General Discussion / Re: London police ramming "moped bandits"
« on: November 25, 2018, 06:43:14 PM »
There's been big problems in the UK with motorcycles/moped becoming the vehicle of choice for robbery and muggings. This has been facilitated in no small part by the fact that our Police have always struggled to pursue them with cars, though we do have effective motorcycle Police who just push them off, and have done for years.

We don't worry so much about our Police going too far in this country - they're quite restrained compared to other countries and we largely trust them.

It's a good thing. After a couple of years of knocking them off, the message will get through that bikes are no longer an untouchable tool, as it hurts the image of all of us riding them.

Well said, Viper. Unarmed police have to do something to get the message across to these jerks. This is a very good and reasonable solution.

Like GLV55 said whotta day! You definitely were assigned a mission that day! GLV55, Iknow your heart was in the right place but more laws?
Good point, CB. I've just seen so many accidents involving the elderly, including my mother-in-law, that there needs to be a cut-off somewhere. Maybe there needs to be a big effort to educate the children of those seniors about when to take away the keys and how to approach the subject, maybe some kind of a counselor to facilitate the process.

Wow, that's a bad day! Just grateful you weren't involved in either accident.

I'm getting older, too, so I get it, but past a certain age (let someone else figure that one out) people should have to take a driving test every year in order to renew their license. My mother-in-law was "dating" another elderly gentleman at her assisted living, and he was driving her to the store, etc. Well, a month later we found out that he had lost his license a year earlier, and COULD NOT FEEL HIS FEET!! He didn't know which pedal he was stepping on and couldn't feel how much pressure he was putting on the pedals, either. His family KNEW he was driving and didn't care, they just let him do it because it was "too much trouble" to confront him and take his keys away. We moved her to another facility, then heard that about 6 months later this guy had run into the side of a building because he thought he was stepping on the brake pedal.  >:(

Time to change the laws!!
Be safe out there!

General Discussion / Re: I gotta learn more about American cars

Too true!
For months I was thinking it was a Ford truck.
My son said, "no Dad, it's a Chevy for Pete's sake! "
Next time I drove it, I looked looked down at the emblem on the steering wheel.  Humph!
Most days I can remember I've a Chevy out there in the driveway.
For over 25 yrs I drove a red, extended cab, 8' bed, Chevy for the county. Loved that truck...rode soft as a Buick.
Mine rides like a friggin chuckwagon. Must be the color?
Stig
It has to be the color because my F150 is bright red and it is a fine ride. And we all know that red goes faster!😁

Well there's your problem right there... you only have experience with GM products.  No wonder you're confused! Go get yourself a good American Ford F-150 😉

Welcome to the club, George. Glad he's safe, though. Sooner or later we all experience the same thing to one extent or another.

General Discussion / Re: DO you really dislike shifting?
« on: July 10, 2018, 09:16:19 PM »
Hmmm... That's a tough question.
Personally, I like the idea of having that one less thing on which to concentrate. I try to ride defensively, paying a certain amount of attention to what's on the road around me, and not having to shift removes one more thing from the equation, no matter how habitual or subconsciously it's done. Twist and go just simplifies things, I suppose.
I will second everything said here - sums it up perfectly for me.

(Nice time to ponder things - like that lucky member who had a long career teaching music to youngsters. Teaching kids is a terrifically important job. Right up there with the military, the clergy, medicos, and first responders, in my book.)

Afterwards....You've the whole day to do some serious goofing off!

Stig
Thanks for the plug, Stig! Wish a lot more people felt this way! Coming from you, I feel honored.
