Odometer not working Kymco 500
« on: April 10, 2017, 02:40:51 AM »
Hi guys, I bought my first scooter today, the 2009 Kymco 500 Xciting Ri. The only issue is the odometer isn't working. It's difficult to explain, but I filmed a video:

Any idea on how to fix this?

That is quite puzzling. The first thing I always try when anything on the dashboard doesn't work is the reboot procedure described by several other folks on this board. IIRC, you disconnect the positive battery lead, turn on the ignition key, then reconnect the positive lead. This serves to reset the controls. Worth a try.

3 possibilities.  The speedometer assembly, the ECU (engine control unit), or the wiring between the two.  Since the bike runs, I'd lean away from it being the ECU.

The culprit would be the digital display.  If you are brave enough to open up the panel and check the solder of the lcd display to the board, it might just be a loose connection.  Worse case would be the lcd display is busted.  You can buy an lcd display on ebay for cheap in ebay, part number would be clearly printed at the back of the lcd display.  This would be a cheaper option than buying the whole instrument cluster.  A bit of a pain to desolder the old display and solder on the new one.
