General Discussion / Conundrum
« on: September 26, 2020, 07:27:52 PM »
I’ve noticed many people on this thread who
1. Bemoan the fact that scooter dealerships are closing.
2. Advise other riders to AVOID using the dealership for maintenance or non warranty repairs.
3. Complain that dealerships overcharge for work. (I’m not speaking of those who don’t make correct repairs. They deserve our scorn)

Just a few thoughts to consider.
1.Everyone wants to make a living and feed their families. And their job is usually their primary means of doing that. They MAY simply be trying to stay above water like the rest of us.

2. I don’t know how it is in the scooter/cycle industry. In the car industry nearly half of the gross profit now comes from service and parts. So, they NEED the money from service and parts to keep the doors open.

I’m not trying to convince a person to spend money they don’t have or to pay for work they could do themselves. But keep in mind that it’s impossible for the sales alone to keep the doors open.
As for the dealership, yes they should show APPRECIATION to the customers who spend their hard earned money by offering Accurate repairs and convenient service. And they should not try to make all their money from one Customer.
But as for us, we shouldn’t be surprised when a dealership closes when we never patronize them unless we 100% can’t avoid it.

Again, Just a few thoughts...

General Discussion / What I really meant was...
« on: February 03, 2019, 08:39:03 AM »
Yesterday while driving my mother and sister home from an activity , she mentioned a man who drove across country on his motorcycle. I then mentioned some recent comments from this group. She then said “you still communicate with those guys?” I know that what she REALLY MEANT WAS “I hope you’re not thinking about buying another scooter after what happened two years ago. I just got to where I can smile when you joke about your amputation . Please don’t scare me 1/2 to death. “ Yep, that’s what that “innocent “ question meant. [emoji23][emoji23]

General Discussion / Nostalgic Moment
« on: August 29, 2018, 02:31:18 AM »
This morning I was driving to work , and I noticed a “motorcycle “ ahead of me in the right lane riding at a good highway speed. Nothing unusual . As I pass him in my car safely in the left lane , (I was running late [emoji4][emoji4]), I noticed that it was a large scooter. I immediately felt nostalgic remembering how I rode that exact same route over two years ago. Man I was jealous of him. Family is still PETRIFIED of me getting another one. As of now, finances wouldn’t allow it anyway. So they can rest easy for now. But one day..... hmmm... Well, a guy can still dream. Can’t he?

General Discussion / Had a “flat tire”
« on: January 26, 2018, 03:26:20 AM »
Hello guys. I REALLY appreciate you all allowing me to share my NON SCOOTER stories since I’m no longer riding since my accident . (Still hoping to do so again one day) . Last week I had a “flat left tire”. (I BROKE MY PROSTHETIC FOOT) . I  was disgusted because it was only 7 months old. But like a Scooter tire, high mileage and aggressive use wears them out quickly. I read the “spec table “ and found that while my tire has a 3 year warranty, my tire was rated for 2 MILLION “load cycles “. Well, I bought a pedometer to keep track of my walking and found that between walking around at work and walking for exercise and other activities after work, I average around a little over 10,000 steps per day! At that rate, I reach my 2 million load cycles in 200 DAYs,!!

I also read that I need to remove the cover and INSPECT it monthly for signs of de lamination which is a sign of imminent catastrophic failure. ( I compare it to sidewall cracks in a tire) .
I also need to me mindful to not exceed the “load rating “of 220 pounds for more than a short distance. I weigh 173. So carrying a battery , case of oil, 5 gal bucket of waste anti freeze etc. shortens the life.

Also, as with tires, “ aggressive use” (jogging/running/hiking on rough nature trails,) shortens the life span of my “tire”.

I feel like a piece of machinery. [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

General Discussion / Tough guy. Tough Scooter.
« on: December 24, 2017, 01:44:51 AM »
A couple of nights ago I stopped by a Waffle House near my home around 1:00AM. I noticed a Scooter parked outside. The owner and I were leaving about the same time. His Scooter was a 49cc (Wolf, I think ) purchased from one of our local Scooter dealers. I assumed he was only a couple of miles from home. But he told me where he lived. And he was OVER 30 miles  from home. At least 25 of those miles would be traveled on a rural two lane stretch of US 90. Traffic is not too heavy at that hour. But it’s usually moving at 60, 70, 75 mph. Anyway, I found that he had already traveled about 15 miles or so through town.

