max speed 35mph / 55kmph.
« on: September 10, 2010, 08:19:55 AM »
Hi, dear fanatics from over the sea :)

I got myself Kymco People 50cc 2 stroke. ( Only one in my Country ).
Now there are some problems...
Mileage is 22000km.
Kompression is ok, all is new in the motor.
Problem is that max speed is not more than 35mph.
Carb, air filter is fine cleaned
Any ideas?

Gallo, from Estonia ;)

If you have an older one you need to derestrict the cdi. There should be a green wire at the bottem of the unit, unplug and done. The drive boss may be restriced also, that would have to be replaced. Keep playing with it these bikes are awsome 50mph is easy to get out of one. Ps Welcome to the forum!

I'm not sure what the regulations in Estonia are but in US 50cc scooters are restricted to 30mph due to licensing regulations. Most of restrictions lie in stock exhaust. That would be the 1st thing I'd replace. You will have to re-jet the carb for new exhaust but it's worth it.

No doubt the restricions are different in other parts of the world, Not knowing what market yours came from does make it a challenge, 35mph is standard for the usa. What year is it? That can help. After 2005 in the states the pipe can be a problem. If it's before that the cdi and jetting can give you quite a lot for little money.

Any ideas?

..could be cdi, boss drive, jetting...

..has your scoot ever been de-restricted in any way??
..every mod (action) necessitates a (reaction) mod..

I think this one is built on the 2006-2007, and there has not been done any tuning.

http://www.kymcousa.com/showroom/scooters/people50/index.html

Stock as it is. And yes problem could be exhaust.

I was looking if ther anything can be done in the CDI or variomatic all seems to be fine no details found that could prevent running 50mph.

But question about variomatic:

in the first plate there are rolls (6 of them) what weight should they be, as at the moment there is 8gr. rolls, and springs what color should they be. red, yellow?

Please explain to me how does boss drive, affect speed, there is original/stock, but if I will change it...what will happen...faster speedup. end speed?

I just read LUC1992 comment, seems that I have samekind of pipe:
"The only modification i did to it was cut and seal that pipe the extends out to nowhere (i believe it is called a ghost pipe)"

PS! Sorry for my english, as this is not my native language.
I can speak 5 languages, but...way of thinking and grammatical setup is different :)

A derestricted drive boss will be smooth from end to end a restricted one will have a machined edge at one side that has a larger diamiter. It will not let the varietor open all the way for a top gear.
This is a pic of a 2009 pipe if you don't have these extra bits don't worry about the pipe.

Thank you Art, I do not have the, in my pipe.
Question still about rolls weight in the variomatik and spings...what you will suggest me to add there.
At the moment I was able to open only rolls section and there are 8grams rolls. But no idea about spings strenght. Should they be red, or yellow...etc.
And drive boss is derestricted ;)

Stock weights are 8.5g. The stock spring colors do not match other systems so just refered to as stock. I would run the white malossi. Actually this is thie best thing to do. http://www.sip-scootershop.com/EN/Products/M519988/Racing+variator+Multivar.aspx .But if your cdi is restricted than it won't help much. I think they give you a set of 7.5g. Thats what worked best for me.

Hey, i changed the boss drive when i got my scoot, what happens is that instead of revving up to 30/35 and staying at a high rpm around 30 the rpm's will drop but the bike will keep on accelerating to 40-50mph. It is a quick install just make sure you have something to hold the vario in place to undo the bolt.

oh and thanks for posting that picture of the pipe, that is indeed what my pipe looks like, i cut the section of pipe indicated by the second arrow and sealed it. i never noticed the other section marked by the first arrow in your picture, i am going to see if i have that also when i walk back to my bike later. I probably do only it's hidden by the plastic panels.
Cutting the ghost pipe hardly gave me an improvement in anything, i think the main restriction in these pipes has to be inside.

Ya we think there is a catalitic conveter inside. No one has opened one yet.
