General Discussion / Scooter stolen. Good bye Kymco?
« on: August 24, 2017, 01:46:15 AM »
Hi folks,

I have been with this forum for quite a while now and must say that it is a great place for all Kymco owners and those who want to become one.
But my time here might be coming to an end/interruption. Reason: My People GT 300i got stolen two weeks ago downtown Boston.

Anger and financial loss aside, I am now in desperate need of a new ride. What to get next?
There are not a lot of options in the larger displacement category out there.

Another People 300? While fun when riding fast, it always felt chunky when going slow in traffic or pushing it on the lawn, sidewalk etc. Also, the jerky clutch issue was driving me nuts (didn't have time to take care of it).
Biggest thing though is that I feel that there is bad luck on this model now. I don't want the thieves to chuckle because there's a second chance for the same sweet ride.

A SYM HD 200? I rode it and it was great, but it has some issues that are far worse than a jerky clutch. And 170cc is a bit meh on the highway.

A Genuine Blur 220i? I never rode it, but it doesn't seem to have major flaws. At 220cc it should be lighter weight that the People, yet fast enough for a little highway ride @70. Any experience anyone?

Last but not least: Piaggio Beverly 350. Yes, it is even a few pounds more than the Kymco. But shorter. And faster. And it looks sooo good! And if I can believe the reviews it's a blast to ride.

What do you think?

Ah yes, here's my stolen People 300i. If someone comes across a suspicious listing, I'd appreciate a note:
2014 Kymco People GT 300i
Color: Black
Odometer: 3,300 +
Stolen: August 8, 2017 Leather District Boston
VIN: RFBBFM299EB160550
It looked almost new, but there where some Velcro stickers above the headlight area to protect the body from windshield damage (windshield was off). Maybe they leave markings when taken off. On the rear fender under the number plate there where also four round Velcro stickers.

The one cool thing I am getting out of this theft is that I have seen the Odo of my "grandpa" 2008 Agility 125 passing the 30,000 mark...

Technical | How To / Agility Cylinder head removal
« on: October 02, 2016, 03:40:24 AM »
Hi,

My scoot (2009 Agility 125)  is having low compression and the issue points to the valves.
The scooter still runs fine, but is missing the 'oomph' that it used to have.
Unfortunately it seems impossible to just buy valve stems and seals, so I want to try my luck with doing some valve grinding.

Aside from welcoming general input I am having the issue that I cannot seem to remove that screw on the cam chain tensioner. It is now resting, soaked in pb blast, but in case that doesn't help - do I even need to touch that thing in order to remove the camshaft etc?

For the valve grinding I was planning to do something like this guy here: but without gluing anything to the valves.

Thanks,
E.

Agility 125 / Looking for valves on kyps.kymco.com
« on: September 22, 2016, 04:32:10 PM »
Hi,

I need to replace the valves and valve seals, but Kymco Parts Monster says they're not available anymore. Kymco Parts Online also doesn't have them.
So I am checking out the Kymco parts site http://kyps.kymco.com, which is a very 'weird' place.
First, my scoot is a 2009 Agility, but they only list (literally) 2006~, 2008~, 2013~. Not idea what the tilde means.
Second, after choosing any of the years/model (btw, choosing 2008~ gives me model 'KN25SG(US)') and finding the part, I can only add it to a wish list!!

Does anyone here know what I should choose, or even if this is an e-commerce site at all? Did anyone order from this site?

Cheers,
Emil

Technical | How To / Agility 125 low power & burning oil
« on: January 04, 2016, 03:30:46 AM »
Hi there,

My 2009 Agility 125 with about 28k km started burning oil maybe 2k km ago and recently also started loosing power.
I have replaced the belt and roller weights, inspected clutch etc. and everything looks good.
Discovered only a few weeks ago that the exhaust is smoking a bit.
The engine seems to be running a bit rough and acceleration up to about 40/45 mph is quiet lousy. After that it doesn't feel much different from before, but there are very few stretches where I can go that fast anyway.

