Beware of old people in Buicks!
« on: April 11, 2017, 03:12:42 PM »
This is an alert for all us two-wheelers: someone's Grammy is in a Memphis hospital known for excellent trauma treatment. This is because some guy on a motorcycle hit her as she was pulling out of a business in a small Tennessee town. Business described was on the south side of a four-lane, east, west highway, posted speed limit 45 mph. No doubt the bike hit her left side, killing the rider because, I contend, she pulled out too late leaving no room for the error. I will post more as I get it.

When we were teens, my brother's friend  left his right leg in the back seat of a woman's car when she did the same thing on a 45mph road.

He bought 2 cars, and a house for his parents from her ins. check ...but was never right again. Drink.

And, I'm feeling a little peculiar.

I once heard of a similar accident posted on the motorcycle and riding related forum (can't remember which one) many years ago. It's scary to think how these accidents can happen again.

It's not just motorcyclists, anyone remember this? It's even got it's own Wiki page and became the inspiration for a South Park Season 7 episode "Grey Dawn". He was also driving a Buick.  :o

It was a young black fellow on a crotch rocket. Estimated spreed over 100 mph at impact. His head was lying on the pavement and an arm was at the roadside and the remainder of his body was elsewhere. We have 1st responders in our church and they were talking about it tonight. All the body armor, in the world, wouldn't have helped him.

Thanks, Mac. You have given confirmation of what we heard from a local source. We also heard that it was about 9 pm. Can you confirm that time?

Sadly only for identification.

Time is correct. The injured lady is Thelma Pullman and is currently in the Med with a broken back and several other injuries. The Bike driver was Derick Hester. He struck Thelma's SUV right behind the left front wheel at an estimated speed of 120 mph and the first ones on the scene said his body exploded and they were picking up body parts in plastic bags. Ages of both are unknown, but Derick was a young black male and Thelma was an older white female.. Any prayers for Thelma and the family of Derick would be appreciated.

That's so sad for the lady in this case as the motorcyclist was being stupid. Best wishes for her.

Thanks again, Mac. The time confirmation was important as it was well after sunset. 100 mph is 147 ft/second or approximately 50 yards/sec. If I recall Chickasaw Power is over 200 yards fron the convenience store to the west so Ms Pulliam had about 4 seconds to recognize that squinty lightset on most crotch rockets was all she had to realize how quick he would arrive. Speed limit there is 45 mph. Poor kid backed himself in to a corner and nearly took her out with him. Wonder what the crash report says. Any chance you contacts could get you a copy?

I doubt it. They will probably guard this one closely as I would think there will be a large lawsuit, either by Ms Pullman, if she lives or her family. Technically, he had the right of way, but sense he was travelling at nearly three times the posted limit and that is reckless driving, I would think that would negate his ROW and any court would find him at fault. Hope he was insured, for her sake.

All around a horrible accident. The poor MC rider proved the price of stupidity, and unfortunately the elderly woman driver had to pay as well. Speed is fun, but there's a time and place for everything, but never before safety. Hester was 39, so no kid, but not making good choices.
