Technical | How To / Issue starting Kymco Like 200i, seems electrical.
« on: October 25, 2018, 11:06:34 PM »
So I sold my scooter, a few weeks ago, but I sold it to the restaurant next door to my home, hence the inquiry.

Anyway, so when I turn the key lights come on but when I turn the key to start everything turns off, so it seems like the power is being directed to the starter but nothing happens, bike dosen't turn over or make a sound, followed by one long blink, on quick blink on the engine light.

Any idea's?

Thanks, Jon

General Discussion / So I sold my 200i
« on: October 16, 2018, 11:17:44 PM »
Just wanted to thank Stig and everyone on this forum for all your help and support though the past year and a half.

I felt I needed a little more for my day to day commuting in NYC so I found a good deal on a 2015 CB500X ABS with 9,000 miles on it, but I'm going to miss the girl.  I loved my Like and what a great way to get to know two wheels in this crazy city after 20 years off.

I'll still check in and god willing  I'll almost certainly see another scooter again in my future.

Ride Safe, Jon.

Technical | How To / What windshild did you put on your Like?
« on: September 01, 2018, 03:27:28 PM »
I did one winter in nyc without a windscreen, but I'm starting to think about the next, labor day and all, and I think it's an accessory I want to add.

Any thought's and experiences with compatible products would be appreciated.

Thanks, Jon

Hello Jon, any chance you can post a DIY on the LEDs you've installed on your LIKE200i?
    Bulbs you used? etc.
Or, if not, some photos of them lit up?

Lots of folks have talked about adding LEDs to the LIKE.

Stig,

So I don't have a DIY on the LED upgrade, but your break fluid photos are a good start for the headlight, I used a plastic/nylon spakle tool instead of the pizza wheel.  Pretty self explanatory once you get the dash off, it's really just a wire clip to hold the lamp in the reflector body in place with a couple of screws but be careful not to drop a washer into the body of the scooter as I did, I had to cobble something up to make it work as a result.  I used a "CREE XPH-50" with a H7 base (three prong) as the replacement. Big improvement!

As for the running lights in the fairing, they can be accessed through the glove box and are somewhat frustrating to install as you almost have to dislocate your wrist to install them, it took a lot of trial and patience for me to accomplish.  The Lamps used are a T10 base and the brand I purchased was "Yorkim", no trouble yet and added bonus, the same lamp can be used for the license plate light replacement.

For the tail light, top box and rear directionals I would suggest other readers to check out your DIY on your top box install, as that is where I learned how to do it and it's very thorough. Everything back there is behind that plastic panel in the wheel well.

As far as kit, I used "JDM ASTAR Extremely Bright PX Chipset 1157 LED Lamp Brilliant Red" for the tail light and it has a very good differentiation between break and running light (very important in an urban environment) and much brighter when breaking.

And finely for the top box I used "Wiipro Universal LED Light Strip Tail Brake Stop Turn Signal 32LED 8" Flexible led light for motorcycle" super fine wires (break out the soldering iron) and very cheap, but it's fairly bright and I have be happy with it so far.

Just a note, not so much for the standard lamp replacements, but for the additional top box LED strip.  I would suggest investing in a multi-meter so you can check where your voltage is in regard to application ie. break, running, directional. It is not hard to screw it up as everything is tight and probably for most of you, your laying on the ground with a soldering iron above your face.  They can be had pretty cheap, but as an electrician I would suggest spending at least $35-$50 if you can afford it, also speaking of soldering, I use a butane soldering iron, I've had it mine for 20 years, fits in the palm of your hand, good heat control, pretty cheap and no wire; so it can make your life at least a little easier in a fairly uncomfortable position.

Hope that helps, and thanks for all the help you have shared.

Technical | How To / TSP (Throttle Position Sensor) 6 Blinks
« on: July 26, 2018, 02:36:47 AM »
So I've had this TPS warning running on my Like 200i for about a month, but didn't notice any real change in throttle response, so I didn't think much of it.  Funny thing is that in the last few days I've noticed the warning no longer shows.  Anybody know why this might be the case, or if I should be concerned?

Thanks, Jon

Roadcraft / So the Like and I went down last night (were both ok)
« on: July 23, 2018, 11:13:46 AM »
Two blocks away from arriving at work, driving on the west side highway next to the World Trade Center.

A GMC Suburban attempted to make a right turn across two lanes, I happened to be in the one next to him, just off his bumper at about 20mph.

Roads were wet, with on and off rain when I noticed his move I broke hard, wheels locked up and right into the passenger side door. Luckily I mostly slid rear wheel toward the SUV

I bashed up my right elbow and hip but nothing serious as for the bike, broke some of the muffler shrouding plastic and some scratches on the side of the front fairing.