Can someone give me an idea where and how I should start testing?
My knowledge and equipment is limited. The most advanced stuff I did so far is putting in an NCY variator transmission set and changing the brakes - so please be patient. But I am willing to learn. Mostly of course because I don't want to spend a lot of money :)

Thanks and happy new year,
Emil

Agility 125 / Gel Battery for 2009 Agility 125
« on: September 01, 2015, 08:36:24 PM »
Hi There,

I am in need of a new battery and thought of buying a Gel one.
Found this here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mighty-Max-12V-6AH-GEL-Battery-for-Kymco-125-Agility-125-2010-2012-/191637979430?hash=item2c9e838126, but it says that it's only good for 2010-2012 models.
Can anyone confirm? I thought there was no model change between 2009 and 2010.
It is a bit larger though than this battery here: http://www.monsterscooterparts.com/12v-ut5l-bs-yt5l-bs-agm-scooter-battery.html

Other suggestions are also welcome.
My goals are simple:
  • scooter has to start after standing for a week or two in the cold (-5 - 15F)
  • no messing with acid, electrolytes etc.
  • about $40 max

Thanks for looking,
Emil

General Discussion / Freezing Winter Weather Gloves recommendations
« on: October 31, 2011, 11:55:38 PM »
Hi,

There are some winter clothing threads here already but in my experience most of the cold can be come by rather easy with layers, thick socks and rain pants. But when it comes to gloves there is not much that can be done unless the gloves are really good.
So my question is, are there any all year commuters here that found good gloves, the kind that are still ok for a one hour commute at 15F (-10C)? I have found the Held Freezer gloves that seem to be pretty good but at $170 I am turning slightly pale...
Is anyone here using more affordable gloves on the coldest days?

Agility 125 / NCY Super Transmission Set
« on: October 26, 2011, 01:16:05 AM »
My scooter has become a little slow recently and i found this kit for a good price:
http://www.scooterworks.com/NCY-Super-Transmission-Set-Genuine-GY6-P6692C532.aspx
Did anyone here try this out, any tips? I am just curious before I lay my hands on it this weekend.
Along with it new front shocks, finally - my wrists hurt - and a new rear tire...

Agility 125 / Aftermarket Forks
« on: September 01, 2011, 03:20:37 PM »
My forks/front-shocks have gone bad. I would love to replace the seals and springs, but there are no parts available. Only the entire forks at about $85 each plus shipping.

Since I think they never performed well and I don't want to replace them again in two years I was wondering if anybody here has aftermarket forks installed or heard of good ones that fit the Agility125.

jiangwayne actually mailed me that they have nice ones for something like $350, but I really don't want to spend so much.
Any suggestions anyone?

Agility 125 / Front Shocks/Forks need to be replaced?
« on: July 26, 2011, 07:43:53 PM »
Not very lucky with my scooter lately - first I hear a funny noise and it's the big bolt that holds the muffler that was broken. Well, at least a trip to Ace Hardware got that fixed. Then I hear a funny noise and shortly after my rear fender comes off and gets stuck between the frame and the tire while riding 50mph. That was an interesting night (and pricey too). Soon after another funny noise. Didn't ride the bike for a week only to find out that it was the missing rubber piece from the center stand.

This time no funny noise. But my forks are pretty much useless (damn those horrible roads in Boston). The forks always kind of get stuck and I think the springs are gone. I would say that in the meanwhile the forks are compressed all the way down 90% of the time. Ouch my wrists. There must also be something funky going on with the seals, although I haven't recognized any leaks.

So my main trouble now is that there don't seem to be any replacement parts for the forks and I don't want to buy the complete OEM ones that are something like $85 each (and will likely only hold for another two years).
Did anybody here work on the forks? Are there any non OEM replacement parts anywhere or does anyone know of better quality aftermarket forks that are not super expensive? I asked Jianwayne and they have forks for $390 plus shipping!! That's almost a quarter of what I paid for the new scooter. It's devastating.

