Title: well shoot - city grip II is a no-go
Post by: Stig / Major Tom on March 29, 2023, 05:45:27 PM
tried to make a dealer appointment to have a City Grip II installed on my LIKE200i - I am required to buy the tire thru the dealer.
No problem - however the parts dept said this tire, the rear, is back-ordered. Might be avail end of April or maybe May.

I'm looking at amazon - I can have the tire in hand in @ 3-4 days.

Called other motorcycle dealers - they will not touch a 12" rim.

dammmmit - I think I'm going to be doing it myself!
Worst case scenario - I get the rear wheel off and new tire in hand and go to the big Honda 'Powerhouse' dealer (25 miles) for the tire mounting. $65.00

never as simple as ......!

It is amazing how little $ in takes to own one of these scooters.

I wanted a CG2 for my ADV150 but had the same problem.  I ended up getting a Shinko for $59 + around $35 to get it mounted.  I have no idea how long it will last but I rarely have a rear tire last for even 2 years.  The OEM tire was only good for around 7 months.

Well, the CG II is on the way - early next week.
also checked my spares drawer - I have 2 new exhaust gaskets....and some fresh hardware. So should be good for the wheel removal.

CG2 is a good choice, but sorry for the hassle Stig. As you say, at least it’s not a frequent occurrence!

Actually, this is a frequent occurrence.  Due to supply chain issues a lot of tires have been hard to find.  I have heard from many people that the CG2 was on back order.  A lot of Vespa riders had trouble finding 12" CG2's.  I had to wait a couple of months for a Dunlop 605 for my KLX250.  Luckily I ordered it months before I would need it because I knew there were all kinds of tire shortages.  Last time I needed tires for my Majesty I couldn't get the tires I wanted because they were out of stock.

My last 13" CG2 fitted to the X-Town was £95 ($117.50) all in and balanced.

I think I paid about $120 for both front & rr City Grips from Revzilla back in 2013.
@ $130 to have them put on the scooter.

The dirty little secret of 2 wheelin’…scooter and motorcycle tires cost multiple times more per mile traveled than car tires. The price we pay for fun.

My concern is damaging the new tire.

Stig

I just did my own tires for the second time. Only thing that I did different is I bought rim shields, they saved the custom paint job on my rims when I marred the crap out of them when I was a newbie, the cheap rubber tire rim protectors that came with the spoons disintegrated. Another trick I learned really helped ease the installment process. I ended up warming the tire before mounting it on the rim. I preheated the oven for 350 and then turned it off, waited about ten minutes for the element to turn off and then threw the tire in for fifteen minutes. You could also leave it in the sun but right now we are in the rainy season so it is cloudy for the majority of the day.

I also used a new product that I never knew existed. Balancing beads. I put 2 ounces of beads in each tire through the valve stem with a small hose and a tiny amount of compressed air

A hair dryer would work as well.  But if you're a bachelor there likely isn't one in the house.

You might try Walmart auto center if you have one.  The one in my area will mount most anything 10-15 bucks each. They have done my boat trailer tires, atv tires, anything I can carry in. I do always watch from a viewing area as there have been a couple they tried to mount backwards.....

Thanks for the idea I will give them a call. I did call two tire stores I thought maybe ....anyway they said no they don't do anything that small. I know there's a shop that does the lawn power equipment I might give them a call but I will call Walmart tomorrow and see what they say thank you for the suggestion.

I work for walmart tire and Auto center. The machines that we have are not equipped to handle motorcycles or ATV tires. Of course that is just my store, you would have to call around.

Batchelor here :) I have a hairdryer. I tried it but it took forever to heat up the tire so I switched to the oven method that I discussed further in the thread.

screw the hair drier, go with a heat gun https://www.lowes.com/pd/CRAFTSMAN-5100-BTU-Heat-Gun/1000896128 (https://www.lowes.com/pd/CRAFTSMAN-5100-BTU-Heat-Gun/1000896128)

Good suggestion, randyo.  Will be needing to put on 5 tires this year, so worth getting (although I bought a less expensive one).

I put a City Grip 2 on the rear of my 500 late last year. It's nearing 2000 miles & still looks like a new tire. I'm pretty impressed.
