another good visual demonstration of how the 2 diff pulley sizes affect the speed.

Does anyone know when the first, real, 'modern' version of our cvt was used? I mean variator with rollers, belt, centrifugal clutch, etc.? (not an old leather belt and wooden pulleys!)

Rexnord and others have been making low speed variable drives for industry since the 1800's. The modern, "high speed" drives by T.B. Woods, Reliance, Dodge (not the car guys, the industrial guys) and others using rubber belts since the 1970's that I am familiar. Golf carts from late 70's early 80's used rubber belts and centrifugal clutches.

snowmobiles have used CVTs ever since I remember

The Dutch DAF econo-car made from 1961 had two belt-drive CVTs, one on each rear wheel, driven by a 750cc flat twin similar to a BMW flat twin.  If one belt broke, you could still make it home with the remaining one-wheel drive. Fun stuff! That's when cars were cars. If I could buy one now, I would. (DAF is now owned by PACCAR and makes trucks)
