Grandvista 250 / GV250 charging light
« on: February 18, 2024, 10:04:56 PM »
Here's a puzzler: While riding on a smooth road yesterday at a constant 25mph the red charging light came on, then went off after a few seconds and did not come on again.  After I got home and parked I restarted the bike and the light did its normal on and off after a couple of seconds of running. The motor was running perfectly when this occurred.

This has never happened before and I'm completely befuddled as to possible causes.

The bike is a 2009 with 12K miles on it and has given flawless service other than needing a starter relay at 9K miles. I just checked the battery after sitting for 24 hours: 12.76 volts. I then started it and the light went off seconds later as it normally does.

I welcome all ideas on what could have caused this (so far) one time event, and suggestions on what to check or replace. I'd rather replace all suspected parts now, or at least order them now to have them ready, and not have my only scooter disabled while I wait for the correct part to get here. There's always room in my spares box for more GV250 parts.

Technical | How To / Brake light switch failure and solutions
« on: December 22, 2022, 10:58:36 PM »
I have had both brake light switches on my Downtown300 fail and one on my Grandvista250. The contacts can be cleaned up by popping open the switch with a knife and sanding the contacts, or you can buy a pair of generic switches on ebay for $8, shipping included. Kymco gets $20 plus shipping for theirs, not to mention the long wait. I don't know if Kymco uses the same switches on all their bikes but for 8 bucks it seems like a good gamble, no?

Grandvista 250 / Parts?
« on: May 26, 2020, 12:43:51 AM »
The dealers for Kymco parts on the General Discussion page no longer list the Grandvista 250!

Does anyone know a source of OEM parts for our GV 250's?

Grandvista 250 / Starter motor keeps running
« on: February 23, 2020, 11:10:37 PM »
I recently bought my third GV 250 and this one has an intermittent problem: the starter motor keeps running. There are two possibilities: the starting switch is not turning off...or the relay is staying on. By disconnecting the starter switch at the relay (the plastic connector with two  thin wires) you can determine if it's the switch: if it continues to crank, it's not the switch.  Then...it must be the relay, which it will be almost all the time. Why? Because the relay has to carry a large current and over thousands of starts the contacts become pitted from sparking, eventually generating enough heat to "spot weld" the contacts together. I had this happen on a 1946 car; I'd smack the relay and it would stop cranking. My buddy who sells BMW bike parts said this is a common problem on old Beemers; he sells a lot of relays. The good news is...you can buy a relay on ebay for $13:

General Discussion / Beware of Chapparal Motorsports!
« on: November 21, 2019, 01:17:56 AM »
I recently bought a "new" Dunlop 13" tire for my DT 300i on ebay  from Chapparal for a very low price ($40).

The mechanic who mounted it told me why it was so cheap: it was manufactured 3.5 years ago! I didn't think to check the date stamp on the tire before going through the hassle and expense of mounting it. Sure, I can return it but now that it's on the bike that isn't practical. According to the "experts" tires should be replaced after five years due to rubber deterioration regardless of the tread wear, especially here in smoggy CA.

Chapparal should have disclosed the age of the tire in the ad; I never would have bought it had I known. Upon a google review search of Chapparal I found most of the employee reviews gave it a one star rating for the low pay, no benefits, no promotional opportunities and lousy attitude from management. I add unethical advertising to the list. Oh, yeah, one more gripe: their email contact link doesn't work, it keeps giving "error" messages. Caveat emptor!

It looks great. Strange that it's coming from The Czech Republic.

General Discussion / Cyclepedia manual
« on: August 24, 2019, 11:17:20 PM »
Cyclepedia sells service manuals for our scoots and on the first page of the Downtown 300i manual they ask us to contact them with errors, so I spent around ten minutes writing an email about the nonsense compression measurements listed on page 6 (228 psi!). When I sent the email to their listed address I got the dreaded "no address found" message. Passive aggression? Incompetence?

I'll call them Monday to see how they respond....

Grandvista 250 / saddle fix?
« on: August 07, 2019, 11:00:01 PM »
Has anyone customized the GV 250 seat to make it comfortable after removing that lumbar support? There is a piece of metal under the lumbar support that is no fun on long rides. That plus the plastic seat pan is humped so that presents a problem when trying to make a more flat surface to move around on to keep the buns from going numb.
