Cruel responders will reply a Honda but I'll spare you that,
My first scooter was a Yamaha BWS which was a supper unit. It went like a bomb but it didn't like my weight - 250Lb and the Montreal potholes ate up the tiny wheels.
I just did my 1000 Km check on my new '11 Super 2T. It carries me well and the 14 wheels are better for the holes but slllooowwwww!!!
My first move was a muffler and larger carb jet. No better. Next was new rollers - still no improvement. Rollers again and the top speed is now 50Km. It requires 1/2 throttle to get it moving by which time it's screaming, and it's no quicker. It's cost untold dollars and now all I want is for it to be back to original.
Because of the loud muffler and the high revs everyone assumes I want to drag them away from the light - and then I creep away. More than once I've been the subject of road rage. I can't blame them. They're pissed and so am I.
Buy a GPS with the money.

thanks for the replies so far guys.

luigi,
 hows this for a variator? http://www.ebay.com/itm/performance-Variator-for-KYMCO-People-50-ZX-50-Super-8-50-/331080013215?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4d15e8159f&vxp=mtr (http://www.ebay.com/itm/performance-Variator-for-KYMCO-People-50-ZX-50-Super-8-50-/331080013215?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4d15e8159f&vxp=mtr)

sixpac, you mean you got an exhaust with an expansion chamber and didn't see a difference in performance at all?

Call this guy..

.Louie Peverini
Scooter Parts International
800-591-2670

Scooter Parts International "
http://www.spi-parts.com/ (http://www.spi-parts.com/)

He just made a deal w/ us for dealer pricing. Do us ALL a favor... If you call him, and say you have 400.00 to spend don't waste his time, and say I have to ask my GF. Be prepared to spend, and get the results you want.
I promise you on my dogs lives... Whatever you are looking at elsewhere is going to be close to DOUBLE what you can get from Louie. Don't take my word... Call him, and tell him you want to sign on as a dealer thru the forum

I would suggest a pipe, a couple carb jets, Contra spring and a variator with a roller tuning kit. You might even be able to pick up a clutch all within your budget.
Stay away from Ebay for 2 stroke parts.
There is SOME good stuff but mostly crap. I know. I bought at least one of everything.

If you want something to last several years years I would recommend :

http://www.spi-parts.com/scooter-parts-performance/kymco/polini-variator-kymco-people-50.html (http://www.spi-parts.com/scooter-parts-performance/kymco/polini-variator-kymco-people-50.html)

http://www.spi-parts.com/brand/tecnigas/trek-kymco-super-9-top-boy.html (http://www.spi-parts.com/brand/tecnigas/trek-kymco-super-9-top-boy.html)

Even at his advertised prices you can get all the goodies. Now imagine dealer discount...
These are just some suggestions. Louie knows way more than I do so take his advice above mine. I'm just looking at what I would buy for MY needs.
You still need a few idle, and main jets, and a contra spring. I would just get the stiffest he has or the Malossi red w/ the nylon spacer. The spacer pre loads the spring for more tension, and allows the spring to slide instead of twisting. It's not a GREAT part but it does help dial in the springs. Add or remove it to see if you need stiffer or softer. Usually stiffest or one step below work best for adult sized people. Same for the Fly springs. you will have to rev to near full if you set it that way but when the clutch grabs... Hold on. Of course you don't have to get all radical when tuning, and the bike will last alot longer if you don't but it's just too tempting to build a monster 50cc.
If I were REAL smart... I would have stuck w/ a kit like the one I posted. It does no one any good to keep a tuned bike in the shed.

Better yet... BUY mine. 3,000 payments of .50 cents spread over 24 hours, and it's all yours! (plus interest to be determined)

thanks for your info zombie, i'd consider buying yours if I hadn't already bought mine, hehe.

I just got this thing to enjoy for a year or maybe two maximum. I will get my motorcycle licence after that and get something with at least 650cc.

