The South Bay club sponsors the largest group rally on the west coast every year and it's coming up in September. We typically have 200 scooters in that rally, some coming from hundreds of miles away.

All brands of scooters are welcome in these clubs.

General Discussion / Re: How To Change Dash Display Question

An easy approximate way to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit: double C and add 25. Example: 30 degrees Celsius X 2= 60, add 25= 85F.

The accurate conversion formula is  9/5 X C+32= F   So: 30 X 9/5=54, plus 32= 86F exactly.

As C climbs higher than 30, or drops below 30, the approximation formula is less accurate but close enough for government work, as they say.

Downtown 300 / Re: Changing rotors to my downtown 350

A tip: If the rotor machine screws are difficult to remove due to the locktite, apply heat to the screw heads with a propane torch for a few seconds and they should easily break loose.

I agree with Rufus: snug them up without using a torque wrench unless you are not a confident "wrencher". The locktite will be your insurance.

Technical | How To / Re: Horn
« on: May 20, 2023, 06:02:10 PM »
I'd pull the wire connections off the horn, clip a volt meter to the two wires (one side of the horn may be grounded in which case you clip the + probe to the horn wire the other to ground) press the horn and see if it's getting 12 volts. If it is, the horn is bad, if no voltage the problem is either the horn switch, the horn relay if there is one (see the wiring diagram), a loose wire or bad ground...or less likely, a fuse. My vote is a bad horn. Please report the solution.

I replaced the rear caliper on my Grandvista 250 and it cost $100 from Kymco via Leeson's, which seems a bargain to me compared to trying to repair it. I tried once to rebuild a caliper and it leaked anyway. I hope you have better luck than I did.

General Discussion / Re: have you ever bought used tires?
« on: May 16, 2023, 09:00:42 PM »
Back in the days when I was trying to support a family on a teacher's salary I'd go to Pick-A-Part and find wheels with tires that fit my cars. Sometimes a wrecked car had almost new tires on it and they were a bargain considering they were already mounted, balanced and holding air. The price was the same no matter the condition so bargains were possible.

They have one thing in their favor here in California: It does not require a motorcycle license to ride (drive) it. The standard automobile license test in CA is a lot easier to pass then the motorcycle test.

A wonderful movie made around the 50's with Peter Sellers featured Malta. It is titled "Captain's Paradise", about a Malta ferry captain who has two wives, one in each port.

General Discussion / Re: Owning a scooter and motorcycle
« on: February 17, 2023, 07:58:48 PM »
My reason hasn't been mentioned: I have two identical 2009 Grandvista 250's because I want to have one for spare parts if something breaks and I can't find the part anywhere else. And even if I could order the part at least I have one to ride in the meantime.

The GV is the perfect bike for me. The electric folding mirrors allow me to lane share with confidence, the flat floor allows my feet and legs to not stick out as they do on a motorcycle. In my neck of the woods traffic is a major problem and because lane sharing, or white lining, is legal in California it's an important part of my riding technique.

My experience on five different scooters taught me to not be timid on the throttle when starting from stopped: you want to get the clutch engaged quickly and then let the CVT do the shifting. Also, use both hands simultaneously when braking. I bet you will love being shiftless and feet free.