Anyway, that was his REGULAR mode of transportation to work in Tallahassee , Fl and back to The next City of Monticello, Fl. He stated that he traveled at speeds of up to 45 (I think he has a wildly optimistic speedometer) . He stated that he had a little over an hour or so remaining. Waffle House was his regular stop off if he needed a break.
I could never see myself riding OVER 45 miles ONE WAY DAILY on a 49 cc Scooter. Nor can I see a 49 cc Scooter surviving any length of time operated under those conditions. But I admire both him AND the Scooter for being determined to work day after day even though it’s a tough trip. Most guys would simply make an excuse as to why they can’t work because they don’t have suitable transportation to travel that far.

My only criticism... He had NO HELMET on because he didn’t feel he needed it traveling that slow . I told him that even 35-40 mph can do a lot of damage to the human body.

General Discussion / Good news/bad news
« on: March 06, 2017, 03:33:42 AM »
Good news: I have an 85 year old mother, 3 older brothers, and 3 older sisters who have been with me through my entire ordeal of my accident, amputation, and subsequent recovery. And they love me very much and have become VERY protective of their "baby brother " and his safety.

Bad news: see above [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

Every so often to test the waters, I imply that I'm not very fearful of getting on a scooter again, and I see them nearly STOP BREATHING. So I'll just leave it alone for now. Yes, at age 52 I'm very much old enough to make my own decision in this matter. However, I'm also smart and considerate enough to remember the look in my oldest brother's eyes, the fatigue in my middle sister's face, and the sight of my mother preparing and serving 3 meals a day for me. They were the ones who were there daily from day one because they live here.

Therefore, I'll put any plans fir riding again on hold until such a time that the very thought of me riding anything on two wheels other than a BICYCLE no longer causes them to stop breathing. Lol.

But given the situations where I see people who have NO ONE to care about them, I'll choose my situation any day.

Just thinking and sharing. My blessings outweigh my burdens by a WIDE MARGIN!

General Discussion / Something weird.
« on: March 01, 2017, 06:27:54 AM »
I recently responded to a comment to a on my thread about my accident . It seemed to post normally. But on the main page a new thread opened with my name at the head which said "classical porn videos " .  I deleted my comment but the "new" heading is still there . I suspect that someone may be trying to hack my post.

Please let me know if ANYTHING shows up on here that seems out of character for me. Rest assured that I did not and will not post any porn or even near porn on this or ANY other page.

Someone once hacked my aol account and sent some pornographic e mail in my name. Thankfully the recipient (a fellow Christian sister) knew that it was out of my character. So she informed me, and I was able to get it removed by aol.

PEOPLE ARE SICK!

General Discussion / No regrets (sort of)
« on: January 04, 2017, 07:04:21 AM »
After my accident which resulted in a below knee amputation of my left leg, many well meaning friends have remarked "I bet you with you'd never gotten that scooter." To which I usually respond "No, I can't really say that." Truth is, those six months of riding were some of the most enjoyable times of my life. While riding I discovered so many things, traveled so many back roads, and experienced things that I would never have experienced in my car. In fact, now I sometimes still take the "long way" home from various places even though I'm in my car.

So when they ask me about regrets, I simply say that I regret having the accident. I regret NOT paying attention to where I was going on that night. I regret losing my leg. But I do NOT regret the experience of owning and riding a scooter. Truth is, life is FULL of unexpected twists and turns. But we persevere. We learn. And we keep moving.

THAT'S LIFE!!
Will I ever ride again? If it was only me to consider, the answer would be a definite YES! But life isn't just about me. My family who stood by (and continue to stand by) my side just isn't there yet. My 85 year old mother says she'll accept my choice. But I see the look in her eyes which says "please don't." My out of town siblings could accept it. But my sisters and brother who walked me through the process daily have JUST gotten to the place where they can joke about my recent condition. At this point, I wouldn't be able to enjoy riding for fear of THEIR fear. So, I'll wait. If it's meant to be, it will be.

But I like the fact that they will NOT nor will they allow others to speak words of negativity. Anyway, if I had not gotten that scooter, I would never have met you guys.

Well, that's my philosophical musing for today. Be blessed everyone!