I'm a little concerned as the six pac poster said he changed the exhaust and didn't notice any difference?  might that be the case for me as well?
Title: Re: 400$ to mod my scoot, what should I get?
Post by: zombie on May 03, 2014, 07:14:49 PM
That's impossible to answer. Performance depends on EVERYTHING working together. You can install a 24mm carb, and 400.00 pipe that will do nothing if you belt is too short, or the wrong spark plug is used.

Strictly speaking if all is in good working order, and everything is know to be within spec. engine performance upgrades HAVE to work. It's a physics thing

It sounds like the fella did the right things but maybe never got it balanced correctly. You can throw a pipe, and carb that are supposed to add 2-3 HP, and have the bike not even start. It's all got to be done right.

polini variator with boss
and cdi tricky way for more rpm
and i would highly suggest to you polini its a quality thing
improved my performance very very goood
but i don't recommend to spend 400$
its a super8 it will not ever be fast as competition you woud meet on road
over-moding you scoot will make you a friend with the scooter mechanic....

I am going for it.  8)

I must say though that even with just the simple de restrictions without any mods, this is one hell of fun thing to ride around. It's little 50cc engine is impressive. Although a little slow up steep hills, on the downhills its king. lol

as long as  I ride it in 30mph roads its fine.

40mph roads can be dangerous as everyone is always trying to pass you and some crazily impatient people even act as if they are trying to ram you from behind (hey pal, I'm at full throttle here).

overall I'm very happy with the scoot.

The Contra spring will help up hills, and you have the right attitude for the bike. It's not a ninja but it can keep up w/ traffic (modded). It's dirt cheap to run, and basically just all day fun.

I've ridden NOTHING but modded 50cc scoots for the past 8 years, and will never ride anything else. I feel like a clown driving a hemi powered roller skate! It's a BLAST!!!  ;D

Expansion exhaust to get more pep outa that 50.   Anyone will do just have to match it with jetting.        Ive never had the stock cylinder however.    Mine came with Airsal t6 which for 50cc is crazy fast with pipe.   If you want to be stealthy get Malossi 70cc kit and mod stock exhaust.

Mine is modded stock exhaust, stock carb with aftermarket filter and 105jet,    NCY race clutch,   stock var,    Malossi 70cc sport cylinder.    I get 45mph and its tolerable noise wise.   ALOT of low end power this way and if you can believe it pretty darn good mileage.

Imagine a Harley engine in your 200.

That's how we see modified 50cc scoots.
One of the Maxi scoot guys posted about top speed... My 74ishcc matches theirs, and gets there 2-3 times quicker. No need for more scooter weight when you have Cahone's the size of watermellons.

This scooter can surprise some Kimura.

I was on a back road with a 25 MPH speed limit, I was doing 35-40 in front of a Harley rider with his girl friend; at one point he just decided he didn't want me leading him so he eventually passed me out doing about 50 arms almost rubbing.

Just ordered the purple spring and 8 Gm Dr Pulley Sliders and a Jet Kit, gonna need help getting that 14 mm nut off as its frozen as if loctite was used on it.

Kimura, Do you want to attempt chamfering the cylinder ports? If not I'd be 100% positive your installer does it, and I mean like watching him do it.
This step is vital to a long lasting kit.
Also you will have to baby the bike just like a new engine break in. For the first 100 miles stay below 1/2 throttle. After that creep up on full for short 30-45 second runs, and back down again. At 150-200 miles you can start running wot.

If the jetting is not right the kit won't last one mile. Listen for odd noises in the exhaust. The bike should sound just like it always has. If something sounds wrong stay off the throttle.

the service department where i bought the scoot is totally backed up so they told me to look somewhere else to get the mods done.

I found another place and he said that to do, 1) 70cc big bore kit 2) variator and contra spring 3) the underglow lights, he would charge me 3 hours time, is that about right?

Also, it seems like a mostly motorcycle place, I didn't see any scooters around.  Do you guys think it would be a good thing to print out instructions on how to do the big bore kit and variator installs and bring them with me when he does the work?

