Like 200i won't start
« on: December 05, 2015, 09:05:05 PM »
I have two like 200i scooters, they have been sitting for about 4 months and neither one will start.  Both have gas, oil is good, battery is charged and cranks, and the kill switch is in the "on" position.  Any suggestions?  Thanks

Solution is simple.
Its either a fuel problem or an electrical problem, or both.  :D

Flip that Killswitch back and forth a few times for really good contact. Sometimes those contacts corrode. Make sure it really is in the RUN position.
Can you hear the fuelpump running, after key on?
Have you checked both fuses next to the battery? Do you have Headlight and Turn Signal?
CELP Error Code? Nr.?

Take out the sparkplug, does it look healthy deer brown and dry? Hold it against metal and crank over to see if there is a spark. Take care! High voltage!
If not, try with a new one. Can you smell the fuel out of the sparkplug hole while cranking over?

Check also vacuum hoses of petcock for leaks and cracks. Does the petcock open and close properly with or without vacuum? Petcock sticky due to bad fuel quality?
Injector sticky due to bad fuel quality? Min. 95ROZ unleaded fuel?

How old are the scooters?
Fuel brand and quality?
Where have they been sitting? Inside a garage or outside in the wild (rain)?

The Like 200i usually is extremely reliable and normally fires up instantly, even after a long period of sitting.

My wife's Like 200 has/had the same problem. We took it to our dealer because we thought it was the on/off switch (kill switch) causing the no start problem, but it was not. Apparently, there's an issue with the bike's computer that causes this no start problem. To get around the issue, first off, do NOT use the kill switch to shut off your bike. Only use your key to shut it off. Now, this is what you need to do to get it to start.....turn the key to the "On" position and let it sit for about a minute and then try to start it. If it starts, you're good to go. It's not a true fix for the problem, but it is a work around that does actually work. As long as you do not use the kill switch to shut off the bike, you'll be just fine. If you do accidentally use the kill switch to shut if off, you'll have to repeat the procedure. Kymco is aware of the issue, but has not issued a service bulletin for it. Hopefully, this is the problem with your Likes.

Thank you for your suggestion, none of which worked unfortunately.  Taking them to the dealer on wednesday.

Did you check to see if the spark plug cap came loose?

An interesting puzzle here. How much use were they both getting before sitting for four months?
Odds of something coming loose on both scooters ???
Since we're talking two down....should make this easier to sort.
Hard starting....could lead to flooding and a not healthy battery from little use -- then sitting---
= weak kick to the EFi and no start.
Just do not see a parts failure occurring on two scooters or a wiring issue. ..not on two scooters.
Any CELP codes flashing?
Connect a known healthy battery. ..and maybe install a clean dry spark plug. ...and bet it starts.
Or even just a healthy battery. ....and clear their throats with proper starting technique ...♡¿₩¥€↑↑!!
Hope OP gets back to us.

Hi,
Just wanted to update you on my issue.  Turns out that the fuel pump was bad on both scooters.  Pretty unbelievable that both would go bad at the same time but they did.  Covered by the warranty at least.  Lesson learned, don't let the scooters sit for 3 months without starting them.  We are lucky here though, we have access to non ethanol gas here, so we are switching.
Thank you all for your replies.

Check some of Stig's posts: I think he found a Yamaha fuel pump that was exactly the same for less money. Could your trouble be caused by ethanol fuel sitting in tank without Sta-bil?

OK, I'm not able to get my head around two fuel pumps failing on a pair of sitting scooters.....but, alright.
I would have loved to play with those pumps a bit....do some investigating.
With such a huge % of scooters and motorcycles, outboards, skidos, snowmobiles, etc. sitting idle for months at a time - with little or no special attention - and running just fine when the season for use came....?

For instance: there are probably a boat-load of LIKE200i's sitting on dealer floors for many, many months (if not years) with a touch of cheap gas in the tank....yet they fire just fine when the newbie wants to hear it run.
Even the newish NSS300 HONDA FORZA scooters with the bad fuel pumps very, very rarely ever failed in actual use - and almost never on the dealer's floor.
Yet, a pair of LIKE's from the same household pooped their pumps.

OK....the service tech said it was a pair of failed fuel pumps.
As strange as that sounds to me - I gotta beleive it.
Mostly.
Shoot, I love kicking around why a LIKE won't run!

Not surprising. I had a battery go bad in the first year. Went to the dealer and they tested it and sure enough it failed under a load test. In anticipation they charged a new OEM battery. When I returned they showed me the test readout and handed me a new battery. They didn't load test the replacement figuring since it was new it was good. Got home dropped the new battery in and nada. Called the dealer. It was closing time so they said to return the next business day. When I returned to the shop they handed me a Yuasa battery and said they'll deal with Kymco on the warranty replacement with a non OEM battery. 2.5 years later the Yuasa battery is going strong. Sometimes things happen in pairs 🤔

I am very pleased with the dealer. They have been around since the mid 70s. They sell and service BMW motorcycles and various brands of scooters (BMW, Kymco, Piaggo/Vespa, Genuine, Aprilia). I can order any Kymco part I need through them. Not all dealerships are as accommodating to DIYers.

We have 2 2013 Like 200i's and one will not turn over. Thinking it may need a new spark plug. ? Any suggestions on where the spark plug is located and how to change it please?