General Discussion / Wishing everyone a belated Happy New Year
« on: January 04, 2017, 06:35:43 AM »
Well, 2016 has passed and I must say that it was an adventure. But Thank God WE made it!!!! There were ups and downs, good times and bad times. But here we are.

For me, 2016 began with me purchasing a 2009 Xciting 250. At midpoint I traded it for a 2013 Yamaha Majesty. And I THOROUGHLY enjoyed myself. Unfortunately, July 3 changed all that with my accident which cost me part of my left leg. BUT I MADE IT!!

The last half of 2016 was filled with more LOVE and SUPPORT from family, friends, and KYMCO RIDERS than I could have ever imagined. 2016 Ended with me having been fitted with a prosthetic leg and having RETURNED TO WORK.
So all in all it was a SUCCESSFUL year.

Having said all that. HAPPY NEW YEAR to you all!!!

Xciting 250 / Xciting repair manual
« on: October 04, 2016, 05:08:48 AM »
I have a Repair Manuel for a Kymco Xciting 250 and 500. I bought it when I had my Xciting 250. It covers both the carbureted and fuel injected models. If anyone wants it, I'll send it to you for simply what it costs to ship it.

General Discussion / "The Price is Right" gives away scooters
« on: August 16, 2016, 03:30:10 PM »
During my unexpected "extended vacation", I've been watching A LOT of television. One of those shows is "The Price is Right " . Since I've been watching it, it seems that at least once or twice a week one of the prizes is a scooter or pair of scooters. The first few times I'd turn away because I didn't want to see a scooter since I can't ride one anymore for a while, maybe never. But eventually I made myself pay attention . I was expecting the scooter to be a Chinese 50cc brand. But to my surprise it was a Burgman 200. Not sure what the other brands were . But it was nice to see them.

I saw more country road capable scooters advertised on "The Price is Right" in one month, than I've seen advertised anywhere else in my entire lifetime!

General Discussion / Wear your gear.
« on: July 23, 2016, 07:22:44 PM »
As you all know, I was involved in a terrible accident which ultimately resulted in my left leg being amputated. As bad as that was, it could have been MUCH WORSE. The ONLY semi significant damage was on my chin where the strap evidently dug in and caused a cut requiring only TWO stitches. And some minor cuts which required no stitches, on the lower thigh portion of the damaged leg. I can only imagine what my helmet hit that jarred it so badly that the straps cut into my chin. I am certain that it was something that my HEAD would have hit otherwise. Also, there was some VERY MINOR road rash on my stomach. In fact, I can't even feel it. I just saw the superficial scratches.
My co workers and even my boss would incessantly tease me for wearing a full faced helmet and a riding jacket for "just a scooter " . In fact, my boss had teased me only a day earlier.  When I spoke to him after the accident, he told me that he was SOOOOOO glad that I did NOT listen to him.
In Panama City, it appeared that at least 3/4 of the motorcycle riders had NO helmet and were wearing short sleeves or a tank top. But I resisted the temptation to "fit in" . As a result, I am alive and un damaged other than the leg. They make prosthetic legs. But they don't make prosthetic brains yet. Lol.

WEAR YOUR PROTECTIVE GEAR! I'm a believer. I don't know if I'll ever ride again or not. But IF I do, you can be certain that I'll be wearing my protective gear.

General Discussion / Had a bad accident
« on: July 04, 2016, 03:44:06 PM »
As I type this, I am in icu in a hospital in Panama City Florida. Compound fracture on left leg. In pain[emoji26][emoji24][emoji16], but very much alive. Thankfully I was wearing my helmet and Riding jacket. So the damage was confined to the leg. Better to worry about the outcome on a leg than a head or chest injury. . Keep me in your prayers [emoji1488][emoji1488][emoji1488]

General Discussion / Surreal
« on: June 25, 2016, 04:20:07 PM »
Surreal experience: seeing my old scooter for sale on the website of the place where you traded it with an asking price more than double what they gave me on a trade. They didn't even fix the body damage where I dropped it. Actually it's kind of satisfying because it's the FIRST vehicle of ANY KIND that was good enough to sell after I'd gotten finished with it. 😂😂😂😂😂. And I know that the  next owner will get a good scooter. (They'd be crazy to pay that much though) . And I now have what I want.
