Hi All i looked at the wiring diagram for both 250 and 500 and the speedo and odometer seem to go to the same place and with the same coloured wires however there is a difference between the two as i can physically see ironically its not the cables you would automatically think of.

i truggles to not only to understand the diagrams but also to identify the colors as some have faded after 10 years or is covered in crap.  if there was an easy fix to this issue i would appreciate it if anyone could tell me.

Also is it normal to reprogram an instrument cluster to increase or decrease KM or miles.  surely if it was so common and way to do owners would be shaving 10,000s of miles off scooters when they come to sell.

Hi again thanks for the information.  I actually have no idea what this tool looks like, is there any chance of providing a link or an image so that I have some sort of idea many many thanks

i dont suppose you would happen to know which wire it is???  do i literally have to rip it out and plug it into the correct one???  what is the tool actually called I may have to look at amazon or the local DIY /electrical store.  If i get it working i need to do 40,000km in 11 months :(   if the km/miles done data is stored in the instrument panel than any replacement would be a waste of time as it would never show the correct information unless by a miracle it you buy one with exactly the same mileage/km.

hi everyone,

i bought a 250 xcting donor bike and its taken me a long time to get the parts off and work on my 500cc.  its winter here and its cold and raining which is very unlike spain.  I have a little good news a a bit of bad news.  the second hand instrument panel is now in my 500cc and is reading temperature, fuel and lights correctly   HOWEVER it gets worse,  firstly no revs are displayed as it simply does not move nor does the speedometer which stays on zero.  BUT what really shocked me is that the scooter i bought the 250cc has 16000km on it my bike has 55000km and when its plugged in the new instrument panel shows 16,000km.

Im very surprised and i assumed it would simply talk to the 500cc CPU and display what is stored on the 500cc but this does not seem to be that case.   does anyone have any thoughts on how i can get these three items working especially the speedometer and show the 550000 km as this will be needed to pass the vehicle inspections and thus keep it road worthing.

I genuinely thought that like others have suggested an easy swap of parts would be a quick and easy solution but this does not seem to be the case.

Please can anyone  help???

thanks in advance

Xciting 500 / Re: Older Xcting body work on a newer model
« on: November 26, 2019, 10:30:10 PM »
The bike i have is a 500cc ri model from 2009 and the one i want to buy is from 2005 250cc and may be carbureted

its the instrument cluster good seat and rear wheel that im interested in however the body panels will be great as all my screw points have broken over the years and in the spanish heat.

im not sure what to do about the big hole in the older body work where the mirrors pop out of.  I want to keep the mirrors on the handle bars.

Xciting 500 / Older Xcting body work on a newer model

Hi all, I think i can solve my instrument cluster problem buy buying and entire 250 scooter and using its parts for my 500.   I noticed that the body work is not only a nice black but in better condition than my white one.  I was thinking of swapping the panels as they look better and have the original screw fix points still undamaged.  The only issue is that the bike im looking at getting is the mark 1 model with the mirrors on the panel and mines is the newer type with the mirror in the handle bars.  I assume that taking the mirrors off the 250 will not be an issue however it will leave a hole in the body work.  Can anyone advice if they have done this as well and its possible to do.  Also is there an aftermarket part you can buy that plugs up this hole or covers it.   Im doing all of this to replace my broken instrument panel but ill also get a new re-upholstered seat and hopefully i can use the wheels and tyres also (assuming they are the same size).   I can then also cannibalize parts from the 250 and the scrap the motor and chassis so that it is taken off the road permanently.
Can anyone assure me that the cluster to ecu plugs are the same for both models and if anyone knows of a link in ebay or amazzon that will cure the hole in the bodywork issue than i would be extremely grateful.  Also are the exhaust the same?? they look identilcal in size but this is not to say that the internals will be the same as one might be designed for a 250cc motor and the other for the more powerful 500.
I need to decide and make the purchase very soon so any information and advice would be extremely appreciated.  the bike i have is a 500cc ri model from 2009 and the one i want to buy is from 2005 250cc and may be carbureted.   my main concern obviously ios that the instrument panel is plug and play and that it will work on both models.
many thanks in advance

Hi Everyone for your continued support and advice is so much appreciated.  Everyone thinks i should throw away the scooter as its old and  has spent its life outside so the plastics are not in great shape however I love this bike, I ride around all of spain on it and unlike a motorbike i want two hand brakes and don't want to do anything with my feet.   I tried a cruiser the other day and my four limbs were doing so much during traffic up hill that i almost ran out of legs to put on the ground and nearly ended up on my face.

Also coming off a maxi scooter to a cruiser you realise you cant see anything as you are so low.  with the kymco i can easily see over normal and sports cars.

I have a very urgent question if anyone can help me I may have an oportunity to buy an entire donor bike BUT it is a 250cc.  Apart from the color are the connections then same and is it likely to work.   I like this option as I get Panels new seat, spare parts etc and can keep the kymco going for a few years yet.

Id love another maxi scooter but they are so expensive new and the honda dcts are very overprices as wells as the yamaha.  I want more that 500cc plus 2 cylinders.  the kymco 550 second hand is still over €8000 over here.

Please of anyone knows is a 250cc panel has the same connections as a 500cc please do let me know also the 250cc is a mark I and i have the mark II 500.

many thanks again to everyone, European prices are alot higher than US prices and I dont thing the scooter is now worth anything except of course its worth alot to me :)

Hi Everyone has anyone know if an aftermarket speedometer/odometer Instrument panel has every been rewired for the Xciting 500???  is there a universal adapter available that takes the long thin input socket that splits it into 3 or 4 sections.   Ive seen ones in amazon that does everything needed and are digital and better than the original analogue dials.

