Technical | How To / Should I buy a motorcycle lift?
« on: October 28, 2017, 01:46:21 PM »
I like working on my equipment, but I hate laying on my back/side to do so! I have run across a good deal at Harbor Freight on a motorcycle lift for 69 bucks. Do any of yall use anything like this? Any thoughts. It only lifts up to 17 inches so I dont know if it will really help a lot. I will include the link below;

Eye Candy | Videos and Pics / My recent ride to Mount Mitchell
« on: October 16, 2017, 01:41:14 AM »
Yesterday morning I left home at 6 AM from Woodstock, Ga. and headed for Mount Mitchell, NC. I returned home after riding 545 miles at 7 PM. I rode around 150 miles on the Blue Ridge Parkway. I LOVE THAT ROAD! I saw a lot of beautiful scenery and it was a great short adventure. The Helix performed flawlessly the whole trip. Not a hint of trouble. I will attempt to upload some photos. I have given up for now uploading photos. Here's the easy way;

General Discussion / The real cost of new car fuel economy
« on: October 08, 2017, 01:31:51 PM »
I recently was in the market for a new car. It seems that many auto makers have changed to smaller engines, turbo-chargers, and CVT transmissions in order to get an extra couple of miles per gallon. I do not like this trend because;

1. Even though the mpg is better, you pay more for premium so the cost to operate is more.

2. Turbos add more heat and complexity to the system and probably will cost more to maintain.

3. My mechanic says the CVT transmissions are not as reliable as the previous types. So a rebuild/replace is likely down   the road.

In short, the cost to own and maintain these new vehicles is FAR HIGHER than the older ones. As for us, we purchased a well maintained low mileage 2012 with a 6-speed tranny and a 87 octane fuel-injected V-6. Like many things, seems like the older ones are better.  ;) ;) ;)

Technical | How To / Variator tool
« on: September 12, 2017, 11:43:59 PM »
Can anyone tell me where I can get a tool to hold my variator in place? I have a tool to hold my clutch, but I have not come up with a satisfactory tool to hold my variator securely while I torque it with my wrench.

General Discussion / I am stumped!
« on: May 08, 2017, 01:09:41 AM »
My 93 Helix, which is a wonderful machine, has an intermittent problem I cannot seem to get diagnosed. I ride this bike as a commuter so it is ridden practically every day. Sometimes when I start, and other times while I am riding, the scooter will loose about 20% of its power. After a while the power will suddenly come back to 100% and stay that way and sometimes will cut back again.  As I have stated, it is intermittent so there is no pattern to it. It does not seem to run rough. Just loss of power. I have loosened my fuel cap, changed and checked the spark plug, changed the fuel filter, checked the fuel lines, inspected my air filter and "puke tube." It starts easily every time and does not smoke or use oil. The idle is smooth and even.  When it cuts in and out, it is abrupt and very apparent. It will still cruise at speed but when the power is down, it really slows the acceleration and hill climbing. Any ideas anyone? I do not want to start throwing unnecessary parts at this thing.

General Discussion / Anyone had a fuel pump fail?
« on: April 30, 2017, 11:33:41 PM »
Have any of you folks had a fuel pump fail, and if so, what were the symptoms. Did it go out all at once or was it an intermittent problem first?

General Discussion / Why do we do this?
« on: March 08, 2017, 01:47:08 AM »
I have noticed a trend across all forums and all subjects.  A poster will ask "which is better A or B?"
Some answer that D is better. Some answer that Y is better etc.  Few answer A or B. In the end, the poster has to ask himself "NOW what is better A,B,D, or Y ?" I hate that. AND I DO IT!  :-[

General Discussion / Which front tire should I get?
« on: February 26, 2017, 04:21:55 AM »
I have narrowed down the choices for a front tire for my Honda Helix to the ones in the previous poll. I would really appreciate ya'lls  input. Wet weather performance is very important to me. I ride all year in practically all condition.

General Discussion / Should I buy Michelin City Grips?
« on: February 25, 2017, 11:12:59 PM »
Its getting time for me to replace the front tire on my trusty Honda Helix. The OEM Bridgestones are expensive and I know Michelin has a reputation for producing a quality product. I have found a size of Michelin City Grip front tires that will work on my scoot. Are they a reasonably safe tire to ride on the front? How is the longevity? Wet road performance? My Helix will top out at about 75 MPH and I sometimes cruise at 70 for extended periods. I ride it year round in all but the most insane weather. Thanks for any input you experienced folks could give me. I am kind of on the fence here.

Technical | How To / Must have tool for heating stubborn bolts
« on: February 23, 2017, 10:50:09 PM »
I purchased a heat gun for about 11 bucks and it has paid for itself many times over! It is simpler to use than a torch, and it is cheap! Just thought I would put it out here in case it could help someone.

Technical | How To / Front wheel shimmy
« on: February 08, 2017, 11:49:34 PM »
When I let go of the bars of my Honda Helix there is a shimmy between 25 and 40 mph. The bars do not shake before 25 and after I hit around 40 to 45 mph it smooths out.  Any ideas? (Other than to not take my hand off the bars!) The rim appears to be true and the wheel bearings roll smooth and do not feel loose to the hand.
