Grandvista 250 / Clutch went out on as I was getting on the highway...
« on: September 20, 2019, 05:59:46 AM »
Almost 28K miles the belt was spinning unless going down hill otherwise max speed was about 40mph to keep it from slipping.  Took it apart and the thin 38mm nut has come off and taken the threads with it.

Not sure where to order an OEM replacement as I saw the malossi clutch does not seem to include that part.

Downtown 300 / Death by a 1000 cuts...Front Fender Broke
« on: September 11, 2019, 07:23:39 AM »
I changed the headlight to an LED and since that time I noticed a clunking noise coming from the front fairing.  Went in a second time to aim the head light.  Same noise.  Today I was taking the cover off and saw the front fender had broken.

Downtown 300 / OEM Kymco belt with 18K mi on it...
« on: July 30, 2019, 09:47:17 PM »
OEM Kymco belt (replaced in 8/2013) mfg in 2009 bought from local dealer for $85! now has 18K mi on it... is it ok to keep using?  Seems to be working fine?

Also, if I replace it should I go with a Kevlar belt or a particular aftermarket brand?

Downtown 300 / Kenda K413 Tire after 2 years and 5,000 miles
« on: July 19, 2019, 08:10:18 PM »
See attached.  The longest lasting tire was the OEM brand that came on the scooter but I can't remember the brand or model of those tires.  Does anyone remember or have a GV250 / Bet & Win 250?

My scoot showed 4 bars when I got off the highway as in overheat.

History:
Currently at 21,500 miles.  Only time other time I had an issue was when I changed the antifreeze at around 12K mi and did not get all the air out of the system.  Today in ~ 87 degree temps on the highway i noticed 3 / 5 bars lit - usually runs at 2 bars unless it is really hot out.  On the way home I noticed 4/5 bars and briefly 5 blinking bars / boxes.  Checked coolant and it was not low, also coolant in the reservoir was only lukewarm.

UPDATE: I removed the thermostat and it took a while to warm up but the display showed overheating.  I rocked the scoot side to side to expel air with radiator cap off.  The radiator was not very hot.

UPDATE: Yesterday the scoot ran fine and today too.  Today temps were as high as 87 and I did a mix of highway and sitting in traffic.  No problems.  Also, yesterday I was at 2 bars (normal) and on a side street the gauge jumped to three then bars then back to 3... and two again.  I'm wondering if it is a loose wire or something?

Final Solution: replaced the head gasket then no more overheating issues.   I reinstalled the thermostat a few months later.  No problems even on the highway at full throttle in 85+ degree weather.

People 250, Bet & Win 250, Grand Dink 250, Grandvista 250 and maybe other Kymco scooters (and probably other brands a well).... Clutch Squeak when starting suddenly or on a hill.

http://www.kymcoforum.com/index.php?topic=22592.msg157748#msg157748

The solution has nothing to do with the clutch shoes or springs.  The variator mechanism in the rear which is like a giant screw that when moved one way closes up forcing the pulley to the outer diameter of the pulley and when it moves the other way is separates and allows the belt to fall down inside closer to the center as a way of changing gears or gear ratios.  I discovered this when my rear wheel was starting to have trouble "unlocking when coming to a stop.  If I put my scoot on the center stand there was drag when turning the rear wheel as though I was stuck in gear.

The solution remove the rear pulley as a complete assembly - put it on the ground and stand on it and unlock the large thin locking nut and slowly release the spring pressure.  Dissemble all parts, clean off old grease put new grease in and reassemble.  This solve my problem but also eliminated the clutch squeak AND changed the entire "feel" of starting from a stop - no more squeak and no more feeling the clutch "lock up" The transistion from stop to 5 mph to 10, 15 etc is totally seamless under all circumstances - even starting on a very steep hill.

Looking back it was at about 7 years and 10K miles that I first started to hear or notice the squeek when accelerating rapidly or on a steep hill.  So this fairly straightforward procedure is probably a good idea every 8 to 10K miles.

I just noticed the problem today.  I have ~ 19,500 miles on my 2005 GV250 that I have owned for 4.5 years and 16K miles.

The automatic centrifugal clutch is squeaking and is partially engaged.  When the motor is off the rear tire is hard to turn.  This never happened before and I suspect the clutch shoes or spring? need to be replaced or something needs to be lubed.

Bettin n Losin your expertise is needed.

I last changed the drive belt at 10K miles.  I have never changed the Clutch discs and when I last inspected them around 18K? they looked fine.  Is the spring worn out or do I need to lube something that the clutch slides on?

I have noticed for the past couple of months the scooter has difficulty starting in the morning.  Otherwise everything runs perfect.

Xciting 500 / xciting 500 vs burgman 400.
« on: March 05, 2016, 06:49:40 AM »
I've ridden two different B400's.  One had some handlebar vibration.   Several years ago someone said the Burgman was superior to the xciting.  Thoughts?

I've owned my 2005 GV250 for almost 5 years and put 17k on it so I feel Kymco makes a decent product.

Grandvista 250 / Kymco vs Generic "GY6" Chinese Scooters ... Thoughts?
« on: February 17, 2016, 07:09:17 AM »
Is there a quality longevity difference between Kymco and no name chinese scooters?

How would you rank brands such as:

Kymco up to 700cc

Limited to 150 to 170cc max:
Genuine
Lance
SYM

Japanese scooters: Suzuki, Honda, Yamaha
Italian: piaggio / vespa. Are some piaggio's made in China? or engines?

I know from reading the Burgman forum various models had some issues.

BettinANDlosing - any thoughts?

UPDATE: 04-06-2016
I have filled up around 4 times and have been careful not to fill the filler neck to the top by stop as I see gas bubbling up.  When I look at the area above the dipstick I no longer see what looked like oil stains.  Also, hot starting seems a little better but the weather need to get hotter to be sure.

I just had this problem and realized what was going on with my 2005 Grandvista 250.  I chronically fill to the top.  Last night I overfilled to the point that some gas spilled from the top.  Next day the scooter started right up no problem.  I let it warm up and shut it off.  Restarted and went to the gym.  Scooter sat in the hot sun for several hours.  Could not get it started even with the throttle twisted 1/2 way.  Then I noticed a big puddle of gas on the ground coming out of the bottom hole that is ~ 1/2 inch wide.  Verified that all lines were hooked up correctly.  Removed the carb and cranked the motor to dry things and hooked up the carb and got it started and put the seat back in.  Got home ~ 3 miles.  No gas leaked out.

Searched google which led me here and then I realized that last night I over filled and probably got gas into the charcoal filter.  Also, I ride 5 days a week and have 19K miles so I always fill to the top then carefully tilt the scooter which causes the gas to go down into the filler neck to get the maximum distance out of each tank.  I'm going to stop doing this.

The manual warns against overfilling but I though I was getting away with it.  I also noticed on my scoot and another that had 26K miles that there is a stain under the carb and lower right side of the motor that looks like oil but is actually gas.  My and probably the other scooter owners chronic overfilling may be the cause of this issue.  I will clean that area, and stop overfilling and see if it goes away.

Could this also contribute to the hot starting problem where you need crank the motor with the throttle at ~ 1/2 way open?

My idle is too high

This could be due to a throttle cable that is too tight or misrouted. It could also mean you need to turn the idle screw on the carb counterclockwise ~1/4 turn. A high idle may be due to a vacuum leak. The rubber manifold between the carb and the cylinder head can crack over time. Try starting the engine and squirting some water around the carb, manifold, and vacuum hoses. If the idle decreases, you have a vacuum leak somewhere.
