Xciting 500 / Xciting 500i Tire(d)
« on: February 19, 2024, 04:42:55 PM »
Couple of days ago a friend of mine stopped by and ask for my opinion about his rear tire.
(pls see pics)
I haven't seen such a run down tire since I was at Middle East many years ago.
This tire was first of all from 2012 and then used up until its carcasse is shown. Interestingly it held air and was not too bad to ride.
This is what one could call economical use of a Michelin City Grip.

Yager GT 200i / YAGER/GRAND DINK 150 fork and waterpump change
« on: November 20, 2023, 08:05:17 PM »
A week ago an other traffic partner thought it would be a good idea to turn left without stopping, taking my right of way, I was going straight and crashed frontal in his side.

Fortunately only material demage, as is:
-front mudguard in shards (took used one, repainted)
-windshield broken
(a new FACO came)
-RH indicator broken
(used one taken)
-fork bent, see comparison old/new in vise
(used one installed, pls see pics)
-front plastic cover broken on several places
(I welded, reinforced and repainted)

As I had the scoot on the bench already, a drop of coolant from this telltale hole said "waterpump service".
(pls see pics)

At this 150cc motor it is NOT neccessary to remove the stator shield! Oil and coolant have to be drained.
Waterpump has its own housing and comes off easily.
-to seperate the pump housing drive a bolt M6x40 into this drain hole, gently pry lid and housing apart
(pls see pics)
-service kit comes with new bearings, o-ring, spring coil and new , also ceramic, gasket/s.
-white, ringshaped part is this ceramic gasket
-waterpump wheel has LEFTHAND TREAD!!

WARNING: this waterpump repair requires special tools like, several sizes of longneck bearing extractors of internal type. Without those it is impossible to rebuilt this waterpump because bearings and impeller potty are clued in.

My opponent was reasonable and payed without lamenting for parts and labour.
All in all, if I wouldn't have done this repair on my own, the scoot would be totaled. Spare parts (new) and labour would be double the  scoots value.

General Discussion / MALAGUTI Centro 160ie, Made in Italia
« on: September 27, 2023, 08:56:08 PM »
Dear scooteristi, this I have to share with you. As the header says, this will cover a piece italian made means of transport, called MALAGUTI Centro 160ie (160cc/ fuel injection from PIAGGIO).

A friends friend of mine called in, "my trusted scoot does not charge its battery anymore".

Since it was a nice sunny day here in northern Italy, I took some "first aid" equipment and went there.
On further inquiry (no excessive force used on my friend) he admitted that, all of a sudden smoke appeared from GUTIS bowels and then silenzio on all electric.

Okay, underbelly out, multimeter at charge, (pls see pic cables)
it was clear. Those three AC cables from alternator where patched once and gave up their soul in smoke.....
Remedy: new connector, etc...

Well, this was not all which was hidden at GUTI.
He also mentioned a minuscule working rear brake, which was in his opinion not that significant. Front brake still worked anyway.

I saw a patch of silicon glue, where usually this small roundish brake fluid window sits ???
Asked about this silicon patch, he told me that:

"...this little round window had dissapeared somewhen during last half a year and he thought it would be good to cover this hole with silicone glue..."
It might surprise that without brake fluid, brakes don't work as efficient as they supposed to.
Had a good laugh. (pls see pics silicone/ LH  brake)

So it seems that two independant brake systems/circles might be a little bit of overkill done by Piaggios developement engineers..😉

Xciting 500 / Xciting 500i homeless, taken care
« on: August 10, 2023, 08:41:07 PM »
Dear scooteristi, you might understand seeing a KYMCO 500i hanging around, with sad headlights watching for a new home, appealed to my god heart and took her home.

An aquaintance of mine called in and ask what to do, this scooter seems to eat batteries like me burgers.
Needed only this year three of them. After a short check it came to a rotten regulator/ rectifier, which cooked them up.

Guys didn't come to the idea to measure incoming voltage. When I checked, battery had incoming 17.6 volts and 65°C, pretty hot to my hands.

Well, to shorten the story, it's in my workshop right now and waits for a new reg/rec.
For reasoning I took it for an acceptable price.
MJ 2008, 18000 kms, one owner, showroom condition, new tyres, brakes and shiny.

First modification : LED headlight and running lights.
Second mod: Topcase mounted

Edit: reg/rect. arrived for €28,-  works great
..installed a voltmeter too for further control and less surprise..
..bought a new belt €150,- pretty expensive MITSUBOSHI
..waiting for Dr.Pulleys gliders 29x22 x 30 gr (want quiet cruising) to change at once..

General Discussion / Tastes are different. YAMAHA NIKEN
« on: December 30, 2021, 02:08:57 PM »
Saw today a very "disdinguished" bike on sale
-4 front dampers
-2 forks
-2 front wheels
-850 ccm
-liquid cooled
The only advantage I would see here is, you don't need a main stand.
Sells for € 17.000,- +tx, etc

Technical | How To / Oil check is IMMINENT, especially on one cylinders
« on: November 21, 2021, 05:57:14 PM »
Followed more than two month now advertisements/sale offers here in Italy for scoots like Grand Dink/Yager 200i/Grand Dink 250 for spareparts.

Eight out of ten sellers I contacted, told me the cause of breakdown was forgotten oil change or simply no oil at all. "My son/daughter/spouse did not care",  etc.

So it makes, considering those high revvs in our scoots, even more sense to change according to schedule/more often, or at least once a year if km/ mls not approached.

I know this is a delicate subject, each owner knows better what's the best for his/her ride, but it's worth to consider.

