Massive oil leak from airfilter box!
« on: September 18, 2017, 09:26:29 PM »
I have an Xciting 250 afi from 2006.
A lot of oil is coming out from the air filter box.
Ive tried almost everything. Changed the hose from the top of the engine (dont know the english word) and the oil still flows.

Can there be to much oil in the top end of the engine caused by a broken valve near the oilpump?
Something else?

Does anyone have an idea?

Thanks!

Check your engine oil level. Chances are it is overfilled.

Thanks, but thats not the case.

Very strange is that when the oil is flowing at the top hose, I have oil pressure warning on idle!

Newly filled to the right level.
I have a new 300 cc cylinder, new piston and rings. All new gaskets.
Engine runs just fine.

I had the same problem before changing the cylinder. No other problem.

Is the gear oil filled to the correct level? Many gearboxes are vented to the air intake. On my  People 150, the gears take a very specific amount of oil and is never to be filled to the level of the hole.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Its not gearbox oil, it comes from the hose on the cylinder head cover. The Crankcase Breather Hose.

Can there be some kind of overpressure?
Or some kind of overflow of ventilation that brings out the oil when passing?

My first impression is the same as Mr. Paul.  If you are SURE that the oil level is correct per the owner's manual and markings on the dipstick, and you're getting a ton of oil coming from the crankcase breather hose...

Then I suspect, because of the "oil pressure warning on idle", that someone didn't put the hydraulic lines back together correctly, and that they somehow routed the lines from the oil pump into the crankcase breather hose network.

This would cause a larger than usual flow of oil, because the oil is normally squeezed out into engine bearings.  The increased flow rate into the unrestricted breather hoses would certainly cause a drop in oil pressure (and the light to come on at idle).  In addition, because during normal operation of the engine, the crankcase gets pressurized by the gasses escaping down the cylinder wall, this would cause the oil to shoot out into the air filter box, as the manufacturer intended.

I normally wouldn't even think this to be the case, because the oil pump supply lines are typically metallic and connect in very specific places, but it may be worth investigation.
