Technical | How To / AK550 slight howl
« on: October 28, 2023, 05:53:35 PM »
I got 27xx miles on my AK now, so I will be bringing to my dealer for 3k service shortly. I went for a ride yesterday, first in several weeks

I could hear a howl that changed pitch with speed, not a wind howl, cause it changed with engine speed, but only under maintenance throttle, it wasn't there under acceleration or deceleration

I can hear it barely with my helmet on, and if I wore earplugs like a lot of riders, I wouldn't have heard it at all

Thoughts?   at first I thought I might have a bearing going, but I am not familiar with cvt transmissions and what goes on inside them

For Sale / WTB K-Pipe Front Left Turn Signal(all years)

I really only need the lense & screws. however I will take it any way I can get it, short of buying a whole parts bike, and I might even consider that if it is within pickup range

General Discussion / Pulling a trailer with an AK550?
« on: August 24, 2023, 09:04:45 PM »
just wondering. I don't particularly care for most of the luggage available for the AK, but more than that, if I go touring, I'd like more cargo space

General Discussion / Bike Week
« on: June 15, 2023, 04:39:41 PM »
Laconia's 100th. I live about 15 miles southeast. I can hear the rumble of one of the primary routes in. about 3/4 mile away as the crow flies. Normal traffic patterns don't apply when running regular errands. Gas stations are clogged with bikes. In the past, I have done my best to avoid Laconia during bike week, but sometimes unavoidable, I have had to testify as expert witness at the superior court in Laconia, an old building, no AC, windows open during bike week, glad they weren't jury trials, the judge was forever asking me to speak louder, it was like yelling at my co-workers when doing land survey field work.

However, now I'm retired, and thinkin of going to Laconia on my K-Pipe.

Side By Side / Belt Wear
« on: May 27, 2023, 12:44:04 AM »
when do you replace the belt?

at this point, my 2015 UXV450i has endured 7 seasons of logging duty, 4 seasons of snowplowing, high speed on road use, towing a 990lb backhoe, then towing it offroad, here and there thru pastures and woodlands

I noticed today when returning home from my annual fluid replace/inspect, tuneup and a frame repair as well (snow plowing beats the crap out of vehicles) my top speed is down to 44-45 from 49-50 when new

still does all the low gear work with no problem, and no plans to replace the belt yet, just wondering how far to ya'll let your belts wear before replacement, or do you just do it routinely by mileage/hours

Technical | How To / keyless fob questions
« on: May 22, 2023, 07:55:08 PM »
situation: AK550 brand new fully charged battery that reads 12.7 volts

does not recognize the fob?  dead battery in the fob? bike is barely 9 months old

I will put a new CR2450 battery in the fob, do I have to push any reset buttons, or pair with the bike?  or just put the battery in, everything else will take care of itself?

I dislike keyless vehicles immensely.

General Discussion / first ride of the year on my K-Pipe
« on: May 15, 2023, 08:34:36 PM »
been sitting since November, not on a battery tender, still enuf juice to dimly light the instrument cluster & lights.
all it took was 3 kicks with the choke on, started right up, after that, just one kick, put about 40 miles on it. and plugged into my battery tender when I got home, hopefully it will take and hold a charge....... Dead battery in my Tacoma, replaced free by NAPA, my AK has a dead battery too.

General Discussion / keyless ignition bit me today
« on: April 13, 2023, 10:53:30 PM »
I was led to believe that I had to have my fob within 5-6, maybe 10 feet from my AK550 to work, Nooooooo, I left my fob on my dresser, in the house 100 feet away, maybe a little more, scooter started and I rode away on some errands, Had to call my GF and have her bring me my fob

I just soon have a key as something 10 times as big that can leave you stranded

General Discussion / my new toy NSR
« on: February 06, 2023, 12:36:14 AM »
I was debating buying a bandsaw mill, but then I'd need a tractor, and now the proposition gets too expensive for a little backyard milling. So I settled for a new 94cc Husqvarna chainsaw (395XP) and a Granberg Alaskan chainsaw mill. I got 2 sets of rails, so I will be able to make slabs up to 20ft long. and the 36" (outside dimension) mill will let me make slabs up to 34" wide. I have some white pine logs that will test the limits, planning on making some outdoor furniture
