Downtown 300 / Re: Hit 40,000
« on: June 08, 2016, 12:31:44 AM »
Today's Mileage is approximately 42,200 miles and she broke down again. I was traveling around 70 MPH, the next thing I feel the scooter going into neutral and my speed decreasing.  I safely pulled over to the side of the road, tried to increase my speed and nothing happened.  I shut her off, then turned it on and still nothing happen.  I had it towed to Moxie Scooters.  I should know tomorrow as to what happened.  My wife suggested that it might be time to get a new scooter.

The symptoms you describe sound exactly like drive belt failure.
If the engine starts but when you rev the engine to pull away if the engine rpm increases and the scooter goes nowhere, chances are the drive belt has been shredded.
Hopefully there's no other damage to the transmission.

General Discussion / Re: Scooter VS Motorcycle prices

Better to just ride what you like and like what you ride.

Amen to that.
Some of the best fun I ever had was riding an MZ TS150 which I got used for roughly the same price as the cost of a weeks groceries.
It wasn't in good nick and it wasn't pretty, but my neighbour also had one and we had an absolute hoot riding them together.

I noticed that motorcycles, per cc, tend to be more affordable than scooters. Is true? If so, why is that?

A motorcycle is an inferior machine to a scooter.
It generally has less bodywork, zero onboard storage and requires far more maintenance.
(think drive chain and general cleaning)
Even though a similar cc bike may be cheaper, I firmly believe you get more for your money and a more practical means of transport in a scooter.

Taking an example, Kawasaki Z300 vs J300
UK cost £4349 for the bike £4399 for the scooter.
The extra £50 for the scooter gets you full bodywork, twin headlamps, a big underseat luggage box, maintenance free final drive, better fuel consumption, easier to use transmission, lower maintenance costs, comfier seat, the list goes on and on....
That's a hell of a lot for the extra £50 imo.

Well I'll be darned.....
D'nut is in the Royal Mail..... (if this is the Forza owner I think it is?)....
Stig

Yes, its me.
How about I pop down the local shops get me a donut and send you a PayPal invoice?
Just say no.
More donuts is the last thing I'm needing!

Am currently considering replacement options and popped in here to see if there was any new info/stories about the Xciting 400.
This has only been offered in black in the UK till now, but I am informed by a representative of the importer that white will become available soon.

Kymco News / Re: All black bike and gear

I wouldn't buy a dark coloured scooter, I insist on ABS and always wear a white helmet.
The harley which went down probably did so due to a locked wheel(s).

I see 100,000 DTs sold since mid-2009 .

Where did you get that figure from?

The Forza is an also ran in the 300 class.

Also-ran my arse
After the mid August launch in the UK, Honda sold more Forzas in six weeks of Q3 than Kymco have sold Downtowns in four years.

All manufacturers have glitches along the way, I remember early Downtowns had dodgy rear brakes for example.

The SYM will  destroy the underpowered Like.

Unlikely when both have a very similar power output.

What if I want to lock the rear wheel up to slide?

Get a bicycle.

41
Regarding your absurd gun culture, never say never.
Whoulda thunk black people could one day ride the front of the bus?

ABS does what it says, it stops wheels from locking and this is of benefit to the owners of vehicles and people who may be affected by vehicle collisions.
i.e. just about everyone.

42

ABS should be mandatory on all road vehicles.

Give me one reason skilled riders should suffer at the expense of novices? I would never want to be forced to but a bike with more expensive features that hinder the way the bike responds to my gentle touch!

ABS does not hinder the skilled rider nor does it make him suffer.
It might stop the skilled rider having a crash though.
At which point it more than pays for itself.

43

BTW

I was not wrong.

"Sudden over-application of the brakes, or braking on low-grip surfaces (surfaces with a low coefficient of friction) such as wet asphalt or manhole covers may cause a motorcycle’s wheel(s) to lock up and slip. ABS was developed to prevent such incidents. Kawasaki ABS systems are controlled by high precision and highly reliable programming formulated based on thorough testing of numerous riding situations. By ensuring stable braking performance, they offer rider reassurance that contributes to greater riding enjoyment.

And to meet the special requirements of certain riders, specialised ABS systems are also available. For example, KIBS (Kawasaki Intelligent anti-lock Brake System) is a high-precision brake system designed specifically for supersport models, enabling sport riding to be enjoyed by a wider range of riders. And by linking the front and rear brakes, K-ACT (Kawasaki Advanced Coactive-braking Technology) ABS provides the confidence to enjoy touring on heavyweight models. Kawasaki is continually working on the development of other advanced ABS systems" -Top Speed .com

Directly from the J300 review

If you mean this revew you have misinterpreted it.
The paragraph you quote is a generalised explanation of ABS, it is not a description of what is optional on the J300.
If you look further up the review under the title "ABS Available" you will see that "ABS control comes care of a lightweight Bosch unit."

ABS should be mandatory on all road vehicles.

44
Well according to the review I just read the Kawi has like 3 ABS options

Nope, there is a single type of ABS offered, front and rear brakes are independent and not linked.
Its probably the same Bosch kit fitted to the Downtown.

45
Most likely a more aggressive Ign. timing curve, and a re-mapping of the injection. My guess is more throttle response, and perhaps a few more HP over the Kymco set up.

Just guessing here...

Kawasaki has more torque, slightly less peak power, better midrange.
Feels sportier apparently.
UK prices:
Kawasaki J300 ABS £4399
Kymco Downtown ABS £4199
