Had a bad accident
« Reply #16 on: July 06, 2016, 02:46:20 AM »
Update: they moved me back to my hometown, Tallahassee, Florida. That's a plus since most of my family and friends live here. Also there is a full time specialist that deals with this kid no of stuff. They are going to go back in and see for themselves what can be done. So pray that they feel confident in saving lower leg and rebuilding the bone. Thanks again. God bless. Side note. Extended family will beverages n town this weekend for the Forbes family reunion.

Dude sorry to hear of your travails. Life has a way of changing so quickly. It's a forced rest for you now and time for inner reflection, something sometimes that's forced and never chosen. The learning curve on riding is sometimes steep and therefore this will make you a better rider. Looks like change is in the air. Wear it well.

Been away for a couple four, five days. Really sorry to hear this. I'm glad your injury wasn't worst. I can't believe people drove by without stopping to help. What's the world coming to? Anyway I hope you heal up fast and fully. Glad too it didn't effect your humor. It's the best kind of medicine you know?

Sad development. But I'm remaining upbeat. There's a strong possibility that I may lose part of my lower leg. Lost 4" of shin bone. Multiple breaks in the other bone, muscle loss, and soft tissue loss. Any one or two of those things would be a fairly workable procedure. However , with problems in all those areas the task would be long (12 or more months) and arduous AND would likely result in a problematic and chronically painful lower extremity with little practical use. He stated that he believed that I liked the outdoors and extensive walking . And that any major walking would be nearly over. He also stated that I would likely have to change careers (auto mechanic) and get a desk job.  In other words the limb would be mostly for looks rather than function.

But if I choose amputation and a prosthetic lower leg and foot, it would still involve significant lifestyle changes. But I should still be able to walk outside and I enjoy it. And I could continue to be an auto mechanic. I could also be able to be on my "feet" in around 6 to 8 weeks from the beginning of the process because I'm still "relatively" young and seem to be a quick healer.

Of course, I'll get a second opinion before making a final decision. And I still am praying for a miracle. But for now I'm leaning towards letting her m cut it off and getting it over with. He states that he's in the business of salvaging limbs. But he also believes in telling the truth to his patients. He also has a good reputation. But he ain't God. So the final decision is mine alone.nprsybthatbll make the right decision. Thanks guys

Wish you all the strength and determination to get through this and hopes that they are wrong about saving the leg without long term pain or loss of use. :(

Again, much love to you all. Thanks for taking time to read my updates and to wish me well. I realize it may be a downer. But having some people with the same hobby to share with is very valuable to me. I don't know any of you personally. But you seem like old friends. Bless you all.

Hey Forbes....
It is with a sinking heart that we read of your latest.
Yes sir....2nd opinion needed.
As an old Vietnam medic.....I can tell you that your amazingly positive attitude will go a long way to getting the very best outcome from your injury.
Oh hell yes you're going to have some dark moments....as you face this test with your body .....go there....do that for as long as you need to to get through the moment.
Then recover. ...as many times as you need to. It is often cyclical.

You had a bad break. No argument.
Keep your chin up troop!
You will get through this....because you are not walking this thing alone.
You are not.
Prayers from Tim H's patio.

Forbes, hang in there buddy, your scooter family here is cheering for you. As Tom has said; attitude is everything and it looks like yours is healthier than most. In Victor Frankl's book, Man's Search For Meaning, he studied the psychology of those in Nazi concentration camps of which he was a prisoner too. He was a psychiatrist and observed who survived and who didn't. Often, the physically healthier ones died first because it was one's sense of purpose in their life that made the real difference in their survival. Those that found meaning in their suffering was crucial and those that couldn't settle into camp life and get on with things, often gave up hope and withered away.

Like you said, you're still young, strong and can heal quickly. You'll do well dude. I can feel it in me bones.

We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers. You are one of us. We are a scooter family.
When an injury is life changing, it is serious. I hope the doctors can reconstruct your foot so it functions well.
A friend of mine lost his lower leg to diabetes. He gets around pretty good but, says he has trouble walking down hill, especially on a grassy slope.
Please keep us posted on your progress. We care.

:( I sure hope a second opinion (or third or ...) results in better news. Feel free to bend our ears. Continued prayers for you for strength.