Hi Ive started to put it back together again and will keep it going.  As I mentioned before it does have to go through technical inspection which it will not pass so that might be the end of the scooter.   I guess 10 years of life is very good for a cheap scoot.   Ive got GPS on my phone etc how to be honest id rather the smaller bicycle odometer option.  Ive got a garmin for the car but going 80mph through a city intersection it always seemed to be a fraction of a second too slow which means that turnings are missed.   Even with my adroid apps you have to take the maps and everything else with a pinch of salt plus the speedo does not change instantly on mine its every say 5 seconds.   We have many speed cameras and radar traps!!!!

will keep an eye out for breakers specialising in bikes in spain but people usually buy new all the time as they get it on credit (as no one here has any money) also the whole priciple of a scooter means that a person wants to be on 2 wheels without any hassle and not many riders will a full A licence bothers with a 500cc scooter.  they all get BMW GS 1200 which they ride for the summer and garage for the rest of the year 3000km a year on smooth highway,  a complete waste of €18000.    Style over substance!!!

Im going to start to put the bike together as Ive tried everything with regards to the cables.   A replaycement of the instrument panel is the solution i think as everything else seems ok.  Thanks Crossbolts Ive tried with the wiring diagram and used its as much as I could but it was difficult as although its 90% naked its still very hard to physically follow the cables.

With regards to obtaining a new panel is that actually possible??? are they still being sold new by kymco???   second hand is a risk PLUS Im looking for a bike being broken up near enough for me to buy as i its likely to be damaged so would like to see that it works before purchase.

The issue about simply riding it is that the scooter does get inspected annually,  the next one i believe is is feb 2020,  so at least i have some time.   I guess it was a shot in the dark regarding an aftermarket panel!!!!!!

I did have a thought when I was in a huge supermarket we have in spain (like wallmart in the US)   is it possible to use a bicicle speedo and odometer instead so that I would have at least an ideal when the fuel will run out?????

Can they take 70mph 80mph.???   I was going to buy a wireless one but it mentioned that it was not to be used with an electric bike as the batteries/electric motor effects that wireless connection,  so was thinking of buying a wired one.   Does anyone know if this is has been done before.

BTW as I mentioned before during inspection the bike has to be 100% original or have certificated homologated parts to pass.   Immisions is getting tricky as well.   I have to do the car as well and they have started to plug in the car to their diagnistics computer which is unfortunate as I always erase the error codes whilst waiting for my turn !!!!! LOL   I think luckly my car is old enough for them not to bother, but immissions test is getting harder.  Luckly I have a petrol car not diesel,  so alot cleaner.

hi im in 10 mins from gibraltar near the tarifa on the southern end of europe, we can see africa from our window.   the fuses are good and even changed them.  the lights and indicators all work.  EVERY thing on the bike is hot as its like hells at the moment.   the only thing i can think of are the batteries that get hot after 18 months and warp,  due to the extreme heat and cold in winters we get through bateries and even car bateries faster than say when i was un the UK.    As far as Im aware apart from the instrument panel all the electrics work albeit its the lights horn and starter motor/ignition.

Is there an after market panel that can be bought from say Amazon or ebay that will take the Kymcos unique cable cluster and plug??  something like a universal panel for a motorbike.   Do you know if the kymco shares its plug with any other manufacturer or an adapter can be bought???  i cant see myself find a working second hand one, its 10 years old and they were not a super seller in Europe.

People with full motorbike licences never tended to buy big scooters until the Yamaha came out and DCT.   The 850 gilera/aprillia was too expensive.

Hi CrossBolt Im still trying to work out the wiring diagram its my first time and im not great with electrics!!!!  one thing that I need to mention, it was my wife who spotted it first.  At the back of the instrument panel two of the four round copper covers that protects the metal cables that are wrapped up tightly had a burning smell.    Or at least I think thats what it was.  My wife picked it up immediately but as ive been following trucks for 30 years so my sense of smell and hearing has diminished incredibly.

May I please had your thoughts of how to resolve the problem IF its the instrument panel has suffered from an electrical surge and possibly some of it has been damaged.  Is there anything obvious that I can visually see???  Due to the unique plug that connects the panel to the ECU is it possible to take this instrument to an electrical engineer who (the only person I had in mind) fixed my TV when the LCD blew.

Im going to continue to work on the wiring but the heat here limits the time to a few hours in the morning and due to work /family comitments this is taking a very very long time to resolve.   Here in spain August is a month everyone takes off for holidays and again taking to a mechanic is not an option.   The irony is that mechanically the scooter is running as good as ever.  its obviously a specific issue which i doubt a teenage apprentice will have any idea  to resolve.

Ill be honest with you crossbolt, none of the above made any sence and its not like i dont understand english Im from London!!!  Please can you break it down a bit thanks.

hi i have a downloaded copy of the workshop manual it is however in Black and white and although Ive taken a pick with the lap top i usually look at it on my kindle which is more portable and easier to zoom in.  It does however resemble chinese noodles so if there are any main cables i should be looking at i would appreciate the advice.

You very kindly sent me your colour one for your Bike,  Im assuming the basic would be the same,  if you could point a few indicators on where to look first!!!!

Is it possible that the instrument cluster has gone bad?? OR do you think this may have something to do with the speedo sensor??  i know im grasping at straws but my wife is not impressed that my skeleton of my scooter is blocking the front door with most of it in various parts of the house including but not exclusively the garage!!!

Ive attached an alwful photo of what I have, I cant seem to seperate an individual page from the pdf to upload it
