ongoing elec.issues
« on: September 12, 2012, 07:02:55 PM »
i've got an 08 that started off with what seemed like ground problems and i think that was part of the problem but as time went on the issue of the starting has gotten worse, every time i go to start the bike it gets weeker on elec power in the front end.... no lights ect. no start. now its got no power at all to the fron† of †he harness .   any help with which part would slowly burn out and cause this? at this time im starting to check parts however im lousy with a meter and elec. issues. i do have a complete manual but could use some real help////thanks
aslo this may or may not be a issue, the bike was blown over by a strong wind and almost fliped totaly over .
I get a dash light when the ignition is on but it dies when i grab the front brake.

Have you checked the battery voltage? Sounds like a weak battery  :-\

If the battery wont charge it could be either a stator issue or the voltage regulator. Put a meter across the battery terminals with the engine idleing and see what the voltage is, rev the throttle and see if the voltage rises, it should go up at least a couple of volts. If not then its prob a stator problem/fault. If it does go up it may be a bad voltage regulator/rectifier.

Which scoot is it you have?

People s 200--2008

Battery is new and good, all connections are tight and clean, the part im looking at now is the starter solenoid, it is the only part that covers all three parts of my issues , 1-brake light switch.2- powerto the front end. 3- faileur to engage the starter,

Sounds like a battery issue. If you turn your key to on, lights should go on no problem. I had a weak start before on my s8 because my battery was only reading 11.6v. I gave it a good charge and got it back up to 14.4v. Ever since, start ups are no issue. Both my headlights are hid and i dont have an issue with starting.

the battery is kept on a charger when not in use and is reading 14+ volts.  I have even tried to jump start the scooter with my harley and my truck. I am still going twards the starter seln. as it should click when the key is turned on but it does not make any noise. i"ll have to wait till someon else is home to verify this to me as I am hard of hearing. I know from past experiance that I should be able to feel the click and I dont
sorry bout the spelling -----in ahurry

I dont know how your cables run on your scoot but maybe i could be a short somewhere? Happens on some where the wiring get near the headset or forks, just wears thro.

Thanks for the hint about the harness near the front end. Thats one i need to check out. Its got to be something like that because as I was working on it today, the problem got a little better( a bit more power to the front end) for  reasons I cant figure out otherwise. I still cant find the frame to engine ground but when I check for that it seems o.k.------well, i'll start ripping off the harness covers on my next day off!

Thanks for all the help!

o.k.  I got the scooter started.... when the scooter is off the battery shows @13 volts, When the scooter is running at idle it shows 9 volts and when the engine is reved the best i can get is 12.5volts.

weak battery? I.E. not enough amps? of is this a problem with the rectifyer?

thanks in advance to whoever helps me with ideas on this issue!!

If the voltage at 3000 rpm is not above 13 volts, then you have a problem with the electrical generating system.
The Stator generates up to 70 volts AC, the rectifiers convert the AC to DC voltage, and the regulator prevents the DC voltage from getting above 14.5 volts.
Of course, there are wires and connectors involved.  So, you need to find out which of the parts is not functioning.

NOTE:  The following is a general idea for solving the problem and may not work with your system..... Get a Service manual or take to a mechanic.

Be sure to clean all of the connectors and make sure the ground wires/bolts are rust-free and secure before doing any additional evaluations.

You can unplug the stator from the rectifier and measure the AC voltage.
You can unplug the rectifier and use an Ohmmeter to measure the resistances of the diodes.
Almost impossible to evaluate the voltage regulator unless you have an electronics shop, so evaluate the stator & rectifiers first.
If they are good, then the regulator is probably the problem.
