Eye Candy | Videos and Pics / New ride, got artistic today
« on: October 05, 2020, 04:30:29 AM »
No I did not get rid of any of my other rides, lol. Ok so I ran across a deal I couldn't resist a little over a week ago. I decided I needed some nice photos of her so I went out cruising today and went overly artistic. She is a brand new 2017 Piaggio BV350 in red. :)

Thank to Kevin at Vespa Motor sport for leading the run and crew to some great taco shops around San Diego. Another great day in So Cal for a ride across the Coronado Bay bridge, down the beach, and around. Started out with about 30 scoots hitting four shops ending with a shrimp cocktail watching the sunset.  :)

A few photos from the run. Had about 30 scoots and great beach weather.

Technical | How To / What's the point?
« on: December 22, 2019, 05:33:51 PM »
What's the point of having a anti scratch coating that flakes off? Just noticed this on the 2014 MyRoad 700i and it's not the only Kymco I've seen this happen on. I also have someones 2016 Xciting 500 here with the same issue.

Eye Candy | Videos and Pics / 2018 Motorcycle Show
« on: November 18, 2018, 06:00:05 PM »
Saturday I went to the motorcycle show. I turned 10 K miles on my '03 Atlantic 500 heading out. I came to see the Honda Super Cub but as always there were other interesting things. I haven't paid much attention to what the manufacturers have been doing so I was surprised to see a production Yamaha Niken 3 wheel motorcycle. I found it quite amusing to see the front tires are the same size as the Suzuki Burgman 650 (and my MyRoad 700i) 120/70R15. The usual mix of custom and vintage bikes like a Mitsubishi scooter. Here's a photo album link and a few photos.

Xciting 700i / MyRoad 700i stalling again!
« on: November 05, 2018, 04:03:01 AM »
So here I am trying to ride home from work (63 miles distance) and shortly after getting a few miles down the road the bike stalls out on the freeway in the fast lane. I coast over to the right side and crank the bike over but it will not start. The check engine light is flashing out a code 2 for the crank position sensor. After waiting 20 minutes the bike would start again but only run for a minute or two before the wait started over again. So the last time I had the crank sensor replaced when the bike was under warranty was 7/17 at 5,385 miles. It's now the end of 10/18 with 14,876 miles so a little over a year and less than 10,000 miles later it needs yet another crank sensor. To add insult to injury I managed the drop the bike on the right side loading by myself. Fortunately someone came over to help me and the damage appears to be minimal. So it would appear if I keep this bike I will need to carry a spare CPS and tools necessary to swap it out along the roadside when it happens again. :-(

Xciting 700i / Wobble part 2
« on: November 05, 2018, 03:27:47 AM »
So back in June at 11,053 miles the factory Maxxis rear tire on my MyRoad developed a bubble (beginning of tread separation) under the tread. Maxx is response after posting on Facebook said, sorry your out of warranty. Mind you the bike had only been on the road just over two years but because it sat in a crate the first two years before being prepped and sold I was SOL. Nice that they care so much about their crappy tires. So here I am at 13,020 miles on the freeway when I start feeling a wobble again. I pull over to find the front tire has a bubble and is starting to tread separate. 3,000 miles and 3 months (Sept) after the rear tire the front is doing the same thing. What POS tires these are, downright dangerous and potentially deadly. Maybe this is why they do not sell street bike tires here but regardless I will not buy Maxxis tires for my Jeep (had two sets of the Creepy Crawlers before) or ProComp tires now made by Maxxis (originally made by Cooper Tire in the US which I have had two sets on my truck). I would also urge Kymco to stop installing them at the factory even if they are made in Taiwan like the bike. I have since replaced them with the OE Bridgestone tires that Suzuki uses.

Xciting 500 / '16 Xciting 500 loss of power/top end speed
« on: November 04, 2018, 03:31:40 PM »
I've had loaned to me a 2016 Xciting 500i with about 13,000 miles on it. I have ridden it about 1,500 miles and have noticed a huge drop in power/top end speed. Originally I could run 80-85 mph indicated at around 7,000-7,500 rpm top end. Now I can't even reach 70 mph indicated at close to 6,000 rpm at wide open throttle and can't even maintain 65 mph indicated at around 5,500 rpm with slight grades on the freeway. I have also noticed what seems like excessive oil in one of the drain tubes. With not even 15,000 miles on its not safe to ride on the freeway and feels like the engine is going to give out.

General Discussion / Keep an eye on your tires!

Keep an eye out on your tire wear and condition, it might just save you an injury or even worse.

Xciting 700i / Wobble
« on: June 14, 2018, 04:54:48 AM »
Last week a side to side wobble developed from takeoff to about 50 mph and I thought it was just some funky wear due to grooved freeway riding. Monday I decided to have a look at it and maybe shave the tires a bit. OMG I've never had a tire look/end up like this. I have put over 75,000 miles on my Burgman 650's with Bridgestones, Pirellis, Metzelers, and Dunlops in the same size and never seen this. Here I was thinking these factory eqipped Maxxis tires were wearing great with 11,000 miles on them. Maybe this is why Maxxis stopped selling street bIke tires in the US many years ago. They sell bicycle, dirt bike, atv, car, and truck tires (I've had two sets of them on my Jeep). The rear tire is separating under the tread in one large area on one side but the most disturbing thing are the radial cracks (crack doesn't seem to convey the size of these, some 2" long) from the sidewall to the tread on the left sidewall, one even showing a bit of nylon cord! Good thing it didn't blow out on me while on the freeway.

Xciting 700i / Clutch Chatter
« on: June 13, 2018, 04:07:55 AM »
Another project I worked on back in April. My clutch started to slip/grip (chatter) on take off sometimes quite violently that was really bothering me. I figured it might have been a issue with gear oil mist having ended up on the clutch shoes before the dealer had finally fixed it from leaking into the CVT. I pulled the CVT cover off and the clutch bell. Pretty much what I expected, hot spotting on the clutch bell and dark somewhat sticky bands on the clutch shoes. A bit of sanding inside the clutch bell, sprayed brake cleaner (not that crap we have here in CA with acetone in it) to clean off the clutch shoes and then blew them off with air after some light sanding of them. Put it all back together and so far after 3,000 miles still seems to be doing just fine. A little concerned with the pulley wear though at 8,000 miles.

Xciting 700i / Cooling fan runs all the time with the key on
« on: June 11, 2018, 05:41:37 AM »
Another project I tackled earlier in March. I noticed when turning the key on when the bike was cold that the cooling fan would run. I got down and unplugging the coolant temp switch screwed into the lower radiator noticed the fan would turn off so I had a bad temp switch (at least it failed on vs. not which would have led to the bike overheating). I was out of the electrical warranty coverage period but figured I'd ask Kymco USA which thankfully mailed me out a new switch no charge. This is the same switch used on several Kymco models. I swapped out the switch myself and all is back to working as it should.

Xciting 700i / Cluster lens fogging
« on: June 11, 2018, 05:33:24 AM »
Been a while since I've posted new stuff. This I worked on back in January. The gauge cluster started showing some weird fogging inside the lens where the warning lights are on either side of the gauges. I pulled the gauge cluster out, took the lens off, used some cleaner wax to remove the buildup and put it all back together. It looks like the fogging is back and I will have to go through this again at some time when I feel like it. I hope it's not going to keep happening.
