Break In procedures?
« on: April 06, 2018, 02:54:06 PM »
I've done a search, and found so much confusing and conflicting information about break-in procedures, that I really don't know exactly what the correct process is!

I'm within a day or so of pulling the trigger on the purchase of a new Xciting 400i, and I want to make absolutely, positively certain that I break it in properly and correctly.

Can someone with experience explain specifically and in detail what the proper break in procedure is and should be?

This is going to be a long-term deal for me, and I would like to get the absolute most out of it, as I probably won't be buying another scooter for the next decade. I want to get it right.

Thanks!
Two things to consider...
1) The early bird might get the worm, but the second mouse always gets the cheese.
2) Eagles may soar, but weasels never get sucked into jet engines.

Owner's manual will explain break in basics.
Scooter forums often recommend varying the engine speeds, load and unload the engine with the throttle. No riding at steady speeds for any length of time. ...fast nor slow.
Keep speed limits per the manual during this period.

It is a pain.....but has worked perfectly for me ....my 4 scooters burned no oil after proper break in.

Of course tires and to a lesser degree brakes need to get the new off.

Change the oils following manual....or sooner, like many of us.
(engine and gear)

Might watch video on applying ACF-50 to motorcycles. Prevent rust and corrosion.

And, I'm feeling a little peculiar.

What Stig said, Evil. The conflicting info you found is because of differing opinions! There are thousands of riders, pilots, mechanics and engineers that all have different opinions about breaking in a reciprocating engine. Not many are wrong! Sorta like the reality of "any oil is better than no oil!" Follow Stig's outline and you won't be wrong. We ALL want it to be a long term relationship!

Excellent advice from the Master, and precisely what I'd hoped for. Many, many thanks!

Why, yes, I have! Best $250 I ever spent.  Saved me from getting creamed by a cager more than once...

:) Outstanding!

??? when you rebuilt a airplane engine, did you break it in easy and push and pull the throttle,  or full throttle on take off and steady on cruse,  I helped install a Merlin engine in a Lancaster bomber in Alert , top of the world , and it was full throttle on take off with over 20 hours flight home base,  for the high artic flying , the bomb bay are all gas tanks 408 Sqad.,

Dedee, planes have a team to repair them, limited flight hours before tear down, unlimited check book, maybe even run in or bench tested on the wing.
We're not making this stuff up...it's in most owner's manuals. Not a conspiracy.
But I  do understand no moving a ride it like you stole it team member - plenty of them out there in that club ;-)
We gotta agree to disagree.
