Title: rubbing/whining sound when first accelerating
Post by: NealE on May 26, 2017, 02:11:23 PM
hi, anyone ever hear a rubbing/whining like sound(im mechanically challenged when it comes to motors) when first accelerating? The sound comes from the back almost near the rear tire so I don't know if its transmission or anything to do with the throttle. It hppens more when i start off slow. it happens after its warmed up too. its very inconsistent which makes difficult to describe. Can i rev the engine when its on the center stand to record the noise?
thanks

It does it on the centerstand? Is it like a howling sound? How many miles on it?

i havent tried it on the centerstand yet, no howling more of a whine...maybe grind, 5300 miles, had the 4k service done at 3700 miles.

Can't say I've heard a whinning noise but mine did make a howling noise at times but went away after some miles. I had to go back a couple of times until they fixed and oil seal leak that was getting rear gear oil in the CVT case. Seems they finally fixed it as when I took it apart to inspect for the 4K service it was dry in there. They are fairly noisy bikes I think. I'd be curious if you can duplicate it on the stand and are able to record it.

Clutch pad noise?
New scooter owners can get flummoxed over all the weird noises a scooter is capable of. Rollers clacking at idle got me concerned....
Some scooters complain (noise, judder, etc.) if rider tries to ease away from a stop. They like to be punched a bit with some throttle to get the clutch locked up quickly.

(IMHO --Want really smooth take-offs - buy something with a hand clutch lever and foot gear changer!)

Where are you located?

Whining noise coming the rear, near the rear wheel usually is from the gears in the final reduction case. However, this happens mostly on deceleration, especially from higher speeds. When the engine is loading the gears, the teeth are worn in with each other for load and don't produce much, if any sound, as you described. BUT when the rear wheel is reverse loading the gears (deceleration), it will normally produce a "whining" noise. This is normal. Have you checked the oil level in the final reduction gear case? Are you using GL 5 75w up to 140, synthetic, preferably. Might be a good idea to remove the CVT cover and inspect the belt and sheaves for wear. If all is good there, then take a look at the clutch. Good luck and keep us posted as to what you come up with.

Hi guys, sorry for about the delay. Im located in Philly area. Im going to try to record the noise this weekend. Its only happens when i start off and accelerating.  it happens more when starting off slow verse a quick punch. it then stops around 15-20mph. Does it need to be oiled or anything? I have to schedule my one year maintenance too so i hope that will fix it. i have close to 6K miles so i don't know if thats considered new or not.

The clutch engages/disengages about 16 mph, can't say I've noticed any unusual other than when my belt used to slip before they fixed the oil leak that was causing it. I am curious if they find anything looking at it. I just turned 5,000 miles on mine yesterday.

The flapping kinda noise? I think pulling the CVT cover to see if the belt has something on it flapping on the case. That's kinda strange.

Makes me feel like 'the Dude' listening to League Play.
lol

It does not sound terrible.
Lube it.
If it gets noisier, dis-assemble for inspection.

Sounds like a normal variator doing its job. The whine changes as the belt climbs up on the front variator. It sounds normal to me, even desirable.

Thanks guys, glad it doesn't sound too terrible. I brought it into the shop for the yearly maintenance and asked them to take a look at it.

Chances are it is fine Neal. These things have a personality and a noise of their own. Please let us know what the mechanic says.

@redk...LOL.
I spoke with the shop and they said its normal for that type of clutch system, the noise generates when it goes into gear...which sounds like a bunch of bs to me. Redk, how do i lube it? Im mechanically challenged but not afraid to get it done. is it a simple to do?

Considering the CVT has no gears but there are gears in the final drive (has a chrome dipstick close to the rear wheel on the left side). Is it the flapping noise I hear we are talking about?
