Title: OMG!!! Variator exploded, WTF?!?!
Post by: leo.portner on May 31, 2015, 02:49:26 PM
Last night on my way home i get out of a turn and suddenly a loud bang and then some grinding noise group the Var area.
Lucky i was 100 yards from home so i pushed it the rest of the way,
This morning opened up the variator cover and first thing i see is 3 rollers crushed and out of their housing...
I open up the var and here is what i discovered:
1) the roller plate had split into 2 parts, sending 3 rollers flying in var cover
2) the flying rollers got crushed and couldn't be used again.
3) the broken piece of the plate that wasn't connected to the shaft created deep scratches in the roller housing parter the belt slips up and down and deep scratches in the fan (outer part off the belt) both parts couldn't be used again.

Ended up getting a 2nd roller plate roller housing and outer fan plate with new original kymco rollers and sliders
All together 100$ did the work my self so no labor expenses
Hope it dosnt happen again

Never heard/read such thing. At least it was close to you home and not in a freeway somewhere.
Did you ever worked on the variator? Moddified? Rollers where oem?
Good thing to change the whole setup and give a good check on the belt. I mught change it just in case it got damaged and yet not broken

U might had miss tighten the variator? Or missed splines???
I find that as a rezonable explanation for your issue.

did you modify your ramp in the variator,  and how much did you take off,     what split the variator, or the ramp plate, or the outer pulley face,     de dee

I once messed up the crank thread by miss-aligning the nut, and then tightening it with a hydraulic power tool. I was always worried that the nut would fly off.
The crank has since been replaced for other reasons, so no longer a concern.
