General Discussion / Thought I'd give our local Kymco dealer a try
« on: July 31, 2020, 01:44:23 PM »
I like to replace my belt every 3 seasons. And I want to get the 23100-KEB7-900 which is a 737 x 18 x 30 belt. So I called our dealer in Groton, CT and they did not have the belt.

But..... they had a Kymco order going out soon and I could get my belt with that order. So I asked the price:

Well its suddenly now a special order that will be $65 plus tax. ????

Just funny how an order going out soon becomes a special order. I politely told them it was too much for me.

I would get one from my favorite scootertunning.ca but I don't know the quality of the Gates Motoforce belts they have.

https://www.scootertuning.ca/en/variators-sport-drive-belt/77006-drive-belt-motoforce-kymco.html

Let me ask, would a 738 x 18 x 30 from parts for scooters suffice being a mm longer?

Technical | How To / Using a 1mm longer belt
« on: July 12, 2020, 04:27:10 PM »
Just browsing for a new belt. The S8 uses a 728 mm stock belt and this website has no 728's but have plenty of 738's. Would using a 1mm longer belt make a diff. providing the width is still 18 mm and V-angle 30 ?

Also, if I go to racing planet and run my model of scooter, some of the belts that come up are in the range from 737 to 748 mm with slightly diff. V-angles. So I have to assume 1mm will be no real diff and should grab this one along with new clutch pads.

My goto Scubatunning.ca doesnt have those parts listed unfortunately.

Technical | How To / How is the Small End Bearing Lubricated
« on: July 08, 2020, 11:08:14 AM »
Its been about 2k miles since I re-did my top end after either a wrist-pin or a small end bearing failed after 6k hard miles. So now that I am working on my scooter again while working reduced hours I am wondering what caused the initial failure.

Some questions come to mind: Would upjetting for more lubrication help with the prevention of a circlip or small end bearing failure ? Could a lean condition have caused the failures. when there was no signage of seizing soft or hard?

I don't know exactly what part actually failed as the small end bearing  disintegrated along with one of the circlips.

The scooter is running well now after 9k total miles and wonder if a little extra lubrication from an upjet would add a factor of safety to prevent a wristpin(circlip) or small end bearing failure.

Then the question is: how is the small end bearing lubricated in a 2 stroke motor since its at the bottom of the piston ?

Technical | How To / Pilot Jet Size for Pod Filter
« on: July 01, 2020, 01:26:40 PM »
I want to give a pod filter a try, and the stock pilot/idle jet is #35.

Its been mentioned I should go 1 to 2 sizes up on the idle jet.

The next size available is #38 https://jetsrus.com/carburetor/carb_keihin_PB_carb_parts.html

So that would be 3 sizes up or 1 size up.

Thanks

Super 8 / Naraku Traffic Exhaust Review
« on: June 26, 2020, 09:37:19 PM »
I just bought this exhaust to replace the de-restricted exhaust on the 2013 Kymco Super 8 49cc.

After yanking out the restriction and installing it, the scooter was very zippy with greater acceleration than the stock de-restricted exhaust. It is a great performance pipe IMO.

The restriction is a thick cone washer held on by 2 tack welds. Once the welds are ground down and broken, id did take considerable effort to remove the cone as it was in there pretty tight.

BUT Its sounds absolutely FREAKING HORRIBLE.

I liken the sound to someone scratching their nails on a chalk board and broadcasting it with a giant megaphone. I feel I would be run out of town riding around with this exhaust sounding like it did.

I can't ride it like that and I can't return it after de-restricting so its going in the garbage or the transfer station to get recycled. I don't think I would even want to give this a way.

I may try and sell on ebay with no minimum bid but I'd prefer to toss it out and move on and swallow the loss.

That's my honest opinion and review of this exhaust.

Looks like all the plastic wall material where the bolts hold the visor/windshield to the scooter have disintegrated. Anyone know where to get a good replacement visor or a universal one that doesnt require the mirror arms to mount ? I have side arm mirrors now and have removed the stock mirrors.

Also, are visor bolt patterns universal ?

I could get large washers and longer bolts but that would look like crap unless maybe I painted them black.

Another possibility is to fill the holes with epoxy and re-drill the bolt holes and use rubber washers for dampening. And then hoping the epoxy bonds with the plastic well.