3 hrs is very fair for that. I'm surprised you got such a nice quote. Ask him about any balancing that needs doing after a BBK and if they will make sure the BBK is in there secure and not being detrimental to other components.

Your scooter wont be street legal without tags and not many are after mods and thats maybe why that dealer didn't help you.

Not too many states they do care, but if an accident does happen, believe me; the caring starts and liabilities will be assigned.

I brought them the new belt today, they said it was damaged on the inside. I had 900 miles on it, is it possible that a belt could get damaged with such little use  by a  bad install from the dealer?

Title: Re: 400$ to mod my scoot, what should I get?
Post by: zombie on September 12, 2014, 10:07:48 PM
No not really. You will not notice a difference if the new kit is NOT tuned correctly tho.
Lets start from the beginning...

You installed a 70cc kit. Which one?
What else was installed or changed that day?
Are your WOT rpm's the same? higher? lower?
Title: Re: 400$ to mod my scoot, what should I get?
Post by: kimura on September 13, 2014, 07:53:41 PM
i think its malossi 70cc kit (i got it from spi)
the malossi multivar (variator, roller weights, white contra spring)
changed to a new belt.

i picked it up from the shop today and rode it for 10miles.  I didn't really test it and kept the speed below 25mph. It feels ok to me but i don't know much about scoots anyway. It def has a quicker take off (first 20 yards). It sounds like its revving higher than before and when i let go of the throttle completely its obvious that the revs are staying higher until i come to a complete stop. but so far i can't notice anything wrong with it, so thats a good start.

how slowly should i break in the new cylinder?
Title: Re: 400$ to mod my scoot, what should I get?
Post by: zombie on September 13, 2014, 08:03:47 PM
Stay below 1/2 throttle for at least 100 miles, and then open it up slowly for short high speed runs 5-10 seconds at a time. LISTEN to the cylinder, and pipe. If you hear anything like a rattle or popping sounds back off immediately. That would suggest LEAN running. I would get 2-3 new spark plugs to do some inspections on. In fact pull out you plug today and either post a pict or describe what you see.

Have you added some 2t oil to the fuel tank? About one ounce for break in.

The higher rpm may also suggest lean running. Turn your idle mix screw (small screw on carb) either direction till you get the highest rpm you can then adjust the idle speed with the larger screw.

which end of the carb is your mix screw on? The air box side or the engine side?
If it's on the air box side you will turn it in 1/4 turn clockwise after you get the highest rpm.
If it's on the engine side you will turn it 1/4 turn counter clockwise after the highest rpm.
This just richens the circuit a tiny bit to avoid lean running.
Title: Re: 400$ to mod my scoot, what should I get?
Post by: kimura on September 14, 2014, 07:42:14 PM
put 2t oil where I put the gas or in the container under my seat?

im not sure but it kinda sounds like something is knocking not all the time and never when its idling. is that normal?
Title: Re: 400$ to mod my scoot, what should I get?
Post by: zombie on September 14, 2014, 08:23:54 PM
2t oil in the gas tank.

Get a roll of solder from the hardware store. Pull out the spark plug, and feed the solder into the cylinder till it hits the cylinder wall.
You need to spin the piston thru one fire cycle with the kick start. That will push the piston into the solder up against the head, and squish down the solder to reveal how much clearance there is between the piston, and the head.
This is actually a critical step. If the clearance is too small the bike will knock at mid-high rpm  eventually breaking something. or if it is too large a gap the bike will not develop full power.

