Another Busted Belt after 4K miles
« on: February 12, 2017, 06:31:52 PM »
Hi Everyone

Just over 2 weeks ago and just over 4k since my last belt broke, my 2012 Dowtown 300i belt broke again.  I don't know why this happening any suggestions.  Beside get a new scooter.  This time, I was using Dr. Pulley's sliders.

4k miles too soon based on experience of several riders on this forum. 20000 to 40000 miles and belt is still good seems normal for the DT300i. What weight of sliders and how do you ride the bike?

when the belt go,s that fast ,.  the pulleys could be off set, missing washers ( shims )  just take the cover off and look at belt with motor running

(This is a biggie) Did you buy a Kymco OEM belt? If not, that is your problem. Otherwise;
Do you rev the scooter at traffic lights? Is the scooter idle set high? Do you ride two-up a lot with hills? Do you accelerate/decelerate rapidly? Sounds like something is causing too much heat in your cvt system. I would try to rule out riding style and conditions and work from there. Best of luck!

I think the issue is that the belt would not be original, hence the wrong specifications.

I suspect the same Kneeslider. Many after-market belts are not the same quality/size as the original.

I'm guessing that a belt snap isn't as catastrophic as a chain snap on a normal motorcycle?

I had a chain snap on my RD250LC once - it took half the crankcase cover away, the entire chainguard and gouged the swinging arm. It also wrecked the back tyre as it locked up, leaving monsterous skidmarks on both the road surface and my underpants.

Kymco Belt
Wrong size KYMCO belt? You probably know it's correct, so, you are right. Something seems quite wrong.
CVT assembled correctly ?....front/back belt pulleys misaligned? ....the shims, washers, etc. in correct position or missing?
Airducts open on CVT cover for proper airflow ?
Riding at max speed for long periods with 2-up......if not - what else could cause belts to break so often?
Old/rotten/aged belt ?

HEAT, misaligned parts (incl. weights), gouged pulley surfaces, roller/slider weights too far away from stock size.
I got nothing else.
Please let us know what you find.

According to John @ Moxie's Scooter, the variator wore out that is what casued the belt to break.
