Roadcraft / Extremely minor car collision
« on: May 11, 2017, 09:58:20 PM »
I've had my first extremely minor collision with a car today.
As I was approaching a T intersection, another car did a sloppy sort of turn towards me, into my lane. I pull over to the side as much as  I can, expecting him to go into his own lane any second. But he's in no hurry to.

Strangely, many of the details of what happened escape me. I remember not being sure if he would clear me or not, until  he hit my mirror (is what I think happened). Somehow I drove into the curb. Some time later it occurred that I have no idea whatsoever if the bike fell over, or if I was just worried it would.

No scratches on the bike that are clearly from hitting anything that i can tell though, except for some tiny black marks on the mirror. In fact, the only clear sign that anything happened is the mirror was a tiny bit out of adjustment. I came out uninjured as well. So all in all a pretty good collision.

And so ends my non-story.

General Discussion / Dupont dry chain lubricant on variator?
« on: May 07, 2017, 05:40:52 PM »
I've been considering using Dupont's chain lubricant on my variator (carefully avoiding the belt surfaces) to help the sliders slide better: http://www.performancelubricantsusa.com/product/chain-saver-lubricant.php

It's dry, meant to repel dirt, and good for temperatures up to 300 degrees F.

Previously I thought I might try paste wax, until I realized that it'd probably just melt.

Any thoughts?

General Discussion / Scratch resistant helmet?
« on: March 21, 2017, 09:01:48 PM »
My experience with helmets is that the visor always quickly ends up covered in tiny scratches. The one I have now is a Scorpion brand helmet that I tried hard to baby (soaking the visor before cleaning it and such), to no avail.

In researching eye glasses, I came across information suggesting that a couple of the coatings out there are harder than glass. So in theory it should be possible to have a scratch resistant visor.

Are there any?

Roadcraft / Riding in the snow/winter?
« on: October 21, 2016, 12:45:34 AM »
There's another thread that touched on this some, but it's off topic and I don't want to hijack it any further.

Many years ago when I got my first scooter (a 125cc Yamaha), I intended to take it out in the snow in New England. I did this already with my bicycle all the time, and my internet research suggested it was fine if you were careful.

The very first time I hit a  smallish patch of snow (the roads were mostly plowed), I immediately lost traction and low sided.

After that, my approach was to wait out the snowy portions of the winter until there was no chance of snow or ice. Thankfully now where I live it doesn't snow.

Still, I'm curious as to what everyone else's approach to riding in the winter is.

People 250 / Need to replace/repair the exhaust on my People 250.
« on: August 21, 2016, 01:36:01 AM »
What started as a small hairline crack in the pipe (at the very end of the muffler weld, where one of the emission testing holes used to be) suddenly expanded all around it. So now I have an exhaust leak.

It's probably a result of needing to put the exhaust under tension to make the bolt holes line up.

There's a bit of rust and a blob of bronze that filling the fallen off emissions testing port, so I'm not sure if that would interfere with any prospect of welding?

There's a beautiful but expensive aftermarket exhaust:
http://www.partsforscooters.com/190-31-Kymco-People-250-Muffler
But I'm suspicious about the way it seems to want to mount. The best I can figure,  it would hang from those straps from the one top bolt hole on the rear fork. I have my doubts whether that would hold up in the long term. Any thoughts?

Another option would be to try to build a custom exhaust. I think I would mostly need some sort of welder and pipe bender. And I think the mounting hardware looks like it's some kind of stainless rod welded together? It'd probably come out to at least the same amount of money, but at least I'd have a new skill and equipment in case I needed to repair it again.

Thoughts/advice?

Roadcraft / Creek crossing
« on: July 29, 2016, 06:33:24 PM »

I'm making plans that involve crossing that.

Any advice? Even after watching three motorcycle make it through fine, the prospect still seems alarming.

I have a People 250.

People 250 / Peak final charge heavy duty coolant?
« on: June 15, 2016, 06:23:26 PM »
Is the suitable for use it scooters?

http://www.peakhd.com/product-lines/final-charge/faq/

They say it's silicate and phosphate free. And I think I read somewhere that it's also 2-eh free. Is there any reason I shouldn't use it, aside from the truck picture on the bottle?

People 250 / Proper HID or LED headlamp
« on: February 24, 2016, 12:44:21 AM »
Does anyone know of a proper way to install a HID or LED headlamp that wouldn't increase glare?

How much current can you pass through the 12v outlet under the seat?

I'm buying a 65 watt laptop charger for a single car trip, and I was wondering if there was some way I could use it on my People 250 as well.

People 250 / Electrical problem
« on: August 09, 2015, 09:47:20 PM »
The other day, after driving for about 30 miles, I stopped my scooter for a few minutes. When I pressed the button to start it again, it seemed to lose power completely (no power to any lights, dials). Then a few minutes later, mysteriously, the power came back and it started fine.

I have noticed that once in a while the starter motor will sound like it's struggling at first.

Any ideas?

People 250 / Are heavier sliders equivalent to lighter rollers?
« on: April 06, 2015, 03:48:51 AM »
I'm planning on switching to sliders, but I like the balance of the stock People 250. I've seen some people say that to get the equivalent performance when switching from rollers to sliders, that you should increase the weight by about 10%.

Can anybody corroborate this?

People 250 / Strange clock problems
« on: April 01, 2015, 02:33:08 AM »
My clock has been behaving strangely for some time. Once in a while it'll work fine. Sometimes it'll be very dim. Often it'll be flashing different parts of the numbers, at different rates. Sometimes completely blank.

Thoughts?

People 250 / How often do you change the oil with synthetic?
« on: March 09, 2015, 04:31:28 PM »
The manual recommends changing the oil every 2000km, nearly twice what I did with my last scooter (every 2000 miles). Do I need to be changing it so often with synthetic oil?

People 250 / What kind of socket for tightening steering head bearing?
« on: March 09, 2015, 04:22:05 PM »
The handlebars shake when I let go of them, or sometimes if I just decelerate from about 50mph. What I've read says this could be loose steering head bearings.

Is it necessary to have Kymco's special socket for tightening the lock nut? Would a normal, but very deep socket work? And if so, what size?

In the parts finder for the People 250, I'm only seeing brake caliper seals listed in the Front Wheel section. Does anyone know if the seals are the same for the front and back?

Also, the first time I removed the underseat storage box, I ripped some sort of splash guard that was screwed into the bottom. I never replaced it though, because I cannot find the part number anywhere or anything to suggests that it exists. Does anybody know how to find it?