Any advice?

Thanks,
Emil

General Discussion / About the warranty
« on: September 01, 2010, 10:21:31 PM »
Hello,

I just wanted to share this with you.
About a month ago I contacted Kymco and asked them if their warranty would cover my squeaking front brake. Thought I would ask them directly because I don't really trust my dealer. And this was the answer:

Generally this type issue is not covered under the warranty program. It is normally caused by excessive heat buildup in the brakes from improper usage like holding the brakes while riding or other harsh usage.

So they right away accused me of abusing the scooter. And I mean, which idiot holds the brake while riding?
Then I wrote again, basically telling them that I did not abuse the scooter (assuming that using the brakes is not abuse) and received this answer:

You may have your unit checked, and we will gladly consider more details if they can be given by the dealer. However, keep in mind that this repair is not likely to be covered under the warranty program and that you most likely will be billed for the charges.

What can I say - maybe something like use the warranty as toilet paper?
Well, for sure don't think the warranty will cover anything because it will all be blamed on "improper usage".

Agility 125 / Clutch Springs
« on: September 01, 2010, 04:54:29 PM »
Hello,

Since nobody is answering the topic where the question came up (/index.php?topic=1783.0) I thought I would open a new one.
Hoping that this will resolve my problem I want to replace the clutch springs of my 2009 Agility 125. The parts that I am talking about are marked in the attachment (driven face spring and the three small springs that engage the clutch). Please, can anybody tell me which aftermarket parts I need? I want to replace with stiffer springs and some people here seem to have done it.
Please tell me which parts I need - I can't seem to figure it out myself!

Thanks,
Emil

Agility 125 / Squeaking noise
« on: November 05, 2009, 11:24:20 PM »
Hello,

My brand new Agility started making a funny noise. It squeaks in short intervals when moving - usually at speeds over 20mph and mostly during acceleration. Sort of sounds like a squeaking hamster. It seems to become less when riding for a while (but I wasn't riding for longer than 15min at a time since it started). The noise makes me believe it comes from the drive belt but it seems to come from the front. Also, when I put the scooter on the center stand and accelerate there is no squeaking. Already visually checked and wiggled all kind of parts to see if anything is loose but just can't find any hint.

Does anybody here have a clue - maybe it's a common Agility problem?

Thanks for helping,
Emil

Agility 125 / Which replacement tires?
« on: October 20, 2009, 08:50:22 PM »
At first I didn't believe that the original CS tires could really be as lousy as people write, but they really are. When I am riding sort of rough (or let's just say not very smooth) surfaces, the back tire starts wobbling a bit so that I constantly look if I am having a flat or I get off the scooter and shake the rear tire to see if the suspension is loose. Didn't have a problem in corners yet but I can't stand that feeling any more. Time to replace those tires.
I know this theme has been discussed here quite a bit and somehow it seems that there is no wrong decision on what tires to choose. But I would love to hear what people are thinking about best choice.
These are the tires that I found available here in the USA and the rounded lowest prices (Front/Rear) I came across:

  • Avon Viper Stryke AM63 ($36/$37)
  • Conti Zippy 1 ($37/$40)
  • Michelin Bopper ($37/39)
  • Michelin Pilot Sport SC  ($39/$42)
  • Pirelli SL 26 ($35/$40)
  • Pirelli SL 36 ($40/$42)
  • Pirelli GTS 23/GTS 24 ($41/$51)

Lokking forwards to see your posts,
Emil

Agility 125 / How to mount a GPS?
« on: October 08, 2009, 03:14:38 PM »
Hello,

I just got a new 2009 Agility and love it (besides those horrible mirrors).
Now I am wondering how to attach my GPS with all the plastics on the handle bar. Would prefer RAM mounts but any tip is welcome.

Thanks,
Emil