Yager GT 200i / Yager/Dink 200i hot stuff/ regulator connector
« on: November 15, 2021, 02:11:43 PM »
My Yager/Dink 200i, which gets anyway a lot of care, was asking for more.
For a couple of days I suspected my scoot not to deliver what's supposed to, a proper voltage into its battery (new LiFePo4- 9amp).

The generator delivered on all three yellow/now brownish cables at 4000 rpm, about 55VAC, evenly on all of them, measured 1-2, 2-3, 3-1.
So the stator seems to be healthy.

Only suspect now was my rectifier/ regulator. Upon measuring it showed normal 14+VDC feeding into battery.
Nothing irregular IMO, until I touched this 3pole connector between stator and regulator, burning hot.
Opened it, and saw the cause.
(pls see pics)

-one cable within this plug had due to overheating "friendly fire" with its neighbour, melted through its separation and caused this intermitting failure

-since this plug would be on order, I decided to do the "direct" solution to solve this prob

-some layers of shrink-tube to avoid fireworks do the trick

-DC voltage at battery, without lights, lights on and at dashboard with brakelights

Its a common fault on cycles and cars, as many owners complain. For there are from 50-100VAC running throught this undersized plug, vibrations loosen those little prongs and firework starts.
This cables AND regulator are getting pretty warm without sparking too, so its worth to help to keep it "firefree".

Technical | How To / Oil drain plugs upgrade 2
« on: November 12, 2021, 02:16:59 PM »
Some more pics...
...interesting that, our GEAR oil drain and fill plugs are standard 8mm threads with only a 12 mm head.

I'M TALKING HERE ABOUT MODELS  LIKE, GRAND DINK AND YAGER.

So, in case of a loss you can use any, watch lenght, standard M8 bolt with a 13mm head from your hardware store (pls see pic to compare).

MOTOR oil drain plug is a different story.
It's a M12 pitch 1,5 thread with a
17 mm head, so a standard M12 bolt CANNOT be used.

Technical | How To / Oil drain plugs upgrade
« on: November 12, 2021, 02:07:56 PM »
Seeing small round magnets for little money made me think. After trying them on a metal board, I decided to give them a chance to improve my scooters oil purification.

Said that, went in the workshop and tried to catch small iron shavings only with those magnets popped on my spare oil plugs.  It worked (pls see pics).
Next step was to put plugs into my ancient lathe.

(btw: this lathe was bought 1908 by my great-grandfather and survived several economical crises and two WWs more than onehundred  years in my family)(for more precise lathework I use a friends CNC lathe).

Predrill, final drill with a 8mm flat drill...
Ready to put magnets into their place. And yes, they collect small specks of iron.
On the motoroil plug I secured the magnet with some punches. If they really, due to de-magnetising from heat, leave their place, nothing can happen.

For this reason I chose the outer side of my plugs.
How they work in situ, next oilchanges will show.

Yager GT 200i / Yager/Dink 200i a pack of wolves/clutch overhaul
« on: November 07, 2021, 08:31:01 PM »
Dear fellow Yagers,
today, riding home from our Marina I thought a pack of wolves is after me. Turned around, couldn't see any, only this howling was there.
Since we do not have that many lupi running around in freedom, thought : "Could be one of my clutch bearings, because my Yagers gear is brandnew".

Ok, at home up on the scoot-lift, usual ceremony, CVT-belt-clutch, takes about 10 minutes already, off.
Well, what to say, the smaller of those two  bearings within our clutch, was rough and therefore the howler.

Dissasambling:
-39mm nut off in a vise
-tin sleeve which covers the slide-pins, off
(it's kept only by friction of two O-rings
-taking belt carrier apart (watch 3 pins)
-extract the bigger (outer) bearing from seat
-apply a long circlip plier on this circlip which holds the roller bearing in place, it's appr. 5cm deep down, you really need long pliers
-push the closed roller bearing out with a socket

Material needed:
- 1 pc bearing 6902 LU
- 1 pc needle bearing 20x29x18 PXI
- 1 pc oilseal 34-41-4
- 2 pc O-ring 40x1,5
- bearing grease

One thing was strange to.me: This small bearing had only on one side a red cover, which is unusual. Either both sides or none. Have to check in my part shop whether that's possible, because I did not find it's second red cover within the housing.

Tomorrow I will get spares and put it together again.

Yager GT 200i / Yager/Dink 200i inner mudguard
« on: October 28, 2021, 10:17:26 AM »
Dear KYMCO addicts,
upon serious research found out that, usually on our Yagers a inner mudguard between rear shocks is located at.
But on mine its missing. (pls see pic)
Other forums, particular in countries with saltet roads during winters time, are seeing a severe detoriation/destruction of their fuses/resp. those cables leading to and fro.
Remedy for this evil should be the mounting of mentioned inner mudguard and lathering the whole fuse box and cables with water resistant grease.
The only obstacle is, this part is not listed in any part catalogue I looked into.
Found two part numbers for this mudguard but can't confirm.
MA2967
80100 LEA5 E000
Appreciate any hint.

Eye Candy | Videos and Pics / Had a day off, went to PALMANOVA
« on: October 23, 2021, 07:37:42 PM »
PALMANOVA, as already mentioned, built as a fortress city and a bulwark in insecure medieval times.
Restructured by Napoleon Bonaparte in eighteenth century, close to my home, is always worth a trip and nice "Cafè Macciato".
A beautiful cathedral dominates the centered parade ground, where several replicas of ancient construction machines are to be seen. (pls see pics)

The whole city is surrounded by several mounds and a moat, which could be dammed up to a water level of about five meters to repel advancing enemies.

Additionally were lots of tunnels, from which some were "contromine", means to lure the enemy into, whereupon this tunnel was partially blown up on them.
A national monument, worth to be checked out.
