Replacing auto enricher with manual one
« on: August 27, 2016, 01:51:27 AM »
I've had my Kymco People 50 2T for over a year now and I love the scooter but am totally frustrated by the electric enricher.

I can either get the carb tuned to start and run well cold or start and run well warm our hot, but not both. I've cleaned the carb, replaced the enricher, tested it, adjusted, adjusted, adjusted. Just can't get it right. Doesn't help that in Denver, we have 40 degree temperature swings in a day.

I've read a few posts and blogs where guys have made their own manual enricher and thought I'd give it a go. There are some  new available at scooter sites, but I couldn't tell if they'd work with the Kymco and they are pretty pricey, around $30.

I'll add lots of detail as I go. Bought a choke cable from Aliexpress. $4.20 delivered. That's the total cost of the project except for a little epoxy. https://m.aliexpress.com/item/32513446829.html?trace=wwwdetail2mobilesitedetail&productSubject=New-30-Bike-Push-Pull-Choke-Throttle-Cable-For-Yamaha-PW50-PW80-Y-Zinger-Kits&spm=2114.13010608.0.56.zRrD0S&#autostay

Took out my auto enricher and unscrewed the base from the top.
This is what's in there.

There's some glue on the threads, but it does come apart. Be careful not to ruin the o ring at the bottom. That's an air seal on the carb body.

This is the part that actually opens and closes the enrichment circuit.

I cut the pin off the end because I don't need that gradual opening that the electric actuator relies on.

I used a hack saw to cut apart the wax melting part. I'm using the bottom part to hold my cable.

I took a brake adjuster off a bike and used it to adjust cable slack.

I drilled a hole in the top of the enricher and since it's soft plastic, I just screwed the brake adjuster into it.

I cut off a bit of the spring to approximate length I thought I'd need and put it inline to provide some auto closing.

I put the cable through the brass piece I cut off and frayed the end and spread it out to give it something to pull against.

Then I used epoxy to glue this to the valve.

This picture is before I glued it

Had to remember to put the spring in before gluing.

Here it is after gluing but with the base still off.

Very elegant fix! I had an Agility 50 when we were working in Golden at Dakota Ridge RV Park that was really cranky to run on a cold start. You have found the solution!

I'm curious to see how well it works as the weather gets colder.

So a couple of cautionary notes if you decide to build it this way. Once you glue the cable on the opener, you can't take it back apart to adjust anything. You want to be very sure the cable length is about right and can be adjusted with the bicycle barrel adjuster.  You might want to use a lighter spring. I have to pull harder than I'd like to open the choke. The spring does certainly make sure the circuit is closed when I let go of it.

Haven't used it yet in cold weather, but I'm assuming it will work as well or better than the auto enricher.
