Title: Anyone know the Downtown's GVWR?
Post by: ScooterWolf on July 14, 2015, 03:53:18 PM
I'm trying to calculate the scooter Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, but can't seem to find any info in the owner's manual.

You mean how much weight it can ( safely) carry?

Owner's Manual net weight: 411 pounds.   Found on page 49

Yeah, I saw that. But is that the total net (wet) weight, or the GVWR?

When applied to this formula it doesn't work out.

GVWR: 411
Scooter Dry Weight: 367
Scooter Wet Weight (add App. 40 lbs.) 40
367 + 40 = 407 (dry weight plus weight of fluids - oil, gas, etc ... )

Available load capacity: (GVRW - Wet weight) 411 - 407 = 4 lbs.

Since the GVWR can't be 4 lbs, this leads me to believe that the Net weight of 411 in the owner's manual is the Downtown's actual wet weight, and not its GVWR. From what I've seen the GVWR is listed on the bike with the VIN number. I was hoping someone might now that actual number.

The above formula is from this site:

Found the Downtown's GVWR = 768 lbs.

GVWR: 768 lbs
Scooter Dry Weight: 367
Scooter Wet Weight: (add App. 40 lbs.) 411 lbs.
367 + 40 = 407 (dry weight plus weight of fluids - oil, gas, etc ... )

Available carry capacity: (GVRW - Wet weight) 768 - 411 = 357 lbs.

Rider (me, with the weight of helmet, jacket and boots): 191 lbs
Average passenger (weight of helmet, jacket and boots): 165 lbs

Total: 356 lbs

Additional carrying capacity = 357 - 356 = 1 lbs.

If I've done any math wrong someone correct me. Does this seem off for the Downtown? It seems it can barely support two adult passengers with nothing left for cargo such as a security chain, tool kit, or even a six pack. Given, one can go over the maximum carry capacity, but I'd worry if that figure edges past 50 pounds or more. That will cause distress on the shocks, tires, etc ...

Wt. on rear tire ,  270 lb,s   with me on it at 220 lb,s ,. =  362 lb,s   rear tire capacity 617 lb,s,.  that will leave 255 lb,s for the pile on,   up to tire capacity,.  as the pile on is over the rear tire,.  my rear tire is a city grip,.  front tire capacity is 520 lb,s    power pure, your tires could be a little different,.  my GVW. is 349 KG.  = 769 lb,s

Crossbolt. I found the GVWR rating on the plate on the lower left side of the scooter along/below the driver's running board. The formula is from this site,

http://powersports-blog.denniskirk.com/2331/harley-davidson/how-to-calculate-your-bikes-load-limit/ (http://powersports-blog.denniskirk.com/2331/harley-davidson/how-to-calculate-your-bikes-load-limit/)

De dee, is the information you have the one that's on the sticker placed on the gas cap panel? If so, that makes more sense than my formula

the tire rating is on all tires,   the rest of my ratings are done with my scales,  and I have tools in my top box,.  de dee

No one in the US thinks in metric. Uses, yes, but thinks, not always. Sorry, just never took.

Mid to low 300's is what I found for a whole lot of scooters  and bikes....no matter their engine size.
Adding together the load capacity (printed on the tire wall) of the two tires is not the carrying capacity of a scooter. This figure will be higher than the bike is built to carry.
EVERYONE , however, says factory gives much lower numbers than the bike can actuallydeal with......to avoid law suits.
Still, I go by that sticker by the VIN.
And is one reason why I went up from a Forza to a Burgman.

Thanks de dee and Stig. This is tremendously helpful. Unless I'm going camping I hope to be well under those weight figures.

The GVWR with front/rear axle and tires is listed on the Serial # plaque.
This has been standard for years.

Its located on the centerstand mount for the Downtown.

Subtract the weight of the bike (4xx lbs) from the GVWR 768 lbs.
The 4xx should take into account all fluids and what stuff you have added.

Ie , 768 - 411 = 357 lbs carrying capacity.

That’s two passenger and maybe an overnight bag, or the full content of what’s under my seat. Damn, I may be over with just my security chain if I ride with a passenger.
