Title: Help with Engine Code/Year
Post by: skmillertime on July 02, 2019, 02:11:42 PM
I need help trying to determine the year of an ATV I bought cheap to fix up (not running).  It is a Mongoose 250cc ATV (I thought a 2008 at time of purchase).  It has an Engine Code: LA50 and engine SN: *2402309*.  The VIN is nowhere to be found.  It does have an Off-Road Permit that expired mid 2006, so I believe it may be a 2004, 2005, or 2006 ATV.  I have the permit issuer trying to find a VIN but the records are old.  It still has some of the body stickers that say Mongoose so I believe that part is correct.

Just a thought: You may have some luck contacting your nearest KYMCO dealer for help in determining the model year of your machine. Good luck!

Unfortunately, I tried a couple of dealers/Parts suppliers.  One guy just laughed and said he couldn't help me.  My next step is to start looking at the wiring diagrams to see what (if anything) changed between years.

The VIN will tell the year, the 10th digit.
The VIN has to be on the ATV, check on the frame between the wheels in front where a winch would mount in a MXU. Or, in back of the wheels on one of the frame rails. It has to be there. Almost impossible to determine the year from the engine number
