Should I buy? 2010 S 250, 9k miles, $1200
« on: February 26, 2018, 04:43:54 AM »
Hi all,

looking for a little bit of guidance. I’ve never owned a scooter before, sold my old Suzuki GS550 a few years ago and haven’t had two wheels since. I’m looking for a scooter to get me back and forth to work and cruise to fishing holes etc., maybe put my girlfriend on the back for a little bop around town every once in a while.  I found a local dealer with a 2010 people s 250 with almost 9k on it. They’re offering what I feel is a good price, but they don’t know any of the history of the bike. I have yet to go look at it because I wanted to get some user advice first...
- do you all feel as though 9k is too high to risk?
- is $1200 a solid price? They originally wanted $1700 and I offered $1000 not knowing much about how long these last.
- is there any scheduled maintenance at xx,xxx?
- any issues that this year is known for?

Your expertise is extemely appreciated!!
Thanks so much!

$1200 sounds like a good price to me.

9000 kilometers is basically nothing.

There's some routine maintenance to be done at 10,000km. But if you don't have a service history, I would be inclined to just do it right away in addition to some things which may have been missed in the past.

In particular: change the engine and gear oil, air filter, fuel filter. Check/adjust the valve clearances. If the brake fluid looks dark, replace it. Check the brake pads for wear. Check the tires for wear and cracks in the side wall.

Thanks for your insight @hypophthalmus and @de dee.  The clock is in mileage, not kilometers- but I assume even 15,000km opposed to 9,000km is still fairly safe. Would it be correct to estimate all of that work + new tires would be around $450-600USD?

Ah... I assumed the S version was the same as the People 250 and only read kilometers.

But yes, with only 9,000 miles it should have plenty of life. You're a bit closer to when you should think about replacing the belt and rollers -- about 12,000 miles.

I think your estimate for the work and parts sounds about right, but I'm not sure as I've always done the work myself.
