Helmet Camera's
« on: June 15, 2012, 05:18:53 PM »
Hello All,
As I'm trying to map out some joy-riding for the summer, I was thinking about getting a helmet cam. There are several options: the big names of GoPro and Contour, and then several smaller companies.

Is anyone currently using a helmet cam when they ride?
 Any recommendations?

Even the cheaper brands are ok. As per experience, here's some pointers.

1. Choose the one with the biggest memory capacity. The camera eats a lot of memory because most models have audio and are high definition. Choose the one where you can choose the resolution.

2. Choose one with a bigger battery.

3. They come in different lens types. Regular and Fisheye. I prefer fisheye because it covers more area.

4. Some have no A/V out, only USB port. You cannot play directly on tv but have to use a computer.
Choose one with A/V or TV out.

5. Choose the one with durable mounts.

This is the Gopro I bought my daughter. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005WY3TI4/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=kinderinfocom-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B005WY3TI4

She liked this model because it could shoot at 60fps in 720p mode and she would then use Adobe After Effects to make cool slo-mo movie cut scenes.

Try to keep this in mind... I really do want to get one so I can post up some insane stuff here. I have been looking at the tiny remote cameras. They make the most sense. I could mount one inside the helmet shell, and have nothing to grab the air. It works for headphones!

I am using the gopro hero2 as well. I have it mounted behind the windshield on the dash of my DT300I. I am planning on recording my complete trip. I am running 2 batteries and a 32 gig memory chip. I have 3 sets so I can record 12 hours. Will dump to a hard drive each night and start over the next day. Planing 4 days out and 4 back.
I believe you get what you pay for. See what those cheap ones do in a rain storm! :)

I have the Contour 1080p, great camera....

this video is my 720p while riding on my Brute Force 750 ATV:

this is a video with the 1080P, me riding my Polaris 850 XP EPS ATV and following my friend on his Brute Force, I since upgraded the firmware to get rid of the red vertical flashing lines while looking in to the sun:

I think I'll get the pen one, and mount it to my forehead like a spy horn...

You could just get some cheap spy glasses. Good combo of peeper glasses and eye protecting in one.  ;D
