Gearbox seal gave in- total loss of oil
« on: February 15, 2018, 03:11:25 PM »
Yesturday, at a customer I saw the rear rim was wet, and smelled like gear oil.
I checked the outlet plug, tight.
There was old oil buildup on the underside, which I did not notice until now.

What kind of damage can i expect from this mishap?

Keep in mind I have a suspicion it has been low for some time, as I often heard a mysterious rattle at the back at idle. But when i held the rear brakes slightly it was silent, so i thought the pads were rattling, and I ignored it.

Rest easy, xsell, that synthetic gear oil and dino gear oil sticks to everything. What I an saying is, my opinion is, you suffered no gear damage IF you rode slowly home and parked it. You may be able to change the seal without taking the box apart.

Thanks crossbolt. I hope to be able to report you are correct.I have not ridden it since getting back from the customer, but "slowly" was about 70kmh.
Tomorrow I will get the bike carrier guy to take it in to the shop. I

Update : the scoot is at the workshop, and disassembled. The mackie says that the gearbox gasket was leaking, not the seal. He will replace both axle seals since I told him it has been weeping for months.
The axle was replaced recently(dec 2017) by him.
He says he will skim the gasket lip to overcome a possible buckled inner gearbox cover (why else would it leak past the gasket?) I must have ridden it without oil for a period, which could cause the aluminium housing to buckle from heat build up.
Anyway, so far it is not serious, the gears look fine. So I am thankful for that.