You want the gap between the top edge of the piston, and the head to be 0.5 - 0.8 mm for a Malossi sport cylinder. I have run them as high as 4mm gap. This is called the Squish band, and is critical. The way it's adjusted is by adding or removing cylinder base gaskets or shims

I am brand spanking new to this and have found your posts and the replies very insightful. I've just recently bought my super8 50 2t ( looks just like yours )and I only have 166 miles on it so far. It  came with a larger dia jet and a smooth boss in a bag under the seat compartment. I'm planning on changing these 2 things after the break in period. I was wondering how your scooter is running. Are you satisfied with the choices you've made? Would you have done anything differnt? And I'm sorry to bother you but can you please tell me exactly what the parts are that you've put on your scooter? Thanks very much for your time. Sent twice, sorry

so far things are good.  Ive been increasing my speed little by little, so far it seems to max out at 40mph. Its not a problem for me because Im really happy with the acceleration.

With a pipe, and proper carb you will have better accel, and reach 50-60MPH depending on the pipe you choose.
I'm glad to hear it is running well.

been taking my scoot for a spin every 2 weeks but yesterday there was too much snow and I just let it run a little.

After having done my 70 kit and variator, I'm ready to get a carb and pipe for this next season :)

I'd LOVE to but I have a remodel job I'm finishing in the next two weeks. Big $$$'s, and easy work.

Maybe you could find your way up to Carrabelle, and I'll buy the drinks!

I went to key west and swung by moped hospital looking for a pipe and carb but they said theres been a change in ownership and they're not really into the performance parts business. or something like that.

the drive down there from miami is breathtaking!

Translation:

We dont want to deal with modded scooters cause people may sue us for making their bikes illegal. Im sensing that.

Dont forget Bettin my still have the old carbs and intakes that he says will add maybe 5 MPH to the bike. Id like someone to get one and confirm that.

Hows you BBK doing ?

hi Chris, ,my bbk is doing great.  I'm maxing out at 42mph as well, but the acceleration there is very good (it even leaps) and with a new pipe and carb, I'm looking to make it great.

hows your scoot?  going to do any upgrades this season?

I'm going to go with the noraku traffic pipe, could send me link me to a carb for the 2T?

thank you!

My scooter is in the basement right now. Easier than expected getting it down but wondering how easy is it to get it back up. Waiting for a couple of feet of snow to melt first.

I would like to do a supplemental headlight mod.

I would love to do a carb mod that would increase MPH by 5, not sure what to buy and how to jet it. I dont want to throw money into something that wont make a difference. I would like sound confirmation or a guarantee before spending $165.

Im glad to hear your BBK is doing well as now your coiled up and ready to fly with the right carb and pipe mod. Sounds to me the BBK was done well.

Still wondering if the clutch is really restricted with that bead of weld. There really has been no confirmation on it. I can grind it off but what is the sense of doing so if its not really a restriction. Best to leave it alone until its confirmed also and that grinding it off wont hurt anything.

When I here stories of people having issues with clanging pulleys, scoots that wont start, and shredded belts after doing what is supposed to be quality high performance upgrades, Im hesitant to spend money on a new variator, clutch, or carb. May as well accept 42 MPH as its 10 more than this bike is stock although 45-50 MPH would be sweet.

I put about 4000 miles on the bike in the 6 months I road it and that's about 3500 more than I expected. And all made possible by Bettin, Zombie, and Josh who are pretty much it for the entire planet for mod assistance with this bike. Imagine 3 people out of 7 billion people has made my Super8 experience fairly decent and a big improvement over stock.

It really does surprise me how little info there is. Compare the info to the number of guys that mod these things, and it makes me shake my head...

Ive been looking around for a carb at spi parts and other places and it seems they cost from 160$-200$, is that right? which size should I get 19mm or 21mm?

After doing some reading, I would guess as Im not an expert.

1) 19 mm carb if you buy and exhaust w/o expansion chamber.

2) 21 mm carb if you get an exhaust with expansion chamber.

Make sure to get matching manifolds or adapters.

Then you'll have to decide on what to do with the air side if you need an open air filter or mods to the airbox.

Here is a 19mm but note the bottom paragraph about matching the right carb to your bike. http://www.provoscooter.com/arreche-19mm-carburetor-kymco.html (http://www.provoscooter.com/arreche-19mm-carburetor-kymco.html)
