General Discussion / Sorry MIA
« on: December 06, 2017, 01:47:16 PM »
Sorry guys for being MIA. My wife Deb was recently diagnosed with Stage 3b breast cancer. It's been a whirlwind of daily tests and doctor visits the last few weeks
Good news is that it has not metastasized and spread to other parts of her body but is localized to her breast and lymph nodes. She'll get 6 chemo treatments 21 days apart followed with surgery and radiation. This all takes about a year. Our hopes are high and she is in good spirits considering. I'm the big cry baby as she appears stronger than me. Her faith in God is strong and she loves her oncology team. They're top hat. Please pray for her that she beats this.

General Discussion / Downsizing
« on: September 28, 2017, 04:51:16 PM »
After riding my SW to town yesterday to run to the bank and check out a job, I realized that my SW is the perfect scooter for me and like it more than any bike or scooter I have ever owned. The aftermarket Saddleman seat is extremely comfortable, has a perfect fit for my height and body size, has Goldwing like storage and is equally adept at putting around town or running at highway speeds on state highways. I find myself using the SW nearly all the time as the BW isn't being ridden as much. My SW is a keeper and will be my primary ride into my golden years. My wife has also hoped for a horse forever as we've been clearing a pasture and soon to fence off a section for a horse. So I told Deb I was going to sell the BW and use the funds for a horse for her. Being the pragmatic soul she is, she said not until you get a hearing aid. Dang aging thang.

General Discussion / Back in the saddle
« on: August 01, 2017, 12:50:51 PM »
Sure feels good getting back in the saddle after over a month out of it. Rode real slow yesterday in the slow lane nearly everywhere. I felt like I was savoring it like sipping on a nice Cab.

Oh, and guess which one I rode first?  You got it, the BW. I'm slowly learning Tom's mode, slow and fun. That's what makes scooters unique. Yep, slow-n-fun.

Technical | How To / Seat pads/covers
« on: June 13, 2017, 01:26:31 PM »
Summertime is here in Texas and man is it getting hot. Plumping your rear down on that all black vinyl scooter seat that's been heating in the sun can be downright painful. And then there's engine heat combined wafting through the seat cavity.

I found myself in a similar dilemma the other day and remembered my old wooden beaded seat cover. They look a bit uncomfortable but actually do a pretty good job over stock seat comfort. They're also much cooler as one is insulated from the nearly molten plastic seat cover. When riding I can actually feel a little bit of air under my backside and keeps it dry too.

What do you do about hot summer scooter seats that bake in the sun?

General Discussion / Napa Valley Vacation

In a couple of weeks Deb and I are headed out west to California, Oregon and Utah to visit grandkids and tour the wine country. I've never been north of San Francisco except for living in Sacramento once.

Thinking about hauling out the Kymco for some 2 up riding, particularly on the coast highway. This is not set in stone yet as I'd need to take the truck which is a Duramax diesel which gets at best, 18mpg. Our Honda CR-V gets about 30 so almost double the mileage. The CRV doesn't have a hitch and is a small 4 cylinder so not the best for towing.

And then there's the method of tow, do I tow my tilt bed motorcycle trailer like I have in the past or load in the back of the truck with ramps or....get one of those hitch mounted scooter carriers? Not worried about the hit on gas mileage with the trailer as it probably wouldn't change much with such a powerful motor. However it's just the hassle of wagging a trailer, finding parking spots and navigating busy tourist areas. I've never loaded or hauled a bike before in my truck so kinda wary of the ease and safety of doing? Those hitch mounted scooter carriers look like an easy and safe way of loading/unloading. Has anyone used one or what is your experience using ramps and loading in truck? Oh, and California has a speed limit of 55mph on all trailers so that factors into this decision too.

General Discussion / Son graduating UT Austin Friday
« on: May 17, 2017, 02:12:59 PM »
My oldest son, Christian (42) is graduating from UT Austin on Friday with a degree in RTF (Radio, Television, Film). Originally Deb and I were going to go but she's a bit under the weather as it appears it's just me attending graduation ceremonies from up our way. I have another son in Austin I'll be staying with and perhaps my son from San Diego will fly in too. I'm particularly proud of Christian as he went back to school as an old man compared to his contemporaries and maintained a 4.0 grade average and worked full time and paid his way 100%. Since Deb can't make it looks like I might take the SW for my 250 mile trek south on Friday. Bike is clean and ready.

Eye Candy | Videos and Pics / Which. Scooter Do You Ride Most?
« on: May 13, 2017, 04:43:01 PM »
For those blessed with more than one scooter; which one do you ride most and why? As some know I ride an 03 Honda Silverwing and despite the fact that I absolutely love my SW, the scooter I ride the most is my 05 Kymco BW 250. There's something irrestible about riding a smaller scooter that finds me going for the Kymco keys nearly every time. When I contemplated that I'd be riding over a hundred miles today , I considered that the SW was faster, more comfortable and has more onboard storage for clip board, overalls, flashlight etc., I still went for the Kymco.

I'm totally blown away by my BW. It's such a powerful little scooter as it can easily run down the road at 70, feeling very solid and planted at high speeds and is equally adept at in town riding at slower speeds. Think I found a true winner when I bought this 5 months ago.