More then anything my nerves were shook up on the 10mi ride home after a hard overnight lighting gig at 9/11 museum, it was my first and hopefully last time experiencing a crash on public

streets.  I grew up on dirt bikes, but this one shook me up.  I gotta send out props the people of NYC at least 4 or 5 cars stopped in there respective lanes stopping traffic to check that I was ok.

Ride Safe Everyone.

Technical | How To / Oil coating underside of Kymco 2016 Like 200i
« on: July 18, 2018, 02:59:45 AM »
Hi Everyone,

Just changed my oil today and noticed that the underside of the crank case and engine is coated in an black oily dirty mix. Any suggestions as to what could be causing this, the scoot seems to be performing normally and generally I put about 150 miles on it a week. On the last oil change I didn't notice this build-up, but prior to that had noticed the shop overfilled the oil on the bike and upon changing the air filter after a dirty NYC winter of riding noticed some oil in the air box.

I intend to clean the buildup off later this week and try to locate the source of the oil leak but any tips on where to look would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Jon

General Discussion / Thoughts on KYMCO Xciting 400i
« on: March 30, 2018, 04:10:19 PM »
Hi Everyone,

I'm seriously considering buying the KYMCO 400i based on my needs as a NYC all year commuter.

I love my Like 200i but considering the amount of driving I'm doing (5000mi since May 17) on NYC streets and highways, often enduring the city's perilous road conditions, especially in the spring, my bike at times feels lacking.  Between the suspension travel, small wheels, and lack of power I often find myself pushing the Like to it's limits, and beating myself up in the process, neither one a comfortable thing to be doing.

I have looked at more traditional motorcycles, of course my friends like to poke fun at the fact that I scoot everywhere. but between the storage, comfort, overall convenience, and gas savings I can't see myself on anything other then a scooter right now.

That said, the 400i seems a good fit, my concerns primarily involve it's weight and size, it's heavy and big and say what you will about lane splitting but in this city of mad traffic it is the only way to get around efficiently on a motorbike.  Because of Stig I have also considered the Piaggio BV 350, as far as size and weight it is a more appealing bike, but from what I read, it's limitation comes on the top end, highway travel and high speed acceleration.  My only transport is my scooter and I want to be able to safely use it anywhere, so I need some top end confidence.

Any owners of the 400i or anyone for that matter, I would appreciate your thoughts.  I love my Like, and will almost certainly keep it on the road for the high traffic rush hour days because it is so easy to throw around and also for the depths of winter, but I need to consider something more appropriate for my day to day needs, the 400i seems on paper that it might fit the bill.

Please let me know what you think and thanks.

General Discussion / Shorted out electrical system Kymco Like 200i
« on: March 25, 2018, 01:25:44 PM »
So I attempted to add a led strip to my top box yesterday, the light didn't work, despite continuity checks and sodering all the wires.  I removed the light but left the wires that were tied in to the tail lights coiled in the top box but foolishly didn't tape the bare ends.  I noticed on my way to work that the directional no longer worked, and in fact all lights were off.  Got to work, turned off the bike and sure enough, it won't start.  Parked on NYC street, any help with what fuses to get and how to access would be greatly appreciated. I really hope to get this bike back to Queens tonight.

Thanks, Jon

I'm actively riding as I just noticed the bolt was missing today (right side around 10:30 position), should I be concerned?

Also, any information on the bolt itself (ie. size, specific ordering information, purpose, ect) would be helpful.

I would like to replace it as soon as possible but just don't know where to start.

Thanks, Jon

General Discussion / Taillight replacement?
« on: February 27, 2018, 03:17:58 AM »
Hello,

So after blindly figuring out how to replace the headlight and running lamps with LED's today on my Kymco Like I realized, that though I was ultimately successful, I made a lot of mistakes along the way, and did a lot of unnecessary things before I got the job done.

That said, I thought it wise to inquire about disassembling the taillight assembly and replacing the the lamp, any tips, instructions or direction would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Jon

General Discussion / Kymco Like 200i -Question about a bolt/screw
« on: February 27, 2018, 03:08:32 AM »
Hi all,

Does anybody know the purpose of the long screw directly under the headlight casing/reflector and accessible with a long screw driver through the faring?
I removed it when I was figuring out how to replace the head-lamp and forgot to put it back before taking the bike out.  The head of the screw was to large to pass through the faring slit so the bolt was loose inside.

Should I be concerned?

Thanks, Jon

Technical | How To / A good source for KYMCO Like compatable LED lamps?
« on: January 21, 2018, 07:54:23 PM »
Hi everyone,

Does anybody know a know a good website for after market LED lamps, I have been digging around and they seem pretty hard to find online.

Ultimately I would like (no pun intended) to convert all the indicators, the headlight, tail light, directionals and the running lamps on the front fairing.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, jon
