UXV 450 Oil Recommendations
« on: April 19, 2019, 06:15:33 PM »
Well guys, I just rolled past 90 miles on the new UXV 450i last evening. So, that means the first oil change is just around the corner. As most of you know, the owner's manual specifies 5w30 but also seems to allow for a wide variety of engine oil depending on the temperature range. Just wondering what everyone else is using and how you like it. Any strong opinions between a 5w30 and a 10w30?

I was considering either a Honda GN4 or Yamalube. Both seem to get good reviews, and I notice plenty of folks who are running these oils in other makes - Suzukis, Kawasakis, etc.

Thanks!

While voth are good oils you are paying extra for the name. Stay with an oil designed for wet clutches, as there is one inside the engine. Many use the Rotella oils, dino for breakin and then switch to full synthetic after 300 or so miles. Remember yamaha and honda do not make there oils, they just put there name on it. .and add to the cost.

Thanks. What about the grade? You see much difference between 5w or 10w?

When you switch over to full synthetic, oil weight means little because syn oil is thinner to begin with but does not thin out under high heat. Dino oil starts thicker because it does thin out under heat.  For your breakin period before switcil changeilhing to syn either wt will be fine. If we were going to have more sub freezing cold the 5wt might be better and if temps are staying above 50 then the 10wt might be slightly better....but in all honesty just go with a good quality oil in the weight called for in the manual.  Using a good quality oil filter changed at every  oilchange even more important

Thanks. I believe in an earlier post someone suggested using Dino oil for the first change and then switching to synthetic. But assuming the cost difference is negligible, any reason not to use full synthetic from the get go?

Also, regarding the diff fluid, I was reading that 75w90 will cool down more quickly than 75w140 because it flows more quickly. Also that the heavier oil results in slight power loss due to the increased resistance. Many seem to feel 75w90 is just fine or even preferable unless you are doing a lot of towing or extreme driving. Thoughts on this?