There is this one here but was looking for a cheaper option https://www.scooterdynasty.com/windshieldfor50cc-150cckymcosuper8.aspx

Technical | How To / Re-Sleeving Cylinder
« on: June 30, 2018, 10:33:15 AM »
On my 2013 Super 8 2T, I just installed a new complete top end. So far 21 nice miles with it.

My old stock cylinder is scoured from the circlip/wrist pin bearing failure after 8k miles. Would it be worth to send this cylinder out to get resleeved if its possible and fitted with a new piston so I can have a spare top end in case of another failure or maybe swap it out after a few years of wear and tear?

The SSP-G HOCA kit I used costs $150 and I cant really compare it to the stock top end.

http://www.partsforscooters.com/169-404-Hoca-39mm-Kymco-Air-Cooled-Cylinder-Kit

Also, do people change their piston and rings after a certain amount of miles as a regular maint thing ?

I'm not too sure how long the SSP-G Hoca kits last and do know bike racers replace top ends every 25 hrs. I rode pretty hard for 8k trouble free  miles and can't fault Kymco in any way. Maybe I need to pull back on the throttle a bit more instead of always keeping up with traffic and let cars pass. Also, I may put on heavier sliders to decrease RPM's.

One note to the 2-stroke riders: The damaged piston and chamber was as clean as a whistle. Hardly a speck of carbon from using amsoil 2-stroke oil.

General Discussion / Cut ear of wristpin retainer clip ??

My piston kit came with G shape circlips. Should I cut off the ears (G part) to reduce chance of failure ?

Super 8 / Blew a Piston and cylinder :(
« on: June 18, 2018, 06:29:38 PM »
After 8k perfect miles running spectacular, one of the circular spring clips that hold the piston to the rod broke off and ended up in the cylinder probably via a port. Thankfully it was a half mile from my home and I was going to take it to work the next day.

So I need a new cylinder and piston. Does anyone know where to get them sent to Connecticut, USA ?

I may have small piece or two in the what seems like sealed crank case but I doubt they will can any major issues.

I may be able to salvage the head as it just has a few beads of molten metal fused to it.

Thanks

General Discussion / Making these seats more bearable......
« on: April 24, 2016, 12:54:15 PM »
Right now I am working on making this Super 8 seat more bearable to ride.

I am working on modifying a horse saddle pad someone gave me to attach to the seat.

http://www.amazon.com/Toklat-Original-Superquilt-General-Purpose/dp/B0096MGN54

But something that crossed my mind is the possibility of adding a car headreset as a backrest.
I have some spare headrests I took from my Kia Forte that were too tall and reduced visibility;
so I swapped them with the rears and put the fronts in the basement.

What if I cut the rods on the headrest, threaded them, and poked them thru the seat and
bolted them with a strip of aluminium or wood to increase stiffness.

Other options would be a bag of dogfood or charcoal brickettes.

I have not tried a scooter that has one of those small back rest humps on the seat so I wouldn't know.

Would such a plan make longer rides easier on the back??

Technical | How To / I like this performance mod but.......
« on: April 20, 2016, 01:01:14 PM »
I like the thought of this performance mod but boy I should hold off until getting some feedback.

What it entails it using a Ford ignition coil p/n XW4U-12A366-BB XW4U-BB $6 on ebay (just search the p/n).

You trim the rubber boot on the Ford Coil and use a bracket to hold it onto the Kymco Plug.

Since the coil is a basic 2 wire coil, you simply get the Ford wiring or make a simple connector and replace the Kymco coil.

According to this thread, it gives a dramatic performance boost.

http://49ccscoot.proboards.com/thread/11637/looking-get-performance-edge-mod

I have mixed feelings, but for the price and the fact others have done it with no harm, it may be worth a try.

I was trying to remove the left hand switch. Seems like someone glues the top screw in there and the head go stripped. Attempted to turn it 90 deg to get better leverage and ended up cracking the front plate. The weight of the mirror is stressing it during the ride now and is shaking.

I am seeing a few and would like to know if a 2007 People would fit or what models will fit the 2013 S8??

If anyone knows a USA source, please let me know.

Thanks

In the mean time I'll try to drill and tap some screw holes for a small plate or do a gorilla glue job on it.

The side handle bar mirrors would be another solution.