Eye Candy | Videos and Pics / Einstein, Bagels and Kymco
« on: May 02, 2017, 01:22:17 AM »
What does Einstein, Bagels and Kymco have in common? Why, riding to Einstein's Bagels for coffee and you got it; Bagels. Sunday afternoon found me itchin to hit the highway to town and find some excuse to ride. I know, we need avocados and carrots at home. So I leave around 1:30 and pulled back into the house at 6 pm proud of my  accomplishments; 2 avocados and some carrots and stopped for a bagel and coffee. It was a cool day in the lower sixties and very windy but I was happy to get out and just like my distant cousins, hunter gatherers, brought home the cado.

General Discussion / 1500 mile Ozarks Ride Trip
« on: April 17, 2017, 12:56:07 PM »
This coming Thursday, I'm riding solo to Central Missouri to attend a motorcycle Meet and Greet sponsored by the Goldwing Owners Forum. I've attended these in the past when I had my Goldwing and just stuck around this bunch even after selling my GW and moving back to Maxiscooters. They're a good bunch and raze me some about riding scooters but it's all in good fun. They found out they can't outride me in the twisties on a scooter and have their respect but more, we've forged friendships like here on the Kymco forum. Would be cool to see some M&G's here too.

I've decided to ride solo even though I was invited to ride with a group of GW's from Texas. They'll ride mostly the super slap at 75-80 mph and even though my SW can easily keep up...It's not my cup of tea. I like a slower pace and stop along the way and take pics and look at the sights. Besides, we have a group ride planned for Saturday riding through the Ozarks.

My ride will take me up through SE Oklahoma, through Broken Bow, the Quachita Mountains and up through the Ozarks, thru Branson. May ride the Pig Trail again. On my return route I've booked a room in a stone lodge, the Queen Wilihmena Lodge at Queen Wilihmena State Park that sits on top of Rich Mountain. It recently underwent a major restoration that took over a year. It's a gorgeous setting with incredible vistas and a popular ride spot for motorcycling Talimena Drive that traverses from Mena,  Arkansas to Talihena, Oklahoma. Their restaurant at the lodge is incredible too for a great breakfast brunch. I plan to ride Talimena Drive on my way back.

I'll take lots of pics and keep this page updated as this trip unfolds.

General Discussion / Portable scooter shelters, garage, shop
« on: April 16, 2017, 02:04:28 PM »
Has anyone had any experience or known anyone who has purchased a portable fabric type garage, shop, bike shelter. Looking at a Rhino brand which is one of the heaviest weight covers in the industry and probably has a 10 years cover life. This model is 14x30x12' high. Need to replace my deteriorated Bike Barn for both my scooters and provide storage for my canoes and other things for my construction business. Shelter Logic makes one too that appears to have a shorter cover life that one can buy at Tractor Supply. They're not cheap as the model I'm looking at is about 1500.00 shipped but compared to a permanent metal bldg, much much cheaper. Any thoughts?

General Discussion / Oops, guess what I found?
« on: April 10, 2017, 01:54:57 PM »
Yesterday changed oil and filter and final drive fluid in the SW. Guess what showed up in the bottom of the oil pan.....After the job was completed?  Geez, what an idiot. Not sure Kymco uses these too but seems like most scooters do? This is the one behind the oil plug/nut. How critical is it not to have it installed or should I drain/save oil and install this little jewell?

People GT 300i / Hot Butt
« on: March 21, 2017, 01:27:48 PM »
Long rides on larger Maxiscooters like the Burgman and Silverwing are very comfortable and real mileage eaters as far as scooters go. Not as comfortable as the air ride suspension like my prior Goldwings but still acceptable for touring. I'd like to try a 300-400 mile ride on my Kymco but not until I figure out how to reduce the engine heat making my seat so hot. Thought about taking the seat box out and gluing foil insulation to the engine side or just fill it up with ice water.

General Discussion / Sunday Ride to Home Depot
« on: March 13, 2017, 12:53:00 PM »
Yesterday, I rode my recently repaired scooter to Home Depot which is about 35 miles. The BW had been out of commission for a few months as it was joy joy to finally get it out again and get to enjoy the full potential of the scooter. Some may recall I had an issue right from the very beginning when I bought it during the holiday as I couldn't get it over 60mph which was normal for my previous PS 200. But specs say a BW 250 can do about 83mph. On the way to town I could almost get to 80 but with the large oversized windshield I figured that was as good as I can expect and I was happy with that. I'm just glad I can now ride the 25 miles to town on our state highway and keep up with the traffic on this 70mph stretch without riding on the shoulder.

My first stop was Lowe's and Home Depot to look for doors for one of our construction projects and ran by La Madeline's for a cup of Joe as it was a brisk 45 degrees all day. Next went to Office Depot for a printer cartridge and took the long way home around our local lake, Lake Tyler.

The scooter is running perfect now and am so happy with it. Today, my helper is sick (my son) as I'll take the day off too and take the BW to town to meet my client to discuss our present remodel project for them and work in a bid too. I love conducting business from my scooter.
